Malmö University is an innovative, urban, and internationally-oriented academic institution that, thanks to its committed and experienced staff, contributes to societal development. Here, teachers, researchers, and other employees with various competencies work together to conduct high-quality education and research. All professional categories and roles are important. You are welcome to apply for a job with us! Here you can learn more about what it's like to work at Malmö University: Work with us We are looking for A doctoral student in biomedical science at the Faculty of Health and Society. Subject area: Pharmaceutical science with specialisation in drug delivery and biophysical characterisation of biopharmaceutical products for inhalation therapy. Work duties A doctoral student shall primarily devote themselves to their own doctoral education. However, a doctoral student may, to a limited extent, work with education, other research or artistic research and administration, though not more than 20 per cent of full-time working hours (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Section 2). BioInhale is a research project at Malmö University that has been awarded funding from the Knowledge Foundation. The project aims to promote the development of inhalation-based drug therapy by clarifying how drug molecules, from small molecules to macromolecules, interact with the lung epithelium during aerosolisation and deposition, dissolution and permeation, as well as clearance/elimination, thereby showing how regional differences in the lung govern drug distribution and disposition. Pulmonary drug administration (inhalation therapy) is being explored increasingly for the treatment of various diseases, as it shows potential to improve safety, target specificity and pharmacokinetic profile compared with conventional routes of administration. At the same time, the human airways constitute an intricate and heterogeneous structure with pronounced regional physiological variations. The airways function as a barrier between the body’s internal and external environments, enable gas exchange and perform central functions such as conditioning inhaled air, mucociliary clearance and immune signalling. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with six Swedish and international industrial partners: Emmace Consulting, Bioneer, MatTek, Inhalation Sciences, Truly Labs and Magle ChemoSwed, as well as with advice from leading pharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca. The collaboration with industry, universities and research infrastructures ensures access to cutting-edge expertise and advanced research resources. The project comprises two doctoral students working in parallel within the project. This position focuses on pharmaceutical analysis and biopharmaceutics in inhalation therapy. As a doctoral student, you will work at the interface between pharmaceutical science, biophysics, aerosol science and drug development. The duties include developing and characterising inhalation formulations for both small molecules and biological drugs, studying aerosol generation and deposition in the airways, and investigating drug dissolution, permeation, retention and clearance in the lung. The project also includes biophysical characterisation and experimental studies of how macromolecules interact with and are transported across the biological barriers of the lung. In addition, the work includes analysis and modelling of data to increase understanding of how regional differences in the lung affect drug distribution and pharmacokinetics. Qualifications To be admitted to doctoral studies, the applicant must meet the general and the specific eligibility requirements for the subject, and must also be subject and having the ability otherwise required to benefit from the programme. General eligibility for doctoral studies (in accordance with Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance) is met by a person who: • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, • has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at second-cycle level, or • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad. Specific eligibility for doctoral studies is met by a person who has: At least 90 higher education credits, of which 30 higher education credits are at second-cycle level, in biomedical science or in a subject relevant to the current research area, or who has otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. Adequate knowledge of English is also required. Selection criteria Selection among applicants who meet the general and specific eligibility requirements shall be based on their ability to benefit from the programme (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, Section 41). General selection criteria When selecting among applicants for an advertised doctoral position, the ability to benefit from doctoral education is used as the criterion. Experience with biophysical and structural characterisation techniques, such as X-ray scattering, FTIR spectroscopy, confocal microscopy or electrochemical methods, including impedance spectroscopy, is also considered a merit. Experience with statistical processing, mathematical modelling, data analysis and/or interpretation of complex biological data is also considered a merit. Its focus is on organisations, governance, political instruments, and decision-making processes, as well as studies of international migration and migration-related social issues. Read more about the Department of Global Political Studies here. Doctoral programme in IMER Scholars within IMER study, among other subjects, the national, regional, international, and global causes and effects of migration in both the society of origin and destination on a structural, institutional, collective, and individual level. IMER is an inherently multi- and interdisciplinary subject, in which for instance sociology, political science, cultural geography, anthropology, economic history, economics, social work, history, ethnology, religious studies, gender studies, and cultural studies are represented. The goal of the programme is to develop the knowledge and skills required for the doctoral student to conduct research independently and contribute to the development of knowledge within the chosen subject area. The doctoral programme comprises 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies), of which 60 credits are from courses. Read more about Malmö Institute for Migration Studies here. Research Programme Migration Society 2.0 The Department of Global Political Studies is looking for a doctoral student as part of the research programme "Migration Society 2.0". The programme is funded by Malmö University within the framework of the research centre MIM and involves collaboration with other MIM researchers and the centre director on the project. The research programme is about the phenomenon of superdiversity and aims to increase the understanding of the new society that is emerging, Migration Society 2.0. Superdiversity is partly about quantity, that is, the growing proportion of the population that is immigrants or children of immigrants, and partly about complexity, that is, the variation and mix of ethnicities, national origins, migration channels, transnational anchor points, legal status, gender and age distribution, social class, etc. This development places new demands on how we think about and handle integration issues and inclusion and exclusion processes. However, there is not yet a comprehensive knowledge base for how this diversity has developed and is experienced in Sweden. MIM will therefore conduct a series of large-scale surveys on diversity and inclusion that will be repeated every two years. These surveys will generate a growing database that helps us understand and explain the patterns of migration, diversity, inclusion and exclusion that characterize Sweden and other comparable countries. The survey will map diversity based on self-identified information about, for example, ethnicity, gender, religion, language, sexuality and social status, as well as perceived belonging, views on other groups and perceptions of social institutions. The doctoral student is expected to formulate and carry out an independent individual research project using the Diversity and Inclusion Survey. In the application, the applicant must therefore attach a research plan with a preliminary idea of how diversity and inclusion can be investigated through survey studies. Applicants with an original and solid research plan characterized by theoretical and methodological maturity will be prioritized.
