Your opportunity
As a Rock Mechanics Engineer within Boliden, you will have a role in ensuring safe and efficient mining operations across our sites. You will work proactively to identify geotechnical risks, recommend effective rock support measures, and contribute to the development of sustainable and productive mining operations.
This position is based at our Boliden office and primarily supports Boliden area, with potential expansion to other mines. Regular, weekly travel to mining sites will be part of your work.
Who you will work with
You will join a dedicated and highly skilled Rock Mechanics team within Boliden’s Mine Staff organization. The team consists of experienced rock mechanics specialists and geotechnical engineers working across multiple locations and mining operations.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with mine planning engineers, geologists, production technology specialists, technical services, and external consultants.
What you will do
Conduct geotechnical assessments and underground ground stability analyses
Provide operational geotechnical support to technical service departments and mining operations
Monitor, evaluate, and interpret ground conditions in underground mining environments
Develop and recommend appropriate rock support and ground control solutions
Collect underground geotechnical data and maintain geotechnical databases
Perform geotechnical core logging and contribute to geotechnical data models
Support numerical stress modelling and geotechnical analysis for mine design and planning
Contribute to short-term mine design, budget planning, and LOMP risk assessments
Ensure ground support solutions align with established standards and ground control management plans
Participate in research and development initiatives focused on rock mechanics and mining innovation
Provide technical guidance and support effective collaboration across the organization
What you bring

With excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, you can evaluate complex geotechnical challenges and communicate recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
We are looking for someone who has
BSc degree or higher in Mining Engineering, Rock Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering with a mining specialization, or equivalent
Experience working in hard rock underground mining environments
Knowledge of rock mechanics, geotechnical engineering, ground control, and mine stability principles
Experience conducting geotechnical investigations and data interpretation
Proficiency in English
Valid B-class driver’s license
Swedish language skills, or the willingness and ability to learn Swedish quickly
It’s an advantage if you have experience in project work, facilitating collaboration and working in dynamic environments with changing priorities.

About the role Reporting to the Superintendent Rock Mechanics, this role is to ensure that the rock mechanics and ground control tasks required for safe operation at Eleonore mine is performed using industry established standards and norms. The Eleonore mine ore body is very complex and requires innovative and robust initiatives as well as understanding seismicity, ground control and rock fall risk management strategies. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: * Regular underground inspections of mine working areas to inform geotechnical hazard models * Reporting and documentation of underground inspections * Collection of geotechnical data as per Eleonore’s procedures. This includes planning geotechnical drilling, geotechnical core logging, scanline mapping, laboratory testing requirements and geotechnical database management. * The incumbent will liaison and co-ordinate with the Geology department for smooth operation of geotechnical data collection program. * Comprehensive geomechanical study of mine design and sequencing using numerical modeling of mining induced stresses * Identification and communication of geotechnical hazards, including barricading of areas underground * QA/QC checks of all installed ground support systems, including job observations of ground support installers * Analysis of QA/QC data and recommendations for improvements to ground support installation * Training of underground workforce in geotechnical issues * Collection and analysis of geotechnical monitoring data * Installation and maintenance of monitoring equipment * Design and planning of rehabilitation * Daily seismic report for communication of seismic risks to underground workforce * Seismic re-entry inspections * Investigations of rockfalls * Design and planning of cablebolts for stoping and wide spans REQUIREMENTS * BSc in geological or mining engineering, preferably with a specialization in geotechnical engineering or rock mechanics * Member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec * French and English speaking. Todays mining equipment has become more advanced with computerized control systems that have the ability to monitor and measure the machine performance. External equipment, such as 3D-scanning, video recordings, bucket weight measurement systems etc. monitoring production are today commonly used. In modern mines, equipment is also often automated and monitored and controlled from central control rooms. The visualization and presentation of data-based information to management and operators for decision making in a production environment, is also a very important part of the utilization of this large amount of data. This vast logged data can provide detailed knowledge of the properties of the rock mass and extracted material and can thus provide engineers and decision makers with important information for safety and productivity optimization. For this position, mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills are essential in order to understand and benefit from this new data intensive mining environment. Duties As a postdoc you will contribute to research, publication and pedagogical activities, and will explore the wide industrial and research contacts of MRE towards future collaborative research projects, both national and international. Qualifications In order to be eligible for a postdoctoral position you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD. Your previous education should contain mining engineering or similar topic that is appropriate for the project description above. Candidates who have been awarded a doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline will be given precedence. Candidates who have been awarded a doctoral degree at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special grounds, for example, different types of statutory leave of absence. In addition to a PhD in in relevant subject, the following selection criteria will be used: - Documented knowledge in Mining Engineering and production optimization - Documented mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills. - Good knowledge of statistics, AI/ML, and mathematical modeling and programming. - Good knowledge in academic writing and reviewing scientific publications. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. - Practical mining-related experience is a plus. - Interest in and ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multilingual environment. - Good skills in English speaking and writing.
