We are the central research and development team driving Faculty's broader AI safety charter. We pioneer fundamental and applied
technical AI safety research, producing rigorous scientific outputs—including publications, tooling, and technical reports—that
advance the theory and practice of AI safety and directly shape the work of frontier AI labs, government agencies, and national
security institutes.
Our research spans both black-box and white-box approaches to understanding and steering AI systems. We care deeply about
interpretability, faithfulness, and principled mitigation strategies, with a particular focus on the mechanistic and behavioural
study of transformer-based large language models and long-running agentic systems.

As a Senior Research Scientist at Faculty, you will join our high-impact R&D team to lead original technical research that

ABOUT THE TEAM We are the central research and development team within Faculty's broader AI safety charter. Our group focuses on fundamental and applied technical AI safety research, producing rigorous scientific outputs - publications, tooling, technical reports & evaluations - that advance the theory, practice and understanding of AI risks, and directly inform the work of frontier AI labs, government agencies, and national security institutes. Our research spans fundamental research using black-box and white-box approaches to understand and steer AI systems, to building and advancing safety evaluations which better understand and quantify risks in AI. We care deeply about mechanistic understanding and scientific rigour in measuring risks in AI systems. Current research threads include (but are not limited to) uncertainty calibration, goal drift, misinformation mitigation, steering vectors, robust safeguard measurement and the science of evaluations. We collaborate closely with the Faculty's wider AI safety team, a group with a well-established track record in capability evaluations and red-teaming for misuse risk across CBRN, cybersecurity, societal and psychosocial harms. That work has been conducted for several leading frontier model developers and national safety institutes, and has been featured in model cards and safety reports from Anthropic, GDM, Meta & OpenAI. ABOUT THE ROLE As a Senior Research Scientist at Faculty, you will lead the development of cutting-edge safety evaluations to quantify AI risks in critical domains like CBRN and Cyber. Joining our high-impact R&D team, you will drive original research that advances safety methodology while collaborating with delivery teams building evaluations and red-teaming for frontier labs. This is a high-agency opportunity to conduct technical AI safety research that produces scientific outputs shaping the future of safe real-world AI deployment. WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING * Leading the development of novel safety evaluations in high-impact domains such as CBRN and Cyber to quantify emerging risks. * Executing original technical research in AI safety evaluation methods, taking ideas from concept to publication. * Shaping the R&D agenda by identifying strategic opportunities to advance safety evaluation methodology across Faculty and the broader ecosystem. * Contributing thought leadership and deep technical expertise to client delivery projects, evaluation work, and red-teaming for frontier labs. * Representing Faculty’s scientific leadership through active external engagement with the global research community, frontier labs, and government stakeholders. WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR * A track record of owning research end-to-end—from identifying novel problems to publication—driven by scientific curiosity and tenacity. * Hands-on experience designing and building AI evaluations or benchmarks, alongside a strong ability to reason about construct validity and mitigate confounds. * Expertise in red-teaming, adversarial testing, jailbreaking, indirect prompt injection, and assessing the robustness of model safeguards. * Strong foundational skills in experimental design, statistical analysis, and uncertainty quantification, including Bayesian methods. * Deep knowledge of language models, generative AI architectures, training methodologies, and safety mitigation techniques. * Solid Python proficiency combined with the engineering discipline required to build robust, reproducible research. NICE TO HAVES * Experience in threat and risk modelling. * Background or knowledge in high-risk domains such as CBRN or Cybersecurity. * A history of high-impact AI research, evidenced by top-tier publications or equivalent practical achievements. From strengthening mission-critical capabilities across national security and intelligence, to working with frontier labs to provide robust AI safety red teaming and evaluation, we work at the frontier of high-stakes, high-impact missions. ABOUT THE ROLE As a Delivery Manager in our National Security and Safety team at Faculty, you will act as a pivotal commercial and delivery lead, driving high-stakes AI transformation for the UK’s most critical government partners. You will be a strategic architect, building deep networks of influence and solving complex challenges by bridging the gap between cutting-edge AI research and operational mission needs. ABOUT THE TEAM We’re hiring AI engineers to help us transform research outcomes in biomedical sciences. We utilise generative AI and agents to help scientists find novel connections and insights from biomedical literature and datasets. Delivering a faster research experience is not just a matter of picking the latest LLM model. Getting accurate, scientifically relevant, trustworthy and meaningful results relies on building trust with our users that comes from integrating proper levels of guardrails, biomedical curation, consistent update cycles and robust deployment practices that make our platform a one-stop shop for a researcher’s needs. We’re looking for AI engineers who will champion this cause and help us apply AI to transform the way biomedical professionals carry out their research and day-to-day exploration. WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING · Design and implement ML/AI solutions end-to-end, from the idea and data exploration phase to deployment and monitoring, balancing cutting-edge techniques with pragmatism to deliver measurable impact. · Apply strong software engineering principles, such as modularity, testing, code reviews, CI/CD and observability, to ensure AI systems are reliable, maintainable, production-ready and can be readily adapted to future developments. · Choose the right approach for the problem at hand, evaluating classical ML and NLP techniques, LLM-based solutions, and agentic solutions to balance trade-offs between speed, cost, complexity, interpretability, and performance. · Collaborate closely with product, design, and other engineering teams to scope work, align on success metrics, and incrementally ship improvements in user-facing features powered by AI. · Document system architectures and decision rationale early and clearly, enabling alignment across teams and accelerating onboarding and iteration. · Champion model and data quality, including dataset versioning, robust evaluation, fairness/bias assessment, and real-world performance tracking. · Mentor junior AI engineers and cross-functional teammates, sharing best practices in modelling, coding, maintaining and integrating product features, and helping grow a high-trust, high-performance team culture. · Stay up-to-date with emerging research and tools, distilling key insights and bringing back relevant innovations to elevate team capabilities and product opportunities. · Contribute to a culture of knowledge sharing, through company-wide Slack channels, Show and Tell presentations and technical deep-dives. WHAT EXPERIENCE YOU’LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL · A master's degree or above in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related field. · 5+ years of experience building AI/ML systems in production environments, including ownership of key lifecycle stages: data collection, modeling, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring. · Proficiency in Python and modern ML and agentic frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or LangChain, with experience packaging models into APIs or integrating them into applications. · A solid understanding of LLMs for natural language processing applications, including topics such as embeddings, prompt engineering and fine-tuning. · Strong software engineering foundations such as version control, unit/integration testing, CI/CD, containerization plus a mindset of building for reliability and scale. · Experience working in product-focused teams, collaborating with designers, engineers, and PMs, to scope and ship AI features iteratively · Ability to reason about system behavior end-to-end, including model performance, latency, and observability, and how these impact user experience. · Clear, structured communicator, comfortable documenting and defending architectural decisions and engaging in thoughtful technical debate.
