Project description Stormwater transports a wide range of pollutants from urban environments to receiving waters, posing major challenges for the protection of surface waters and coastal ecosystems. Urban drainage infrastructures, such as gully pots and stormwater ponds, play a critical role by retaining sediments and associated contaminants. However, their performance depends on effective operation and maintenance (O&M), which in practice is often reactive or based on fixed schedules, despite large spatial and temporal variability in sediment accumulation. This PhD project is part of a larger interdisciplinary research initiative aiming to enable a transition towards more data-driven and environmentally responsible maintenance of urban drainage infrastructures. The research work will focus on developing a data-driven understanding of sediment accumulation processes in urban drainage infrastructures. This includes long-term monitoring using high-resolution sensors to capture sediment dynamics across rainfall events and seasons. Based on these data, predictive models will be developed to estimate sediment accumulation and infra-structure’s remaining functionality. The results will support more effective maintenance strategies by identifying when and where maintenances are needed to maximise environmental performance and operational efficiency. Within this project, the postdoc will be involved in collaboration with stakeholders in the water and wastewater industry and will communicate results both with the industry and international researchers through well-established competence network. Duties As a Postdoctoral researcher you independently plan and carry out your research work. Further tasks include the writing of scientific papers and the participation in Swedish and international conferences. You may also have the opportunity to teach in undergraduate courses, and administrative tasks may be included (up to 20% of fulltime). You will have two supervisors who will support you. Project description The project Streetwise aims to improve coordination between street works and water/wastewater pipe network renewal in Swedish municipalities. Today, these investments are often planned and financed separately or coordinated based on limited data leading to repeated excavation, higher lifecycle costs, and unnecessary disruption for citizens. Skellefteå municipality is the needs owner and participates through the departments of Water & Wastewater and the Streets, providing a real test bed. Recent research will be the starting point where an existing model will be developed further to optimise the strategic asset management and coordination based on economic, environmental and other societal criteria. You will belong to a research team with researchers from our university as well as external researchers from the research institute RISE which are experts in policy-lab methodology. The work within the project includes development of an existing Python model and collection of asset management data of municipal infrastructure. Together with other researchers in the team, you will design workshops to be carried out with municipal partners to understand the present routines of coordinating asset management of multiutility infrastructures and be able to develop tools to support their work. Duties As a PhD student, you will collect asset management data, develop a Python model and be involved in workshops. You will learn how to collect and analyse scientific data within your research area as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies, including both research and mandatory and elective course work. In addition, you will also carry out departmental duties, such as teaching and/or assisting in other research projects. Örebro University and the School of Science and Technology are looking for a doctoral student (PhD student) for the doctoral programme in Chemistry, concluding with a doctoral degree. Start date: Fall 2026. Project description The doctoral student will be part of the research project COAST PFAS – Coastal PFAS Transition Lab for Source Control, Substitution and Governance, a transdisciplinary initiative addressing the spread of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from urban and industrial sources to coastal environments. The project combines environmental analytical chemistry, wastewater and stormwater research, process understanding, and systems perspectives to support preventive and sustainable PFAS management. The PhD project is connected to the work package PFAS flows from land to sea, which focuses on identifying, mapping, and quantifying PFAS sources and transport pathways in urban water systems and coastal environments. The research will include targeted and non-targeted PFAS analysis in wastewater, stormwater, industrial effluents, and receiving waters. The research will also include the development of sector-specific PFAS fingerprints and mass-balance approaches. The doctoral student will work with advanced analytical methods including LC-MS/MS, combustion ion chromatography, extractable organofluorine (EOF), oxidation methods for PFAS precursors, and high-resolution mass spectrometry for suspect and non-target screening. The work also includes interpretation of large analytical datasets and integration of results into source-tracking and fate-assessment frameworks. The project is conducted in close collaboration between IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Chalmers University of Technology, Örebro University, VA SYD, and Malmö City. The doctoral student will be part of an interdisciplinary and international research environment involving analytical chemistry, environmental engineering, and sustainability research. Technical Project Manager – Mechanical & Piping (BOP) The Technical Project Manager (TPM) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the mechanical and piping discipline within Balance of Plant (BoP) systems, including water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, fire protection systems, compressed air plants, and other supporting facilities. The role may also cover additional construction areas as required by the project. The Technical Project Manager ensures that all discipline-related activities comply with design specifications, applicable technical standards, and overall project requirements, while meeting cost, schedule, quality, and safety objectives. The role works in close collaboration with Plant Unit Project Managers, Construction Managers, and other cross-functional Technical Project Managers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical and piping activities across the project. Key responsibilities include managing contractors and suppliers, monitoring progress and costs, mitigating technical risks, and ensuring that quality and documentation requirements are fulfilled. The Technical Project Manager also supports procurement activities with technical expertise, evaluates change requests, and drives continuous improvement through the application of lessons learned. Key Responsibilities Technical & Project Execution Manage all activities related to the mechanical and piping discipline, ensuring compliance with design specifications, technical standards, and project requirements. Ensure discipline-related work aligns with design-to-cost principles and agreed project schedules. Integrate mechanical and piping scope into the overall plant unit in close coordination with Plant Unit Project Managers and Construction Managers. Provide regular updates on discipline progress and escalate issues when required. Review and approve all discipline deliverables to ensure quality, completeness, and compliance. Contractor & Supplier Management Oversee contractors and suppliers (engineering partners, OEMs, construction partners, and consultants), ensuring work is delivered on time and meets quality standards. Assess resource needs and adjust team activities to meet project objectives and timelines. Risk, Quality & Documentation Identify technical risks and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to mitigate and resolve issues. Ensure all technical work is properly documented and that reporting is accurate and timely. Provide guidance on discipline-specific methodologies, standards, and best practices. Cost, Schedule & Change Management Track discipline progress and report status to the Construction Area Project Manager. Monitor expenses, manage costs, and identify opportunities for cost optimization without compromising quality or safety. Report financial performance and cost control updates to relevant project stakeholders. Review and evaluate change requests, assessing impacts on scope, schedule, and budget. Implement approved changes effectively while maintaining project integrity and alignment. Collaboration & Continuous Improvement Facilitate collaboration with other Technical Project Managers to ensure cross-discipline integration. Identify opportunities for process improvements within the discipline. Capture and apply lessons learned from previous projects to improve future performance. Competencies and Experience Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years of experience in the design, construction, and installation of mechanical and piping systems within industrial projects. Strong technical knowledge of mechanical and piping systems in complex industrial environments. Familiarity with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations. Proven leadership and stakeholder management capabilities. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
