About us
Chalmers' researchers in Nanoscience and Light deal with basic research on the unique chemical and physical phenomena that prevail at very small dimensions, and promote the development of technologies that utilise these phenomena. The announced PhD positions can be placed at any of Chalmers' departments working in the field of Nanoscience and Light.
About the research project
We are looking for (up to five) highly motivated and skilled graduates interested in a combination of nanoscience, nanotechnology, and light. The selected candidates will be offered a PhD position in one of the laboratories specializing in "Nano + Light" at Chalmers.
These positions are special in the sense that this is not an individual PhD call, but rather a broader selection process aiming at attracting students especially interested in the combination of nanotechnology and light. This, among other things, includes research disciplines like nanophotonics, metasurfaces, quantum and nonlinear optics, super-resolution fluorescence imaging, photoswitches, optomechanics, plasmonics, exciton transport, integrated photonics, etc.

Who we are looking for
To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in natural sciences or engineering.
You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English
Personal competences in accordance with the requirements profile, including specification (e.g., social skills, meaning that you enjoy collaborating with others)
Experience in one of the many subfields of Nanoscience and Light will strengthen your application, but it is not mandatory.

About the research project The continuous miniaturization of silicon-based electronics has driven the technological progress for decades. However, as devices now approach atomic scales, the fundamental laws of physics increasingly hinder further advances. To sustain the pace of innovation, both academia and industry have started exploring alternative materials, devices, and circuit architectures, particularly in the rapidly expanding field of artificial intelligence (AI) accelerator hardware. Atomically thin two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors have emerged as highly promising candidates to either significantly complement or even replace silicon in future electronics. In this project, your doctoral research will focus on developing novel memory transistors based on TMDs that enable functionality beyond the limits of silicon. The project covers nanofabrication, semiconductor device physics, electrical and materials characterization as well as low-level system integration, benefiting from one of the largest cleanrooms in European academia and our uniquely well-equipped electrical characterization laboratory. Current transmitters are limited in terms of their bandwidth, energy efficiency and linearity. In this research project you will work on the intersectional area of antenna design, circuit design and signal processing to investigate novel nonlinear multi-antenna transmitters that overcome these limitations. By utilizing antenna mutual coupling for effective amplitude modulation – a shift from the traditional view that considers it detrimental – you will overcome existing limitations in frequency, efficiency, power, and linearity, thereby fostering sustainable digital transformation. About the research project You will work in a complementary team to investigate a new transmitter topology. Your responsibility will be to design microwave components such as power amplifiers and antenna arrays but also derive the theory how to feed the individual amplifiers for the most energy efficient transmission in a certain direction. The goal is to develop a new scalable transmitter architecture that embraces mutual antenna coupling as a means of load modulation - allowing neighboring elements to efficiently create modulated signals similar to classical Chireix outphasing, but using the antenna aperture as combining element. The position is hosted at the department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience where you will have access to state of the art microwave measurement facilities at the Kollberg lab. The project is supported by collaboration agreements with semiconductor manufacturers that allow fabrication in CMOS, GaAs and GaN processes.
