Gnothis AB is seeking for a hands-on engineer who enjoys building experimental systems in a laboratory environment. The role combines microfluidics integration, instrument prototyping, and Python-based automation. This is a permanent position based at our HQ, located at the campus of Stockholm University (Stockholm, Sweden). Gnothis, founded in 2015 and supported by highly innovative industrial professionals and technology developers, is on a mission to develop a new frontier for single molecule DNA sequencing; to break the mold on how sequencing is used as a clinical tool for the diagnosis of complex diseases. Gnothis technology integrates a wide range of cutting-edge sciences ranging from nanotechnology, photophysics, optics, surface chemistry, biochemistry and computational science. Since we have taken significant steps forward and now need to solve the remaining crucial challenges before commercialization; for the right person this is a unique opportunity to become a valuable member, to use your “think-outside-the box” mentality with aim to develop a new world-class technology platform! Our instrumentation, software and analysis team currently consists of four engineers and we are now expanding the team as we scale development of the system. The work is primarily on-site and very practical, involving both hardware integration and control software development. The position is part of a multidisciplinary team developing a prototype DNA sequencing instrument combining microscopy, microfluidics, nanofabrication and advanced data analysis. Initial Project The first major task will be to design and integrate a microfluidics subsystem into our existing microscope prototype – to plan, test, order and add already commercially available components to a final prototype. This includes selecting and integrating a commercial microfluidics system (e.g. Elveflow or similar), designing a custom sample chip holder and fluid interface, integrating control into an existing Python control software, and establishing practical operation and cleaning procedures. The work is supported by a biochemistry team, but we are seeking for the right candidate who can make confident engineering decisions based on previous hands-on experiences connected to eg. microfluidics and laboratory automation. Responsibilities Mechanically integrate new devices into a prototype life-science instrument. The initial focus is on liquid sample handling, such as flow and temperature control. Develop Python control and automation software, starting from existing vendor SDKs. Design simple mechanical parts (CAD / 3D printing) Hands-on prototyping and debugging in the lab Method development for instrument performance evaluation and self-calibration. Over time the role will involve increasing focus on automation and device control software. The European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science.   The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) invites applications for an instrument scientist for the dedicated Test beamline (TBL).   The Diffraction and Imaging Division is home to the instrument scientists and instrument operational engineers responsible for designing, constructing, and operating the DREAM, MAGiC, BEER, HEIMDAL, ODIN, and TBL instruments at ESS. New designs for a wide range of neutron instruments are being implemented to fully leverage the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source.   The primary purpose of TBL is characterizing the target-reflector-moderator system and verifying the performance of the neutron source based on operating parameters such as proton beam energy, stability, pulse length, and beam rastering, as well as the moderator conditions. An important aspect of this work will be comparing the measured and simulated neutronic performance of the moderator, providing a crucial reference for various neutron scattering instruments. Additionally, the TBL will contribute to optimizing instruments and methods to fully exploit the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source. The TBL will function as a local characterization station, supporting technical developments in areas such as neutron optics, polarization, and novel detectors. It is designed to support the user program by performing exploratory imaging experiments, neutron diffraction studies, and single-crystal alignment. Due to the flexibility of the instrument, a variety of detectors and sample environments can be fitted inside the experimental cave, allowing multipurpose measurements on not only thermal neutrons but also epithermal/fast neutrons and gamma rays. This includes but is not limited to a well-established technique such as time-of-flight transmission measurements, neutron tomography, neutron activation analysis, grating interferometry, etc. As the facility evolves, the modular design of the TBL will allow for modifications to meet new objectives, ensuring its continued relevance and utility in advancing neutron science. The construction of TBL is completed and the team prepares the instrument for the first neutrons.   About the role:  As the instrument scientist for TBL you will: Work closely with another scientist and the instrument operations engineer, forming the core instrument team. Participate in commissioning of the TBL beamline with neutrons. Develop a diagnostic plan for ESS Operation via the utilization of TBL Develop and implement new experimental methods using the TBL, including (but not limited to) spectroscopic imaging, diffractive imaging, polarized neutron imaging, grating interferometry, neutron depth profiling, prompt-gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA), and advanced sample environments, etc. Develop synergies with other neutron facilities and build links with universities.   The position is a 3-year fixed term role and the workplace will be situated in Lund, Sweden. Job Scope High level purpose of function. A Vision Automation Engineer in a cell manufacturing company plays a key role in developing, optimizing, reverse-engineering, and maintaining machine vision and optical inspection systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations. They are responsible for programming, troubleshooting, and improving cameras, lighting configurations, and image processing algorithms, supporting both legacy production line re-commissioning and new vision system installations. The role also includes ensuring accurate data transfer, system connectivity, and smooth communication with PLCs, SCADA, and upper-level MES platforms to enable inline defect traceability, dimensional inspection, and digital integration. Close collaboration with production, engineering, and maintenance teams is required to identify and implement solutions that improve quality, throughput, and equipment uptime. Key Responsibilities Overall areas of responsibilities and activities Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to) Participate in HAZOP sessions and ensure compliance with process safety, operational safety, and environmental standards relating to equipment control and programming. Your Responsibilities · Lead, inspire, coach and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team. · Provide strategic and technical leadership within your teams responsible areas. · Own the systems engineering framework, methods, and governance, ensuring alignment with recognized standards and best practices. · Secure effective collaboration and interfaces between systems engineering, product development, and verification activities across these domains. · Support the agile team by promoting collaboration across disciplines, and support our Product Owners with the right resources and continuous improvements in how we work. · Ensure that engineers within your team deliver high-quality solutions in all projects. · Contribute to the company’s strategic goals by increasing efficiency, sustainability, and innovation. · Serve as a role model and create an inclusive work culture focused on equality, diversity, and collaboration. Who We Are Looking For We are searching for an experienced leader who is equally passionate about technology and people. Skills and Experience · At least 5 years of professional experience within systems engineering from military sector, working with framework such as ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, FMV:s Handbok Systemsäkerhet (H SystSäk 2022), MIL-STD-882E and IPS (Integrated Product support) /ILS (Integrated Logistic Support). · Previous experience working as a manager within systems engineering, senior system architect, senior project leader or similar with leadership responsibilities. · Had an overall responsibility for establishing and governing advanced, integrated systems across a system of systems landscape. · Knowledge of agile methods, such as Scrum or Kanban, and a commitment to fostering flexibility and innovation. · A strong ability to create structure and build teams in a dynamic work environment. · Experience in working with sustainable system solutions. · Excellent communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills both internally and externally.
