For a typical 3pm kick off you can expect our call time to be 5 to 6 hours prior to the start of the match. Throughout the day you will be faced with several hard deadlines in which you will have to meet in order for the service to run effectively and efficiently. Initially, you will spend the first part of your day testing communications, calibrating, and optimising the technology. This ensures GLT is fully operational two hours prior to kick-off, allowing match officials to test its integrity. Warm up is our final opportunity to ensure the system is fully functional before we enter the live match. During the live match you will be monitoring the data, fine tuning the calibration and constantly preparing to produce a virtual replay for broadcasters should a goal line incident occur and activate our GLT system. To summarise, these would be the key components of the role: * Operation of the GLT system from the ROC during matches; * Match Day calibration of the GLT system * Monitoring of GLT live data * Delivering graphics and virtual replays for GLT and which will be shared with the TV audience worldwide * Collaborating with supervisors and on-site staff to ensure the system is operated to the highest standard * Investigating/troubleshooting software issues as technical support for the on-site team ESSENTIAL SKILLS, ATTRIBUTES, AND REQUIREMENTS: * A technical grounding * Strong problem-solving skills * A willingness to learn * Excellent communication skills, punctuality and ability to follow instructions and work towards a shared goal * Ability to work flexibly, including weekday evenings and weekends for matches in line with match schedules * Live within a commutable distance of the Remote Operating Centre, Basingstoke (RG22) Desirable Attributes: * Experience, background or qualification in a technical-related course such as computing, computer science, engineering, mathematics, science or technology. * Understanding of PC networks and data collection * Camera optimisation At Hawk-Eye Innovations, we appreciate and value the importance of potential and growth. AVAILABILITY AND TRAINING: Please Note: While this is a casual contract, matches take place strictly according to the football calendar. The journey will begin with training and testing during global sporting events from July and into August. It is crucial that you are able to provide a good level of availability to regularly contribute and participate in these exposure and training opportunities over the initial training period. The ultimate goal is that by the opening weekend of the Premier League in August we will have a pool of operators who are ready to deliver GLT across multiple competitions. This role will have an initial focus on UEFA Football events while you train and gain experience in operating our system, with successful candidates then being given further exposure during our EPL and EFL operations. A typical shift would start 6 hours before the designated kick-off time to set up and test technology. The end of the shift is dependent on service, but typically would be 1 or 2 hours after the match has finished. WHAT DIFFICULTIES MIGHT I FACE? Up to this point, while there may be many things that you find intriguing about this role, the difficulties you may face should not be ignored. * Working Hours: Due to the nature of the sports industry, there is often work on weekends and midweek evenings, and we are expected to fulfil our roles until the final whistle and takedown is complete. * High-Pressure Situations: Working in a live broadcast environment on a production that is distributed to millions worldwide will bring high levels of pressure. Principal Java Engineer - Backend Platform Salary: £76,340 - £100,340 Per Annum Contract: Full-Time, Permanent Location: Hybrid - minimum 2 days per week in office, Basingstoke/London/Bristol ABOUT THE ROLE The Principal Software Engineer (Full-Stack, Backend-leaning) is a senior engineer responsible for the backend architecture, data pipelines, and API layer of a new sports technology product, while remaining capable of contributing to frontend development as needed. This role sits within a small, fast-moving product engineering team and requires someone comfortable owning end-to-end technical delivery across the stack, with backend and data work as the primary focus. WHAT YOU’LL BUILD You will be a core contributor to a new backend platform being built from scratch. The work spans the full data journey - from ingestion at the edge through to storage, transformation, and delivery to end users. Key areas of focus include: * Low-latency data pipelines that ingest and process live sports tracking data, with strict latency requirements for time-critical outputs delivered to coaches and analysts in near real-time. * Event-driven processing using Kafka for streaming data and control messages between on-site devices and cloud services, handling both fast-path live outputs and asynchronous post-processing workflows via SQS and AWS Batch. * Cloud infrastructure on AWS, including Greengrass for edge-to-cloud orchestration, S3 for video and data storage, and Lambda for lightweight processing tasks. * Data transformation and aggregation layers that normalise tracking outputs, store them in a data lake, and make them available to downstream consumers via clean API contracts. * REST and WebSocket APIs that serve both a live data product for immediate consumption and an insights portal for historical analysis and performance comparison. * Observability and reliability - instrumentation, logging, and tracing are built in from the start, not bolted on. The platform needs to run 24/7 without on-site support. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Design and build backend services and APIs (REST/WebSocket) supporting data ingestion, transformation, and delivery to frontend and downstream consumers, with particular attention to latency and throughput given real-time processing requirements. * Own data storage and pipeline architecture, including integration with streaming/event infrastructure. * Implement authentication and authorisation in line with the team's chosen cloud identity and access management approach. * Provide technical direction and review for frontend development (React/TypeScript), working closely with frontend engineers to align on approach, component contracts, and data shapes - this is a collaboration and oversight function rather than day-to-day frontend delivery. * Collaborate closely with computer vision/data science engineers to define and consume data contracts. * Participate in technical decision-making for a product in active development, including architecture choices with long-term implications for scale, latency, and maintainability. * Contribute to technical leadership of the wider engineering team, given the seniority of this role. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE * Strong backend engineering background with production experience in Java (required). * Demonstrated experience building low-latency, high-throughput systems - this is a core requirement, not a nice-to-have. * Working knowledge of a modern frontend framework such as React/TypeScript, sufficient to review and direct frontend work rather than deliver it independently. * Experience with cloud infrastructure and event-driven architectures (e.g. Kafka or equivalent streaming technology). * Experience designing and evolving API contracts (OpenAPI or similar) in a fast-moving, still-evolving product environment. * Familiarity with modern cloud identity and access management approaches (e.g. AWS Cognito or equivalent) is a plus. * Strong communication skills - able to work directly with product and cross-functional stakeholders, and to mentor or direct engineers outside their own core discipline. * Comfortable with ambiguity: this is a build-phase product with evolving scope and infrastructure decisions still being finalised. BENEFITS AND PERKS * 25 days annual leave (excluding bank holidays) * Enhanced pension scheme with 5% matching * Hybrid working model * Complimentary Unmind wellbeing app * Onsite gym (Basingstoke) * Access to sporting events and tickets * Sony Group Company discounts EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER Hawk-Eye is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace.
