What You'll Do You will play a key role in building Blykalla’s experimental capabilities related to backend systems and nuclear waste management. Your responsibilities include: Help establish and develop Blykalla’s in-house chemistry laboratory and experimental capabilities. Design, plan, and perform experiments related to waste treatment, coolant purification, and material handling. Troubleshoot experimental systems, identify suitable analytical methods, and independently drive investigations forward. Contribute to technical reports, feasibility studies, licensing documentation, and strategic decision-making. Investigate opportunities to reduce low-, intermediate-, and high-level waste volumes through purification strategies, system design, and material choices. Analyze and evaluate expected waste streams, both solid and liquid, based on reactor operating conditions and system design. Evaluate treatment, purification, recycling, and waste management methods for Pb coolant, activated materials, and SNF, including contamination control and backend management considerations. Work closely with national laboratories, industrial partners, and regulators to turn research into deployable solutions. Act as an internal technical resource for chemistry-related questions across the waste lifecycle and backend systems. Who You Are You are analytical, hands-on, and motivated by solving difficult technical problems. You enjoy experimental work and are comfortable navigating uncertainty in a fast-moving R&D environment. You are someone who can combine theory with practical execution — designing experiments, troubleshooting equipment and processes, analyzing data, and communicating results clearly. Even when facing unfamiliar systems or analytical methods, you know how to identify the right tools, techniques, and collaborators to move forward. You work well across disciplines, communicate effectively, and enjoy building new capabilities from the ground up. Join our team at Chalmers to explore corrosion mechanisms in zirconium alloys at the atomic scale and contribute to the development of next-generation nuclear materials. About us The research at the Division of Microstructure Physics focuses on experimental investigations of engineering materials using advanced characterization techniques. We mainly use electron microscopy, atom probe tomography (APT) and large scale facilities (synchrotron and neutron scattering). The research primarily deals with the relation between microstructure and properties, and how this relationship is influenced by processing and in-service degradation. Among the materials studied, steel, hard coatings, zirconium alloys and high entropy materials are central. The applications are often related to energy and sustainability. About the research project Nuclear fuel is enclosed in cladding tubes made from zirconium alloys. To improve reactor safety and economic performance, new alloys are continuously being developed. In this project, the corrosion behaviour of a novel zirconium alloy will be investigated to improve our understanding of the underlying corrosion mechanisms and support the development of next-generation materials. Advanced characterization techniques, including electron microscopy and atom probe tomography, will be used to study corrosion processes at the atomic scale. About the role: We are looking to build up our team of Operators to join our Remote Handling (RH) Group. The RH Group plays a key role in operating, maintaining, and developing the equipment used for transferring and processing radioactive components and waste within the ESS Active Cells Facility (our environment for handling radioactive components safely) using specialised Cask Assemblies. You will work with highly specialised remote handling systems, heavy lifting equipment, Virtual Reality-supported operations, and complex electromechanical systems in a unique radioactive waste handling and maintenance environment. ESS will provide extensive specialist training, including opportunities to collaborate with internationally recognised remote handling experts. Kompetenscentrumet samlar akademi och industri för att stärka svensk kärnteknisk kompetens och bidra till en hållbar energiomställning. Det tidigare doktorandprojektet har utvecklat metoder för optimering av jämviktscykler, där målet är att hitta återkommande bränslehanteringsstrategier som ger god bränsleekonomi samtidigt som reaktorfysikaliska säkerhetsmarginaler uppfylls. Särskilt fokus har legat på att kombinera avancerade optimeringsalgoritmer med maskininlärningsbaserade surrogatmodeller, inklusive grafbaserade representationer av härdladdningsmönster. Du kommer att vidareutveckla denna forskningsinriktning. Projektet kan till exempel omfatta cykel-till-cykel-optimering, utveckling av nya maskininlärningsmodeller, förbättrade optimeringsstrategier, osäkerhetskvantifiering, effektivare hantering av fysikaliska begränsningar samt utökad analys av bränsledesign, laddningsmönster och säkerhetsrelaterade storheter. Målet är att ta fram metoder som gör det möjligt att snabbare och mer tillförlitligt utforska stora designrum inom härd- och bränsleoptimering. Arbetsuppgifter Arbetsuppgifterna består huvudsakligen av forskarutbildning, där du bedriver forskning inom projektet och följer kurser inom forskarutbildningen. Arbetet innefattar utveckling, implementering och utvärdering av beräkningsmetoder för härd- och bränsleoptimering med hjälp av maskininlärning och optimeringsalgoritmer. I arbetsuppgifterna ingår att: utveckla och tillämpa maskininlärningsbaserade surrogatmodeller för reaktorfysikaliska beräkningar, utveckla och utvärdera optimeringsmetoder för bränsleladdningsmönster och bränslesammansättning, analysera säkerhetsrelaterade parametrar såsom reaktivitet, effektfördelningar, bränsleutnyttjande och marginaler till tekniska begränsningar, arbeta med stora datamängder från reaktorfysikaliska simuleringar, implementera och dokumentera beräkningsverktyg, exempelvis i Python, sammanställa och publicera forskningsresultat i vetenskapliga artiklar, presentera resultat vid nationella och internationella konferenser, delta i forskargruppens seminarier, projektmöten och övriga vetenskapliga aktiviteter. Undervisning och annan institutionstjänstgöring kan komma att ingå med högst 20 procent av heltid. What we do at Blykalla Blykalla is a Swedish deep-tech company at the forefront of the nuclear industry, pioneering the development of small modular reactors that provide clean, safe, and reliable energy. What you’ll get to do As a Rotating Machine Lead Engineer, you will own the rotating equipment portfolio of the SEALER plant — from the Primary Coolant Pumps (PCPs) submerged in molten lead above 400 °C, where conventional bearing and sealing solutions don't apply, to the secondary-side feedwater and condensate pumps and the full set of auxiliary and safety-related pumps the plant requires. It is a technically demanding portfolio that spans genuinely novel engineering on the primary side and rigorous nuclear-grade discipline throughout: Define functional and design requirements for the full rotating equipment portfolio — PCPs in molten lead, secondary-side feedwater and condensate pumps, and all auxiliary, safety-related, and service pumps. Develop design basis documentation and lead trade-off studies on pump configuration, drive arrangement, sealing strategy, and bearing technology. Set priorities across the portfolio — distinguishing where Blykalla-specific engineering is warranted from where standard industrial solutions suffice. Act as Blykalla's technical counterpart to pump suppliers and engineering partners, challenging design choices and steering solutions to fit plant requirements across hydraulics, sealing, materials, and maintainability. Define the scope of hydraulic, rotordynamic, and structural analyses; brief specialists; and critically review their outputs. Use hand calculations to sanity-check results. Own supplier work packages: evaluate proposals, lead design reviews, and keep pump development aligned with plant requirements and schedule.
