In our department we strive for everyone to develop in the subject and as a person.   Subject description   Structural Engineering includes loads, design, sustainability, load carrying capacity, repair and strengthening, of buildings and civil engineering structures made of concrete, steel, wood and other materials, separately or in combination, at normal conditions, in cold climate and in fire.   Project description   The project, Semi-Probabilistic Assessment of Infrastructure under Climate Impacts, develops and applies semi-probabilistic and probabilistic methods to assess the current and future load-bearing capacity of existing infrastructure, taking into account climate change and non-stationary environmental conditions. The objective is to link reliability-based research to practically applicable decision-support tools for infrastructure managers and public authorities.   The work is closely linked to research in bridge monitoring, condition assessment, and data-driven infrastructure management. About the role The position has a central role in education at both bachelor’s and master’s level. Skellefteå municipality is the needs owner and participates through the departments of Water & Wastewater and the Streets, providing a real test bed. Recent research will be the starting point where an existing model will be developed further to optimise the strategic asset management and coordination based on economic, environmental and other societal criteria. You will belong to a research team with researchers from our university as well as external researchers from the research institute RISE which are experts in policy-lab methodology.   The work within the project includes development of an existing Python model and collection of asset management data of municipal infrastructure. Together with other researchers in the team, you will design workshops to be carried out with municipal partners to understand the present routines of coordinating asset management of multiutility infrastructures and be able to develop tools to support their work.   Duties   As a PhD student, you will collect asset management data, develop a Python model and be involved in workshops. You will learn how to collect and analyse scientific data within your research area as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies, including both research and mandatory and elective course work. In addition, you will also carry out departmental duties, such as teaching and/or assisting in other research projects. You will have two supervisors who support you in your work, as well as cooperate with other researchers in the project team. Urban drainage infrastructures such as gully pots and stormwater ponds are critical to mitigate these challenges. Over time, the accumulation of sediments and associated contaminants in these infrastructures lead to an impaired performance and thus requiring routine and environmentally safe maintenance operations. As the use of urban drainage infrastructures expands, the mass of sediments and associated contaminants retained in such infrastructure will continue to grow, amplifying both management challenges and potential environmental risks. Fully characterising these challenges within a wider technical and socio-economic context is essential to ensure that the accumulation of sediments prevents–rather than simply defers– their discharge to coastal environments. Addressing this need is the central aim of this project, responding directly to the needs of municipalities, authorities and practitioners for evidence-based tools, clear governance and legal guidance, environmentally responsible maintenance methods and sustainable financial models, and contributes to reducing land-based pressures on coastal and marine environments through system-level transformation.   The work within the project includes the evaluation and development of technical solutions for operation and maintenance of urban drainage infrastructures as well as detailed characterisation of the waste streams generated from maintenance operations.
