A note on using AI in your job application
As a fast-moving and rapidly evolving tech company, we embrace the advantages of AI and encourage its use throughout our
application process. However, our goal is to get to know and hire the authentic you. Your skills, experience, and values. We don’t
want to hire an AI-generated version of you. We consider AI to be a valuable tool, not something that should overshadow you as an
individual.
How we use AI in the hiring process
Candidate experience is really important to us, and our Talent team use AI notetakers on interviews so that they can focus purely
on their conversation with you. All decisions are made by humans, not AI. Let us know if you have any questions!

We are seeking a versatile and highly skilled Principal Software Engineer who can work seamlessly across our frontend and backend services—from designing highly performant, intuitive modern user interfaces to building robust API services, Model Context Protocol (MCP) services, and autonomous AI agents. In this role, you will lead the architecture, design, and deployment of scalable Generative AI solutions, ensuring seamless integration into our core planning workflows. This is a unique role requiring deep software engineering expertise across both frontend and backend development, combined with hands-on experience building production-ready GenAI features. You will bridge the gap between backend APIs, custom MCP services, agentic workflows, and responsive modern user interfaces to deliver intelligent, automated planning experiences for our global customers. Your Impact * Technical Leadership & System Architecture: Architect, design, and deploy scalable Generative AI solutions, autonomous AI agents, and full-stack services (frontends and backend services) into production environments. * End-to-End GenAI Development: Build comprehensive GenAI features including backend API services, custom tools, LLM model integration, and evaluation harnesses. * AI Agents & MCP Integration: Design, build, and maintain Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and services that securely expose backend data and enterprise tools to agentic AI workflows. Implement robust orchestration, tool-calling capabilities, and multi-agent coordination. * Full-Stack Engineering: Drive best practices across our full stack, guiding the development of responsive frontend applications (React/TypeScript) and robust, scalable backend services (Python, Java, Kotlin, or Node.js). * LLM Observability & Reliability: Establish robust LLM observability, evaluations, and caching, implementing latency optimisations and comprehensive monitoring (logging, usage tracking, agent behaviour). * Operational Excellence: Champion high availability, performance optimisation, and observability across frontends and backend microservices, focusing on practices that maintain platform reliability and optimise MTTD and MTTR. * Mentorship & Collaboration: Elevate the engineering organisation by mentoring senior and junior engineers, conducting rigorous code and system design reviews, and partnering with product managers to translate product visions into actionable technical roadmaps. Qualifications * Experience: Extensive professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of delivering complex, high-quality technical projects in a senior or principal role. * AI & Agentic Production Exposure: Deep hands-on experience designing, deploying, and scaling agentic AI workflows, tool integrations, and GenAI features in production environments. * Full-Stack Expertise: High proficiency in modern frontend frameworks (specifically React and TypeScript) and robust backend development languages (Python, Java/Kotlin, or Node.js). * GenAI & MCP Knowledge: Deep understanding of LLM APIs, prompt engineering, agentic/multi-agent architectures, and building/consuming Model Context Protocol (MCP) services. * System Observability & Quality: Strong experience with application observability, logging, and performance monitoring across distributed backend systems and frontend applications. * Communication & Collaboration: Exceptional communication skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across engineering, product, and design teams to take ideas from prototype to production. Desirable Skills * Agentic Tools & Frameworks: Hands-on experience with agent orchestration frameworks and integrating AI agents with enterprise platforms. * Observability Tooling: Experience with GenAI observability and evaluation tools. * Industry Domain: Previous experience in Enterprise Performance Management (EPM), financial planning, business analytics, or related enterprise SaaS environments. * Community Contributions: Contributions to open-source agent frameworks, MCP servers, or published research in distributed systems or Generative AI. Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) We believe attracting and retaining the best talent and fostering an inclusive culture strengthens our business. Are you ready to shape the future of data? Matillion is the company behind Maia, the AI Data Automation platform. In the AI economy, demand for data is exploding. Manual data engineering can’t keep up. Maia fixes that by combining 15 years of data expertise with agentic AI to eliminate the manual work that slows data teams down. Organisations like Cisco, DocuSign, and Slack are already using it to deliver real business impact, faster. We started in Manchester and now we’re global - with teams across the UK, US and India. We are driven, curious, energetic people who move fast, think big and hold ourselves to a high standard. We’re here to make a dent in the universe bigger than ourselves. And we’re looking for people who want to be part of it. About the Role As Senior Product Manager, you'll own a significant slice of the Maia product, working at the intersection of complex user problems, AI capability and commercial impact. We need someone who understands what a genuinely great product experience looks like and holds the bar for it relentlessly. You'll be user-obsessed and data-driven in equal measure. You'll ship dashboards, track leading indicators, run evals and use AI tooling in your own workflow to move faster. We're not prescriptive about your background - whether you've scaled a product at a larger company or moved fast at a startup, what matters is that you've done both at some point and you know the difference. Breadth of scope is easy. We need someone who can go deep. We believe great product work happens through collaboration - which is why this role ideally follows our hybrid working pattern of two days a week in our Manchester city centre offices. That said, we know the right person isn't always on our doorstep, so we're open to flexibility for candidates based elsewhere in the UK. What matters most is the quality of thinking you bring, not where you sit.
