As a Vacuum Materials Scientist, you will directly develop the technology used to improve vacuum performance that underpins our quantum sensor technology. You will research, test, and define materials, coatings, and getter strategies, and design and interpret experiments to ensure our systems reliably achieve and maintain ultra-high vacuum over extended timescales. The understanding and development of stable alkali vapour systems, including achieving long-term control of vapour pressure and compatibility within sealed environments, will be key. As a Vacuum Process Engineer, you will be responsible for translating vacuum concepts into robust, repeatable, and scalable fabrication processes for miniaturised vacuum systems and miniaturised vapour cells. You will design and implement bonding, sealing, and assembly techniques, ensuring they are reproducible and suitable for future manufacturing. Context The Diffraction Group at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, in collaboration with the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), has an immediate opening for a two-year postdoctoral position funded through the Spanish Scientific Member agreement. The project focuses on emergent phenomena in transition metal oxides exhibiting unconventional frustrated magnetic and quantum phases. The materials under study include non-collinear magnets, such as complex ferrites with chiral states of remarkable stability, and frustrated negative charge-transfer oxides with hidden symmetries. The aim is to advance the design, understanding, and control of emergent states in quantum materials with non-collinear magnetism and symmetry-protected properties of interest for magnetoelectric and spin-lattice-driven applications. The research relies primarily on neutron techniques, with emphasis on single-crystal neutron diffraction and the exploitation of polarized neutrons and polarization analysis. Complementary techniques based on resonant X-ray scattering (RMXS/RIXS) are also of interest. Based at ILL, the position offers the opportunity to interact with a diverse community of scientists across European neutron, synchrotron, and FEL sources, and to carry out research stays of varying duration in the two partner laboratories in Barcelona (ICMAB) and Madrid (UCM). The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. It will provide researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. We are now looking for an Instrument Scientist for the HEIMDAL powder diffractometer. The position is with the Diffraction & Imaging Division. About the division The Diffraction & Imaging Division consists of the scientific staff that are leading the instrument construction projects and the staff that will eventually execute the day-to-day operations of six neutron instruments. The upcoming responsibilities of the division are Finalize the installation and commissioning of all instruments in the division Deliver state-of-the-art scientific capabilities for internal and external users to enable the wider science community to advance science and technology Deliver scientific results from the neutron instruments in collaboration with the user community and other divisions in the science directorate Plan and implement further developments and upgrades of the instruments Push the state-of-the-art capabilities of neutron instrumentation to make maximum benefit from the ESS source. Main Responsibilities HEIMDAL is a multiscale diffractometer that, in its full scope, will enable studies of functional materials across a wide range of length scales, from conventional powder diffraction to the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) regime (possible future upgrade). The construction of the diffractometer part of the instrument is ongoing and expected to be completed in 2027. The immediate mission is to finalize the installation of the instrument and take part in the commissioning of the instrument without and with neutrons. The instrument scientist will work closely with the core instrument team at ESS, comprising another instrument scientist, an instrument computational scientist, and an instrument operational engineer, and in strong interaction with partner institutions and ESS technical services. The successful candidate must be active in a scientific field of direct relevance to HEIMDAL. The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. It will provide researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. We are now looking for an Instrument Scientist for the DREAM powder diffractometer. The position is with the Diffraction & Imaging Division.   About the division  The Diffraction & Imaging Division consists of the scientific staff that are leading the instrument construction projects and the staff that will eventually execute the day-to-day operations of six neutron instruments. The upcoming responsibilities of the division are  Finalize the installation and commissioning of all instruments in the division Deliver state-of-the-art scientific capabilities for internal and external users to enable the wider science community to advance science and technology  Deliver scientific results from the neutron instruments in collaboration with the user community and other divisions in the science directorate  Plan and implement further developments and upgrades of the instruments Push the state-of-the-art capabilities of neutron instrumentation to make maximum benefit from the ESS source.     Main Responsibilities   The DREAM instrument is a neutron powder diffractometer that offers great flexibility for crystal and magnetic structure studies of ordered and disordered materials. The construction of the instrument is completed. The immediate mission is to commission the instrument with neutrons. Commissioning with neutrons is expected to begin in 2027 and continue through 2028, after which the instrument will transition into operation within the ESS user programme. The instrument scientist will work closely with the core instrument team at ESS, comprising another instrument scientist, an instrument computational scientist, and an instrument operational engineer, and in strong interaction with partner institutions and ESS technical services. You will oversee software licensing, optimize procurement processes, and ensure we partner with the right external stakeholders. Operational & Workplace Responsibilities * Office & AV technology: Driving the continuous improvement and development of our office technology and meeting rooms, while overseeing daily operations and support * IT-Equipment Management: Managing IT equipment lifecycle operations (procurement, inventory logistics, and on/offboarding setups) for a device fleet consisting primarily of MacBooks, alongside an increasing number of Windows devices. * Daily IT-support: Handling a broad variety of daily support requests from our end-users, both on-site and remote. Ranging from complex technical troubleshooting to routine, autopilot tasks REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS * Technical Experience: At least 3–5 years of experience working within IT operations, modern workplace management, or system administration. * MDM & M365 Expertise: Proven experience configuring and administering Microsoft Intune (device configuration, compliance policies, deployment) and managing Microsoft 365 environments. Experience with multi-tenant setups is a major plus. * Hands-on IT Support: Solid experience handling day-to-day workplace IT, end-user support, and hardware lifecycle management. * Advanced Workstation & OS Expertise: Deep technical knowledge of both Windows and macOS ecosystems, naturally becoming the go-to person in the team for anything related to computer management and troubleshooting. * Bonus Platform Knowledge: Experience with Okta, Google Workspace and Jamf is a strong advantage. * Language: Professional fluency in English, both written and spoken.
