About the Team We are the team responsible for ensuring that parcels move through our terminal network in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible. Our systems provide sorting instructions that guide parcels between terminals and to their final destinations, whether that’s a customer, parcel locker, or delivery partner. We also deliver real-time parcel data and location insights, enabling smooth and transparent operations across our entire sorting network. Our Vision Our objective is ambitious, We strive to achieve operational excellence across our 40+ terminals in Europe. Any parcel should be able to enter the terminal sorting network at any point and immediately be ready for the next step towards its destination. To achieve this, we ensure that everyone interacting with a parcel — from systems to people — can make smart, fast, and data-driven decisions that minimize the total cost of the flow. How We Work We are a team that listens to what’s needed now, tomorrow, and in the future. Collaboration, experimentation, and continuous improvement are at the heart of how we operate. The team consists of our Engineering Manager, three skilled Backend Engineers, a Product Manager, and a Staff Engineer. This recruitment is to replace one of our Backend Engineers who recently resigned. About the Role As a Senior Backend Engineer in the Sorting team, you’ll play a key role in shaping how parcels move through our network. You’ll take ownership of projects, features, and the team's scope, from design to delivery, and collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to solve complex problems that directly impact our operations. You’ll also act as a mentor and technical coach for other engineers, helping to raise the overall technical bar of the team. When things break (as they sometimes do), you’ll be trusted to lead the way in resolving critical issues calmly and effectively. What you'll do Take ownership of designing, implementing, and delivering backend features and projects within your domain. Break down complex engineering challenges and guide others through solving them. Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code that your peers regard as high quality. Lead by example in ensuring system stability, performance, and scalability. Contribute to and improve our technical roadmap — identifying gaps and proposing meaningful improvements. Mentor and onboard other engineers, fostering a high-performing and collaborative team culture. Participate in incident management and ensure learnings turn into long-term improvements. Collaborate across teams and domains to ensure smooth integrations and a unified technical approach. About You You’re an experienced backend engineer with solid experience in Go (or a similar strongly typed language). We mainly work with Go, but you'll touch legacy systems built in JavaScript, Python, Java, or Kotlin. If you’ve seen a bit of everything and enjoy bringing old systems up to modern standards, that’s a bonus! You have a deep understanding of building distributed systems and APIs in a cloud environment (preferably GCP or AWS). You balance long-term stability with short-term delivery needs, and you care about quality. You’re proactive, when you see a problem, you raise it and help solve it. You enjoy mentoring others, giving and receiving feedback, and contributing to a strong engineering culture. You’re comfortable with ambiguity and confident making decisions that move things forward. You understand how technology and operations connect, and you want your work to have a real impact. Having successfully deployed this system across UEFA competitions, we are now expanding our remote operations to include the Premier League and Championship. This role is designed for those looking to commit to significant hours, particularly during peak periods of the football calendar. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE? For a typical 3pm kick off you can expect our call time to be 5 to 6 hours prior to the start of the match. Throughout the day you will be faced with several hard deadlines in which you will have to meet in order for the service to run effectively and efficiently. Initially, you will spend the first part of your day testing communications, calibrating, and optimising the technology. This ensures GLT is fully operational two hours prior to kick-off, allowing match officials to test its integrity. Warm up is our final opportunity to ensure the system is fully functional before we enter the live match. During the live match you will be monitoring the data, fine tuning the calibration and constantly preparing to produce a virtual replay for broadcasters should a goal line incident occur and activate our GLT system. The journey will begin with training and testing during global sporting events from July and into August. It is crucial that you are able to provide a good level of availability to regularly contribute and participate in these exposure and training opportunities over the initial training period. The ultimate goal is that by the opening weekend of the Premier League in August we will have a pool of operators who are ready to deliver GLT across multiple competitions. This role will have an initial focus on UEFA Football events while you train and gain experience in operating our system, with successful candidates then being given further exposure during our EPL and EFL operations. A typical shift would start 6 hours before the designated kick-off time to set up and test technology. The end of the shift is dependent on service, but typically would be 1 or 2 hours after the match has finished. WHAT DIFFICULTIES MIGHT I FACE? Up to this point, while there may be many things that you find intriguing about this role, the difficulties you may face should not be ignored. * Working Hours: Due to the nature of the sports industry, there is often work on weekends and midweek evenings, and we are expected to fulfil our roles until the final whistle and takedown is complete. * High-Pressure Situations: Working in a live broadcast environment on a production that is distributed to millions worldwide will bring high levels of pressure. Principal Java Engineer - Backend Platform Salary: £76,340 - £100,340 Per Annum Contract: Full-Time, Permanent Location: Hybrid - minimum 2 days per week in office, Basingstoke/London/Bristol ABOUT THE ROLE The Principal Software Engineer (Full-Stack, Backend-leaning) is a senior engineer responsible for the backend architecture, data pipelines, and API layer of a new sports technology product, while remaining capable of contributing to frontend development as needed. This role sits within a small, fast-moving product engineering team and requires someone comfortable owning end-to-end technical delivery across the stack, with backend and data work as the primary focus. WHAT YOU’LL BUILD You will be a core contributor to a new backend platform being built from scratch. The work spans the full data journey - from ingestion at the edge through to storage, transformation, and delivery to end users. Key areas of focus include: * Low-latency data pipelines that ingest and process live sports tracking data, with strict latency requirements for time-critical outputs delivered to coaches and analysts in near real-time. * Event-driven processing using Kafka for streaming data and control messages between on-site devices and cloud services, handling both fast-path live outputs and asynchronous post-processing workflows via SQS and AWS Batch. * Cloud infrastructure on AWS, including Greengrass for edge-to-cloud orchestration, S3 for video and data storage, and Lambda for lightweight processing tasks. * Data transformation and aggregation layers that normalise tracking outputs, store them in a data lake, and make them available to downstream consumers via clean API contracts. * REST and WebSocket APIs that serve both a live data product for immediate consumption and an insights portal for historical analysis and performance comparison. * Observability and reliability - instrumentation, logging, and tracing are built in from the start, not bolted on. The platform needs to run 24/7 without on-site support. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Design and build backend services and APIs (REST/WebSocket) supporting data ingestion, transformation, and delivery to frontend and downstream consumers, with particular attention to latency and throughput given real-time processing requirements. * Own data storage and pipeline architecture, including integration with streaming/event infrastructure. * Implement authentication and authorisation in line with the team's chosen cloud identity and access management approach. * Provide technical direction and review for frontend development (React/TypeScript), working closely with frontend engineers to align on approach, component contracts, and data shapes - this is a collaboration and oversight function rather than day-to-day frontend delivery. * Collaborate closely with computer vision/data science engineers to define and consume data contracts. * Participate in technical decision-making for a product in active development, including architecture choices with long-term implications for scale, latency, and maintainability. * Contribute to technical leadership of the wider engineering team, given the seniority of this role. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE * Strong backend engineering background with production experience in Java (required). * Demonstrated experience building low-latency, high-throughput systems - this is a core requirement, not a nice-to-have. * Working knowledge of a modern frontend framework such as React/TypeScript, sufficient to review and direct frontend work rather than deliver it independently. * Experience with cloud infrastructure and event-driven architectures (e.g. Kafka or equivalent streaming technology). * Experience designing and evolving API contracts (OpenAPI or similar) in a fast-moving, still-evolving product environment. * Familiarity with modern cloud identity and access management approaches (e.g. AWS Cognito or equivalent) is a plus. * Strong communication skills - able to work directly with product and cross-functional stakeholders, and to mentor or direct engineers outside their own core discipline. * Comfortable with ambiguity: this is a build-phase product with evolving scope and infrastructure decisions still being finalised. BENEFITS AND PERKS * 25 days annual leave (excluding bank holidays) * Enhanced pension scheme with 5% matching * Hybrid working model * Complimentary Unmind wellbeing app * Onsite gym (Basingstoke) * Access to sporting events and tickets * Sony Group Company discounts EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER Hawk-Eye is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace. We ensure all employees are treated fairly, regardless of gender, marital status, race, nationality, religion, age, disability, or union membership. We value diversity and strive to create an environment where everyone can reach their full potential. APPLY TODAY If you are passionate about building high-performance backend systems and want to work on real-time data products at scale, we would love to hear from you.
