As a Thruster Technical Owner, you will own the technical follow-up of the supplier providing assigned Nyx Earth thruster
assemblies, including the technical baseline, supplier development path, qualification evidence, delivery readiness, integration
support, and flight-operations feedback loop.
You will work closely with propulsion system engineering, GNC, avionics, vehicle design, program management, procurement, quality,
PA, supplier quality, AIT/MAIT, test, safety, operations, and the thruster supplier or manufacturing partner. The reporting line
is to be confirmed by Propulsion leadership.

Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run. In addition, we are developing advanced propulsion capabilities to support our reusable spacecraft programs. We are building a dedicated test capability for storable, hypergolic propulsion systems in the 100–800 N class. As a Thruster Test Bench Technical and Team Leader, you will lead the end-to-end development of a propulsion test facility for legacy propellants (e.g., MON-class oxidizers and MMH-type fuels), from requirements definition through commissioning and operating the test facility. You will manage the team that develops, commissions and operates the test facility. This position requires technical excellence and expertise as well as team management skills. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Design of Test Facility * Develop a vacuum hot fire test facility which will be used to develop and qualify orbital thrusters * Capture and define system-level requirements for a chemical propulsion test bench supporting 100–800 N thrusters. * Define performance envelopes, safety objectives, operability constraints, and verification methods. * Translate propulsion test needs into facility, utilities, and ground support equipment requirements * Define instrumentation, data acquisition, and control systems for safe hot-fire testing. * Interface effectively with internal engineering/design teams, customers, and external partners. Assembly & Integration of Test Facility * Define the schedule and conditions of the bench integration. Define the tests to be performed all along the project, to mitigate the risks to find issues during commissionning. * Manage suppliers and internal manufacturing activities; oversee integration and verification. * Plan and execute commissioning, acceptance testing, and entry-into-service activities. Safety & Operation of Test Facility * Lead hazard analyses (FMEA, HAZOP, risk assessments) and implement mitigation measures. * Develop procedures for handling, testing, maintenance, and emergency response. * Validate redlines and abort sequences for different failure cases * Integration of thruster into test bench * Lead operations of test facility and perform hot fire, cold flows, decontamination and maintenance activities. It's possible that at one point, the operations would be handover to another testing team and then insure a smooth and well documented handover if needed. Leadership / Team management * As a Team Leader we expect you to drive and support a small multidisciplinary team to design, procure, assemble, and install and commission the test bench. * You will manage the team tasks and priorities and partially HR/training and developpement topics WHAT WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE FROM YOU * Degree in aerospace, propulsion system, mechanical, chemical engineering, or a related discipline. * 5+ years of hands-on experience with propulsion test benches, preferably with storable/legacy propellants. * Strong background in fluid systems, pressurized systems, and ground support equipment. * Demonstrated experience delivering complex engineering facilities from concept to commissioning. * Knowledge of safety-critical systems, industrial automation, and test operations. * Experience with site qualification, permitting, or regulated industrial environments. * Excellent communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders. * Experience in vacuum test facility design and operation * Experience with team management would be a plus Why you should join us! We want you as a talented Propulsion Thermal Engineer to support the design, analysis, and validation of thermal behavior within Nyx Earth propulsion system. The role focuses on evaluating heat transfer phenomena associated with thruster operation, including heat soak back effects and thermal interactions between closely integrated propulsion components. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES In your capacity as Propulsion Thermal Engineer, your role will be continuously evolving, but day to day your duties will include: * Thermal analysis of thruster interaction with the system * Perform detailed thermal analyses of spacecraft thrusters during steady-state and transient phases. * Assess and justify transient heat soak back effects following thruster shutdown, including impact on surrounding structures and components. * Develop thermal models to predict temperature evolution in propulsion subsystem. * Support and propose design decisions to mitigate adverse thermal interactions. * Modeling & Simulation * Build and correlate thermal mathematical models (Thermal Desktop, ...). * Conduct transient and steady-state simulations. * Perform sensitivity analyses and trade-offs. * Verification & Validation * Support thermal test campaigns (component and system level). * Correlate analytical models with test data. * Documentation & Reviews * Produce technical reports to support design reviews (CDR, QR). * Interface with propulsion, mechanical, and system engineering teams. WHAT WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE FROM YOU * Master’s degree or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field with specialization in thermal sciences. * Experience with propulsion system thermal justification * Strong understanding of: * Heat transfer (conduction, radiation, convection where applicable) * Transient thermal behavior * High-temperature material behavior * Experience with thermal analysis tools (Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT). * Programming/scripting skills (Python, MATLAB) for automation. * Knowledge of spacecraft propulsion systems * Familiarity with ECSS or NASA thermal standards. * Experience in spacecraft development lifecycle. * Cross-disciplinary collaboration * Technical reporting and communication Why you should join us! As a talented Propulsion CFD Engineer, you will be responsible for the computational fluid dynamics analysis of propulsion system components and thruster plumes, providing the flow physics insight that underpins component design, thruster performance, and vehicle-level integration decisions. ROLE OVERVIEW CFD Analysis & Component Simulation * Perform CFD simulations of propulsion components — valves, regulators, orifices, injectors, feed lines — to characterize internal flow, pressure drop, and flow-induced loads. * Support design trade studies by predicting component-level performance across the operating envelope, in both steady-state and transient conditions. * Identify and help resolve flow anomalies such as cavitation, choking, or flow separation that affect component performance. Plume Characterization & Thruster Performance * Model thruster plume characterization, from near-field continuum expansion through far-field rarefied flow, including relevant gas dynamics effects. * Assess plume-induced thermal, contamination, and force/torque effects on adjacent subsystems and vehicle surfaces. * Support thruster and nozzle design by predicting performance parameters such as thrust coefficient and specific impulse from CFD. Cross-Functional Design Collaboration * Work closely with propulsion design engineers and structural and thermal analysts to translate CFD results into actionable design inputs and margins. * Communicate CFD findings and their implications clearly to multidisciplinary teams and program stakeholders. * Support system-level trades on component sizing, thruster placement, and plume shielding for vehicle interfaces. Model Validation, Tools & Documentation * Validate and correlate CFD models against test data — cold-flow testing, hot-fire testing, plume diagnostics — to build and maintain model confidence. * Maintain and improve CFD simulation workflows, meshing practices, and tools to improve turnaround time and consistency across the design office. * Produce clear technical reports and analysis documentation supporting design reviews and certification. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES LOCATION You will perform your duties principally at the Company's premises in Bordeaux and may be required to travel from time to time to our company’s premises in Munich in the course of your duties. WHAT WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE FROM YOU * M.S. or Ph.D. in aerospace or a related field, with 3+ years of hands-on CFD experience relevant to propulsion or fluid dynamics. * Proficiency with CFD software such as ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, OpenFOAM, or equivalent. * Experience modeling compressible, multiphase, and/or rarefied gas flows relevant to propulsion valves and thruster plumes. * Familiarity with plume characterization methods such as DSMC or continuum-rarefied coupling is a strong plus. * Strong grounding in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and gas dynamics fundamentals. * Experience correlating CFD predictions against test data. * Familiarity with scripting or automation (Python, MATLAB) for meshing, post-processing, or workflow automation. * Fluent in English.
