Description We seek a PhD student in Innovation Sciences with the subject focus on Innovations in Energy and Environment The PhD student will be a central part of the new research project Smart Renewable Energy Systems (SmartRESs) which investigates how to improve the energy flows of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with both photovoltaics (PV), electric vehicles (EVs) and biogas production. The SmartRESs project is part of the Halmstad University ProActS research program, a multidisciplinary research collaboration on sustainability and circularity.   The PhD project is inherently interdisciplinary, uniquely combining innovation science, energy technology, and computer science to study how circular, sustainable, and renewable energy systems can be designed, implemented, and adopted within SMEs. The research project integrates perspectives and methods from all disciplines, and the PhD student is expected to engage in all parts while the exact balance between innovation-oriented and technical work can be adapted to the PhD students background, interests, and competencies. The PhD student will have a supervision team which includes experts from all fields. For the innovation science perspective, the PhD student will map and describe the value creation potential of SmartRESs in SMEs. This includes investigating barriers, drivers, value intentions, and organizational conditions that affect implementation of SmartRESs, and how the system is perceived and adopted by business managers and decision makers. For the perspective of energy technology and computer science, the PhD student will develop a model using data from collaborating SMEs to simulate the potential gains from SmartRESs. Furthermore, the PhD student will explore how the system best can be designed and, at a later stage, design a proof of concept together with project partners. The employment is initially funded for 2 years, making it possible to achieve a Licentiate degree. To pursue a full PhD degree, the candidate and supervisors are obliged to apply for additional external funding. Eligibility and assessment criteria Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programs at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. About the Survey & Design team: The Survey & Design team is part of the Acquisition Area of Aira, which is responsible for the entire sales journey, from lead generation to installed heat pump. When selling a heat pump system, you need to know what size of heat pump should be installed and whether any radiators need replacing. The role In this role, you will lead the development of MEMS products from early concept through prototype, combining technical depth with structured project management. Customers typically come to Silex with a design concept, and together with our CAD Engineers and technical experts, you will evaluate and shape that design to ensure it is manufacturable. Early in the process, you will bring together specialists from different process areas to define a robust concept and create a scalable process flow, and a recipe for the new product. As the project progresses into the prototype phase, you will own the overall execution — ensuring timelines are met, risks are managed, and technical challenges are solved along the way. A part of the role is hands-on work in the cleanroom. After each process step, you will evaluate the outcome using tools such as SEM analysis to determine whether the desired result has been achieved. Based on your findings, you will work closely with Process Engineers to tweak parameters in processes to achieve the desired result. Finally, you’re responsible for the delivery of the final prototype to the client. To ensure a strong start, you’ll receive hands-on training from an experienced colleague to familiarize you with our development process and tools before being in client discussions. After a while, you will start acting as the technical interface towards customers, leading discussions around progress, challenges, and next steps. In this role, you will Drive MEMS development projects from concept to the delivery of a final prototype. Evaluate customer designs and ensure manufacturability together with CAD and process experts. Define process flows and build fabrication recipes for new products. Bring together cross-functional experts early in the project to ensure a robust concept. Analyze process results using SEM and other characterization methods. Collaborate with Process Engineers to achieve desired results after each fabrication step. Own project timelines, order portfolios, progress, and delivery. Identify risks, troubleshoot issues, and ensure forward momentum. Act as the technical lead towards customers. Lead technical discussions, reporting, and planning. What We’re Looking For A Master’s degree or PhD with coursework in microfabrication/ nanotechnology. Experience with microfabrication through work or academic research, ideally using processes like lithography, plasma deposition and plasma etching. Strong communication skills and the ability to discuss technical topics in English. Swedish is considered highly beneficial as a lot of internal documentation is written in Swedish.
