At Umain we're crafting the future, one innovative project at a time. With our motto "Shape, Ship, Scale," we empower our team to envision the future and play a pivotal role in building it. We're a dynamic team where you can shape the future, ship groundbreaking solutions, and scale your abilities in many different ways.
We are now looking for Senior Backend Engineers who want to build robust solutions that power products used by millions of people.
400M+ total app downloads
50M+ monthly active users
Backends handling tens of thousands of requests per second
Globally recognized, multi-market applications
The office in Gothenburg is our default workplace, but we stay flexible when working from home makes sense for the team or the project. We trust each other to coordinate and keep things professional.
Most of our work is built in Kotlin, Go, and TypeScript, and we aim to pick the tools that best fit each project so our teams can focus on delivering the right solution.
The role is broad but centered on backend. You'll work on projects for both Swedish and international companies, including systems that integrate external services, automation, and frontend clients.
Building high-performance, and scalable systems in modern stacks that suit the project.
Designing cloud-native systems with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) across AWS, GCP, and Azure.
Developing robust data models and database architectures to support application requirements.
Building observable systems with the right metrics, logs, tracing, and alerting to understand and operate what we ship.
Building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines with containerized deployments and scaling strategies.
If you're excited by working across the stack, always learning, and making a real impact at scale, we believe you'll feel at home at Umain.
5+ years of experience building and running backend services in production.
Comfortable owning a system end to end, from API design to deployment and operations.
Strong in at least one of our core languages (Kotlin, Go, or TypeScript), and willing to pick up others as projects demand.
Experience making technical decisions on a team: weighing tradeoffs, reviewing code, and mentoring peers.
A product mindset: You think about maintainability, user impact, and long-term health, not just the ticket in front of you.
Familiar with agentic development tools
You treat unfamiliar problems and new technologies as an opportunity rather than a risk. In consulting, the next project often looks nothing like the last one, and you see that as a feature.
A personal coach and support to help you develop both professionally and personally.
A range of diverse projects that explore and push the boundaries of what's possible.
A fun and fair work environment where you can grow through meaningful challenges and great colleagues.
Multidisciplinary teams where backend engineers work closely with product, design, analysis, and testing.
Working alongside some of the largest and most forward-thinking brands on the planet.

We build the backends behind products that millions of people use every day. Our motto is Shape, Ship, Scale: we work out what to build, ship it, and help it grow. Now, we are looking for a senior backend engineer to join us in Gothenburg. We are six people at Umain in Gothenburg today, and we share an office with around 40 colleagues from across Eidra. So it is a small, close team with a much bigger room behind it. The work You will build and run backend systems for Swedish and international clients. The scale is real: * 400M+ total app downloads * 50M+ monthly active users * Backends handling tens of thousands of requests per second Most of our work is in Kotlin, Go, and TypeScript, and we pick the tool that fits the project rather than forcing one stack onto everything. Day to day that can mean designing cloud-native systems with Terraform across AWS, GCP and Azure, building solid data models, making systems observable with proper metrics, logs and tracing, and owning CI/CD with containerised deployments. You own systems end to end, from API design to operations, and you work closely with product, design, analysis and testing rather than in a silo. What we are looking for You are an experienced backend engineer, roughly five years or more building and running services in production, who is comfortable owning a system from start to finish. You are strong in at least one of Kotlin, Go or TypeScript and happy to pick up the others. You make good technical calls in a team: weighing tradeoffs, reviewing code, mentoring colleagues. And you think past the ticket in front of you to maintainability and long-term health. In consulting the next project rarely looks like the last one. If that sounds like a feature rather than a risk, you will fit in well. Familiarity with agentic development tools is a plus. If you do not tick every box, apply anyway. We care more about how you think and what you can do than about a perfect match on paper. How we work * Equal pay and clear progression. Our career framework sets transparent levels, so pay and growth track what you do, not how well you negotiate. You build your development plan together with your coach. * Everyone gets a coach, for both professional and personal development. * Flexibility that respects your life. Gothenburg is our default office and we work from home when it makes sense. We hire people across different ages and life stages, and we treat family, health and life outside work as normal, not as something to manage around. * Small multidisciplinary teams, genuinely interesting clients, and a real bar for quality. Practical Umain conducts a background check for final candidates in accordance with our internal policies. The check is carried out only with your consent and is ordered by our CISO through our approved screening partner. The scope of the check depends on the role level. You will play a key role in designing, developing, and validating our backend system. You will work closely with our software and firmware teams to develop reliable, scalable backend services with a strong focus on quality, testing, and automation. Your experience in backend development and test engineering will be important in shaping and improving our platform. What you will do: Design, develop, and maintain backend services and systems using Go and the Twelve-Factor App methodology. Define and implement test strategies covering functionality, integration, system, regression, and performance testing. Build tools and test harnesses to verify the reliability, scalability, and correctness of distributed systems. Optimize software for performance, efficiency, reliability, and scalability. Troubleshoot, debug, and analyze applications and test results to ensure smooth functionality. Collaborate with front-end developers, firmware engineers, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality software solutions. Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to team members. Your Profile Minimum of 5 years of experience in backend development, test engineering, or a similar role. Proven experience with RESTful API design, implementation, and testing. Strong familiarity with Linux-based IT systems and test or hosting environments. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to make sound trade-offs based on business needs and technical requirements. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. You communicate clearly and are comfortable supporting and mentoring less experienced developers. Strong communication skills in English, written and spoken. Proficiency in Swedish is a plus.

Major offices in Sweden (HQ), Greece, India, Canada, Israel, Poland, UK, and Uruguay. The Team: Platform Services At the heart of this technology is the Platform Services team, a highly technical group responsible for maintaining and evolving the foundational aspects of the Etraveli Group platform. Our mission is to ensure we have a robust environment to build, deliver, and run services—from the very first lines of code in a project to maintainable services running in production, whether in AWS or our own datacenters. We manage our CI/CD setup and cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC), providing project templates and architectural support to development teams and strategically important projects. Today, the team consists of a collaborative mix of cloud infrastructure specialists and tech-focused senior developers. The Role As we grow and expand our support for new teams and projects, we are looking for a Senior Engineer or Hands-on Architect to strengthen our ranks. While the team handles infrastructure, your focus will be on the software side of building services: code, design, system architecture, and CI/CD. In this role, you will certainly draw boxes and arrows on whiteboards to map out designs, but more importantly, you will write and update the code within our templates and CI/CD pipelines to support our developers. You will be a key voice in discussions—both within the team and across the organization—on how to best design and solve complex technical tasks. Requirements To be a good fit for this role, we believe you possess the following qualifications: Experience: At least 10 years as a software developer and/or architect (likely more). Java Expertise: Extensive experience as a Java backend developer, very comfortable in a senior capacity. Polyglot Mindset: Experience with programming languages beyond just Java. Mentorship: You enjoy supporting other developers and can discuss complex software solutions with both teams and stakeholders. CI/CD & Kubernetes: At least some experience with CI/CD (and a willingness to become an expert) and a strong understanding of Kubernetes—including the ability to write and troubleshoot manifest files independently. Broad Technical Interest: An interest in the underlying infrastructure required to run services, as well as a passion for service architecture and IaC (without being "married" to a single tool). Tech Stack Knowledge: Meaningful experience in several of the following: AWS, Linux, shell scripting, Git, Jenkins, Groovy, Typescript, React, Python, MySQL, Couchbase, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Terraform, CDK, CloudFormation, Gradle, Spring Boot, Kubernetes, Helm, OpenSearch, Prometheus, Grafana, observability, security, networking, and testing. Communication: Comfortable speaking and writing in English. Ready to take off from day #1 Thorough On Boarding Process We are building a stellar onboarding adventure just for you, spanning your first 120 days, including access to learning resources, Q&A sessions with our CEO and a buddy program. Competitive Benefits We pay fairly and align compensation with your role's impact on the company. Referral bonus, pension and insurances are also applicable, with some variations across our locations. Wellbeing & Community In order to be the best version of you every day, you need an environment that provides for your wellbeing. From breakfast & good coffee to start your day to healthcare, employee assistance plans and team bonding events we've got you covered! Opportunities for Development You will find extensive learning opportunities, team training and workshops connected to your role as well as guidance from renown leaders, all provided in a fast pace environment with flat hierarchies. Hybrid Work We want you to enjoy the best of all worlds and we know that doesn't always mean working at the office. We have a hybrid policy, including working from anywhere 2 weeks every year. Diversity disclaimer At Etraveli Group we value diversity; we pride ourselves on being a company represented by people of all different backgrounds. During hiring, we are committed to ensure equality and promote diversity in the workplace at every selection stage. As such, we provide the same opportunities for all candidates regardless of race, religion or belief, gender, nationality, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability, or any other characteristic protected under any anti-discrimination law or regulation.
