Current transmitters are limited in terms of their bandwidth, energy efficiency and linearity. In this research project you will work on the intersectional area of antenna design, circuit design and signal processing to investigate novel nonlinear multi-antenna transmitters that overcome these limitations. By utilizing antenna mutual coupling for effective amplitude modulation – a shift from the traditional view that considers it detrimental – you will overcome existing limitations in frequency, efficiency, power, and linearity, thereby fostering sustainable digital transformation. About us The position is hosted by https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/mc2/research/microwave-electronics/ at https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/mc2/ where the you will have access to several commercial state-of-the art MMIC foundry processes and world-class measurement infrastructure allowing for a successful completion of this research project. At the Microwave Electronics laboratory currently 5 students pursue their Ph.D. in a similar area, which plenty of opportunity to collaborate and learn from and with peers. About the research project You will work in a complementary team to investigate a new transmitter topology. Your responsibility will be to design microwave components such as power amplifiers and antenna arrays but also derive the theory how to feed the individual amplifiers for the most energy efficient transmission in a certain direction. The goal is to develop a new scalable transmitter architecture that embraces mutual antenna coupling as a means of load modulation - allowing neighboring elements to efficiently create modulated signals similar to classical Chireix outphasing, but using the antenna aperture as combining element. The position is hosted at the department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience where you will haveaccess to state of the art microwave measurement facilities at the Kollberg lab. The project is supported by collaboration agreements with semiconductor manufacturers that allow fabrication in CMOS, GaAs and GaN processes. At the same time, you are a strong team player and enjoy collaborating across disciplines. You have the ability to communicate and disseminate research results effectively to different audiences, including academia, industry, and society. *for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. The following experience will strengthen your application: Experience in the design of integrated and high-frequency circuits as well as antennas is meritorious Specialization in wireless and/or wireless communication systems engineering and/or analog circuit design Advanced courses in microwave circuit design Advanced courses in signal processing Experience with Cadence Virtuoso, MWO, Keysight ADS, SPICE, Matlab. Experience with high frequency RF and measurement equipment Experience in building RF and microwave systems Experience in microwave and millimeter wave integrated circuit design Experience with digital signal processing. What you will do Your major responsibilities as Doctoral student is to pursue your own doctoral studies, including both coursework and research. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally at international conferences and in writing (publishing in highly ranked journals). In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties. The employment is limited to a maximum of five years. Contract terms The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start. The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years. Do you want to use advanced simulation methods to understand and improve the performance of fuel cells? Join Chalmers and contribute to atomistic modelling of catalytic reactions to enhance the stability of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. About us Chemical Physics develops sustainable energy systems by using heterogeneous (electro) catalysis for alternative fuel production, emission control, energy storage, and fuel cells. The research is interdisciplinary with strong connections between fundamental and applied science. Chemical Physics is a dynamic and international environment that strives for scientific excellence through teamwork and combined theoretical and experimental efforts. The theoretical activities at Chemical Physics focus on electronic structure calculations within the density functional theory together with mean-field modeling and Monte-Carlo simulations for reaction kinetics. By linking quantum mechanical calculations with kinetic modeling, it is possible to bridge both length and time scales. About the research project Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) convert the chemical energy in hydrogen to electrical energy. The main parts of a PEMFC are the anode, cathode and electrolyte. The reactions at the anode and cathode electrodes are catalyzed by metal nanoparticles on carbon. A current issue for large scale implementation of the PEMFC technology is long-term stability. The project will use atomistic first principles methods to understand the governing mechanism for fuel cell degradation. Increased understanding of the governing processes will provide information on how catalysts could be improved and how the system should be operated to minimize degradation. The project is a collaboration between Volvo Technology AB and Chemical Physics at Chalmers. Are you interested in advancing materials for safe and reliable nuclear power using cutting-edge characterization techniques? Join our team at Chalmers to explore corrosion mechanisms in zirconium alloys at the atomic scale and contribute to the development of next-generation nuclear materials. About us The research at the Division of Microstructure Physics focuses on experimental investigations of engineering materials using advanced characterization techniques. We mainly use electron microscopy, atom probe tomography (APT) and large scale facilities (synchrotron and neutron scattering). The research primarily deals with the relation between microstructure and properties, and how this relationship is influenced by processing and in-service degradation. Among the materials studied, steel, hard coatings, zirconium alloys and high entropy materials are central. The applications are often related to energy and sustainability. About the research project Nuclear fuel is enclosed in cladding tubes made from zirconium alloys. To improve reactor safety and economic performance, new alloys are continuously being developed. In this project, the corrosion behaviour of a novel zirconium alloy will be investigated to improve our understanding of the underlying corrosion mechanisms and support the development of next-generation materials. Advanced characterization techniques, including electron microscopy and atom probe tomography, will be used to study corrosion processes at the atomic scale. At Chalmers, research in the field of nanoscience and light is carried out in a broad range of activities. About us Chalmers' researchers in Nanoscience and Light deal with basic research on the unique chemical and physical phenomena that prevail at very small dimensions, and promote the development of technologies that utilise these phenomena. The announced PhD positions can be placed at any of Chalmers' departments working in the field of Nanoscience and Light. About the research project We are looking for (up to five) highly motivated and skilled graduates interested in a combination of nanoscience, nanotechnology, and light. The selected candidates will be offered a PhD position in one of the laboratories specializing in "Nano + Light" at Chalmers. These positions are special in the sense that this is not an individual PhD call, but rather a broader selection process aiming at attracting students especially interested in the combination of nanotechnology and light. This, among other things, includes research disciplines like nanophotonics, metasurfaces, quantum and nonlinear optics, super-resolution fluorescence imaging, photoswitches, optomechanics, plasmonics, exciton transport, integrated photonics, etc. A PhD exam in Nano+Light is the perfect start for your career, whether you aim at academic research at the highest level, advancing technology and business ideas in major companies, or spinning off your own idea into a start-up company. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in natural sciences or engineering. You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English Personal competences in accordance with the requirements profile, including specification (e.g., social skills, meaning that you enjoy collaborating with others) *For students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted. The following experience will strengthen your application: Experience in one of the many subfields of Nanoscience and Light will strengthen your application, but it is not mandatory.
