PhD position in global change biology At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals, and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics, and combinations of these fields to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment. The department is placed at two different localities: in Natrium at Medicinaregatan 7B in Gothenburg and at the Kristineberg marine research station operated by the Marine Infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg. The current employment is based at Natrium, with the possibility to conduct research projects at the marine station. General information about being a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg can be found on the university's doctoral student pages. https://www.gu.se/en/doctoral-studies We offer The University of Gothenburg is a state authority, which means special benefits, more holidays and a great pension. Project description Climate change and the increased frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves pose growing threats to the persistence of animal biodiversity. A central challenge in global change biology is to understand why species and populations differ in their vulnerability, so that research can inform conservation, management, and policy. However, we still cannot reliably predict how climate change will affect animal populations across their full life cycle. Accumulating evidence suggests that early life stages can be more sensitive to extreme heat than adults, yet developmental stages remain critically understudied. Current methods used to quantify climate vulnerability are also often not directly comparable between embryos and later life stages, which has further limited our ability to identify critical windows of sensitivity to climate change. New methodological advances now allow us to standardise how we compare vulnerability across life stages, opening up exciting opportunities to understand how climate change affects all stages of life. The central question of this PhD project is: How and why does thermal sensitivity vary across the life cycle, and what are the consequences for animal populations under climate change? This fully funded PhD project is part of a research program funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) on the vulnerability of fish life stages to climate change. The PhD project is expected to combine empirical research with evidence synthesis and comparative analyses. While some projects will primarily focus on fish, comparative studies can be broader in scope, and there will be opportunities to study other taxa (e.g., freshwater and marine invertebrates). The project plan is flexible in its scope, and the PhD student will be encouraged to develop original questions and take increasing intellectual ownership of their research agenda. The applicant is also expected to take part in collaborations at both local and global scales, and contribute to the Thermal Ecology Alliance. Therefore, the PhD student will have excellent opportunities to develop a large collaborative network and address broad questions in global change biology. Project description: Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) begin years to decades before symptoms emerge. With the approval of the first anti-amyloid therapies, which are most effective when initiated early, there is an urgent need for biomarkers that can detect, stage and monitor disease in this presymptomatic window. Yet the combined value of available neuroimaging biomarkers for early neurodegeneration remains insufficiently established, and emerging modalities capturing processes upstream of atrophy require validation. This PhD project uses multimodal neuroimaging to decipher early neurodegenerative disease across three complementary modalities and world-leading cohorts. Structural MRI measures of hippocampal volume, cortical thickness, white matter hyperintensities and perfusion will be studied in relation to cerebrospinal fluid and plasma biomarkers and cognition in the population-based REAL AD Validation cohort. Longitudinal tau PET with [18F]RO948 in the ALFA+ cohort of cognitively unimpaired individuals will characterise the temporal relationships between amyloid, tau spreading, neurodegeneration and cognitive change across biomarker-defined disease stages. Finally, synaptic density will be quantified with [18F]SynVesT-1 SV2A PET in the SYNAPSE study, evaluating whether synaptic loss – a strong correlate of cognitive decline – can serve as a marker of neurodegeneration preceding structural atrophy, and whether it is sensitive to cognitive training-induced plasticity. Across modalities, diagnostic and prognostic models will be developed to determine the added value of each technique, alone and combined with fluid and cognitive measures, for early detection, disease staging and prediction of progression. The project is embedded in an international supervisory network spanning Gothenburg, Stockholm, Barcelona and Madison, and will deliver validated imaging tools to support earlier diagnosis, improved trial design and treatment monitoring in AD. Project description: Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterised by periods of remission and relapse. Although modern treatment often leads to clinical, endoscopic and histological healing, many patients relapse. Why an apparently healed intestinal mucosa remains biologically vulnerable is a central unanswered question. This PhD project aims to identify the molecular mechanisms that determine whether remission remains stable or the disease relapses. The project is based on the hypothesis that the intestinal microenvironment, shaped by interactions between the microbiota, microbial metabolites and host regulatory signals, is not fully restored during remission, which may increase susceptibility to renewed inflammatory stimuli. The PhD student will be part of BioLabX, Sweden's national research school in Biomedical Laboratory Science. The project is particularly relevant for applicants with a background in Biomedical Laboratory Science. The PhD student will combine patient-oriented research with experimental models to investigate how the intestinal microenvironment influences immune function during remission. The work includes handling and analysis of human patient samples, functional cell models using human macrophages, advanced cell culture, flow cytometry and molecular biology, as well as metabolomics and lipidomics. Bioinformatic and statistical methods will be used to integrate molecular data with clinical follow-up and identify biomarkers that may predict relapse. The research environment is translational and interdisciplinary, with close collaboration between preclinical researchers, clinical gastroenterologists and national research networks. Through BioLabX, the PhD student will have access to a national network, specialised doctoral courses and pedagogical training. The PhD student will also participate in teaching Biomedical Laboratory Science in Swedish.
