Environmentally safe maintenance operations of urban drainage infrastructures

The Urban Water Engineering research group seeks a driven and committed postdoc with a focus on how sustainable management of stormwater sediments can contribute to improved water quality. Subject description

Urban Water Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (storm drains, drinking water supply and wastewater) with respect to collection, transport and treatment, as well as organisation and planning. The research aims to encourage a strong economy, clean environment and the wise use of resources, while preserving the public’s health and safety.

Project description

Stormwater carries a variety of pollutants from urban environments, posing major challenges for the protection of surface waters. Urban drainage infrastructures such as gully pots and stormwater ponds are critical to mitigate these challenges. Over time, the accumulation of sediments and associated contaminants in these infrastructures lead to an impaired performance and thus requiring routine and environmentally safe maintenance operations. As the use of urban drainage infrastructures expands, the mass of sediments and associated contaminants retained in such infrastructure will continue to grow, amplifying both management challenges and potential environmental risks. Fully characterising these challenges within a wider technical and socio-economic context is essential to ensure that the accumulation of sediments prevents–rather than simply defers– their discharge to coastal environments. Addressing this need is the central aim of this project, responding directly to the needs of municipalities, authorities and practitioners for evidence-based tools, clear governance and legal guidance, environmentally responsible maintenance methods and sustainable financial models, and contributes to reducing land-based pressures on coastal and marine environments through system-level transformation.

The work within the project includes the evaluation and development of technical solutions for operation and maintenance of urban drainage infrastructures as well as detailed characterisation of the waste streams generated from maintenance operations.

Within this project, the postdoc will be involved in collaboration with stakeholders in the water and wastewater industry and will communicate results both with the industry and international researchers through well-established competence network.

Duties

As a Postdoc you independently plan and carry out your research work. Further tasks include the writing of scientific papers and the participation in Swedish and international conferences. You may also have the opportunity to teach in undergraduate courses and administrative tasks may be included (up to 20% of fulltime). You will have two supervisors who will support you. The research work for this project will specifically include experimental work.

Qualifications

In order to be eligible for employment as postdoc you must have a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD in the field of water and environment, natural resources engineering, civil engineering or environmental chemistry. A doctoral degree awarded no more than three years before the application deadline provides a useful qualification. Candidates who have been awarded a doctoral degree at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special grounds, for example, different types of statutory leave of absence.

The applicant should have the ability to work independently and take own initiative as well as being able to independently address new research areas. Good oral and written skills in English are essential to facilitate presentation of research outcomes in international conferences and scientific papers. It is advantageous if you have knowledge and experience of:

stormwater management, urban pollution sources and environmental behaviour of pollutants
experience of sampling, analytical chemistry, laboratory work and statistics as well as working with large environmental measurement data sets

Swedish/Scandinavian language skills are beneficial, as they will facilitate communication with stakeholders and participation in teaching activities. Having a driver’s license is meritorious, as it will facilitate research work.

Project description Stormwater transports a wide range of pollutants from urban environments to receiving waters, posing major challenges for the protection of surface waters and coastal ecosystems. Urban drainage infrastructures, such as gully pots and stormwater ponds, play a critical role by retaining sediments and associated contaminants. However, their performance depends on effective operation and maintenance (O&M), which in practice is often reactive or based on fixed schedules, despite large spatial and temporal variability in sediment accumulation. This PhD project is part of a larger interdisciplinary research initiative aiming to enable a transition towards more data-driven and environmentally responsible maintenance of urban drainage infrastructures. The research work will focus on developing a data-driven understanding of sediment accumulation processes in urban drainage infrastructures. This includes long-term monitoring using high-resolution sensors to capture sediment dynamics across rainfall events and seasons. Based on these data, predictive models will be developed to estimate sediment accumulation and infra-structure’s remaining functionality. The results will support more effective maintenance strategies by identifying when and where maintenances are needed to maximise environmental performance and operational efficiency. Projektbeskrivning Dagvatten transporterar ett brett spektrum av föroreningar från urbana miljöer till recipienter, vilket innebär stora utmaningar för skyddet av ytvatten och kustekosystem. Urbana dagvattenanläggningar, såsom dagvattenbrunnar och -dammar, spelar en viktig roll genom att kvarhålla sediment och associerade föroreningar. Deras funktion är dock beroende av effektiv drift och underhåll, vilket i praktiken ofta är reaktivt eller baserat på fasta intervall, trots stora rumsliga och tidsmässiga variationer i sedimentackumulering. Detta projekt är en del av en större tvärvetenskaplig forskningssatsning som syftar till att möjliggöra en omställning mot ett mer datadrivet och miljömässigt hållbart underhåll av urbana dagvattenanläggningar. Det övergripande målet är att minska föroreningsbelastningen till kust- och havsmiljöer samt stödja en hållbar urban vattenhantering. Forskningsprojektet kommer att fokusera på att utveckla en datadriven förståelse för sedimentackumuleringsprocesser i urbana dagvattenanläggningar. Detta inkluderar långtidsövervakning med hjälp av högupplösta sensorer för att fånga sedimentdynamik under regnhändelser och mellan olika årstider. Baserat på dessa data kommer prediktiva modeller att utvecklas för att uppskatta sedimentackumulering och anläggningarnas återstående funktionalitet. Resultaten ska stödja mer effektiva underhållsstrategier genom att identifiera när och var underhållsinsatser behövs för att maximera miljöprestanda och driftseffektivitet. Arbetsuppgifter En doktorandtjänst innebär både teoretiskt och praktiskt arbete. The Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering (CENE) offers unique, collective research expertise in civil and structural engineering. The research subject Structural Engineering (https://www.ltu.se/en/research/research-subjects/structural-engineering) is now seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher contributing towards science and technology in condition assessment. In our department we strive for everyone to develop in the subject and as a person. Subject description Structural Engineering includes loads, design, sustainability, load carrying capacity, repair and strengthening, of buildings and civil engineering structures made of concrete, steel, wood and other materials, separately or in combination, at normal conditions, in cold climate and in fire. Project description The project, Semi-Probabilistic Assessment of Infrastructure under Climate Impacts, develops and applies semi-probabilistic and probabilistic methods to assess the current and future load-bearing capacity of existing infrastructure, taking into account climate change and non-stationary environmental conditions. The objective is to link reliability-based research to practically applicable decision-support tools for infrastructure managers and public authorities. The work is closely linked to research in bridge monitoring, condition assessment, and data-driven infrastructure management. Data from case studies (inspections, monitoring, and experimental tests) are used for model updating, calibration of safety formats, and prediction of future performance and remaining service life. Duties You will conduct research with strong methodological and applied components, leading to publications in peer-reviewed international journals and presentations at major conferences. Your work will include: Develop semi-probabilistic and probabilistic frameworks for the assessment of existing infrastructure under climate impact Integrate time-dependent deterioration models with climate projections Update models using monitoring and inspection data Calibrate and compare safety formats Translate analytical results into decision-support tools Contribute to supervision, teaching, and research proposals Qualifications To be eligible for this postdoctoral position, you must hold a PhD in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field, with specialization in structural reliability, probabilistic methods, infrastructure assessment, or durability. The doctoral degree must be completed at the time of appointment.
