BioInhale is a research project at Malmö University that has been awarded funding from the Knowledge Foundation. The project aims to promote the development of inhalation-based drug therapy by clarifying how drug molecules, from small molecules to macromolecules, interact with the lung epithelium during aerosolization and deposition, dissolution and permeation, as well as clearance/elimination, thereby showing how regional differences in the lung govern drug distribution and disposition. Pulmonary drug administration (inhalation therapy) is increasingly being explored for the treatment of various diseases, as it shows potential to improve safety, target specificity, and pharmacokinetic profile compared with conventional routes of administration. At the same time, the human airways constitute an intricate and heterogeneous structure with pronounced regional physiological variation. The airways function as a barrier between the body’s internal and external environments, enable gas exchange, and perform central functions such as conditioning inhaled air, mucociliary clearance, and immune signaling. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with six Swedish and international industrial partners: Emmace Consulting, Bioneer, MatTek, Inhalation Sciences, Truly Labs, and Magle ChemoSwed, as well as with advice from leading pharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca. The collaboration with industry, universities, and research infrastructures ensures access to cutting-edge expertise and advanced research resources. The project includes two doctoral students working in parallel within the project. This position is focused on biopharmaceutics and advanced lung models for inhalation therapy. As a doctoral student, you will work at the interface between pharmaceutical science, cell biology, tissue engineering, and inhalation therapy. The duties include the development and characterization of advanced 3D-cell- and tissue models that mimic the biological barriers and physiology of the lung. The work includes culture and analysis of cell-based models, biochemical and molecular studies, and evaluation of peptide- and protein-based drugs and inhalation formulations. The position also includes the development and application of preclinical models, including both ex vivo and in vivo models, to study how inhaled drugs interact with lung tissue and to evaluate new drug delivery systems for inhalation therapy. Subject area The project focuses on the development and evaluation of gold nanoparticles functionalised with reversible self-assembled monolayers (rSAM) as multivalent inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 entry in a physiologically relevant model of lung epithelium. The focus is on the development and characterisation of both 2D and 3D model surfaces, including preparation and functionalisation using rSAM technology, physicochemical characterisation of the materials, and sample preparation for antiviral studies and protein-binding studies. Job description You will have specific responsibility for conducting experimental studies focusing on the development, preparation and functionalisation of nanoparticles and surfaces using rSAM technology. The work includes physicochemical characterisation of materials using techniques such as ATR-FTIR, ellipsometry, SPR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, DLS and contact angle measurements, as well as studies of protein interactions with surfaces and nanoparticles. You will also contribute to sample preparation for antiviral studies and protein-binding studies. The work is carried out in close collaboration with researchers in cell biology and includes regular collection, processing, reporting and presentation of results within the research group. The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. ESS will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. We are now inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Small-Angle Neutron Scattering of Biocompatible Microgels. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is a powerful technique for investigating the structure and dynamics of scientifically and technologically important soft and complex materials across nanometre-to-micrometre length scales. Energy materials, biomaterials, colloidal systems, and functional nanostructures are prime examples of systems whose properties and performance depend critically on hierarchical structures and processes occurring over these length scales. This project focuses on developing and characterising a new class of biocompatible thermoresponsive microgels for biomedical and soft matter applications. The work combines neutron scattering, rheology, advanced sample environments, and molecular simulations to understand how the internal structure and softness of poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) microgels influence their behaviour in dense suspensions and under flow. The goals are: Develop an understanding of the structure, mechanics, and flow behaviour of PVCL microgels Develop and implement a 1,2-shear cell for rheo-SANS and rheo-SAXS experiments at ESS and MAX IV, that will allow to measure scattered intensity in the velocity-gradient plane, the most sensitive to shear-induced deformations. Combine neutron scattering experiments with molecular simulations to establish predictive models for soft colloidal systems relevant to biomedical applications The Opportunity We are seeking an independent and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with experience in microgels - particularly synthesis and/or neutron scattering techniques. You will be part of the Large Scale Structures Division at the ESS in Lund and supervised by the ESS LOKI team (Judith Houston). You will benefit from research supervision and collaboration with the Laurati group at the University of Florence (https://www.csgi.unifi.it/person.php?p=330), who are experts in soft colloid synthetic procedures, and their characterisation using scattering and rheology techniques, and the Zaccarelli group at the Sapienza University of Rome (https://www.roma1.infn.it/~zaccarel/curriculum.htm) who are experts in molecular dynamic simulations. The collaboration will involve the first year based in Italy for knowledge transfer, training and supervision, sample preparation, and access to their laboratories. Your Role and Responsibilities Collaboration with research groups at ESS, the University of Florence, and Sapienza University of Rome. Laboratory work involving synthesis, characterisation, and rheological measurements of PVCL microgels Neutron and x-ray scattering experiments at ESS, MAX IV, and international large-scale facilities Develop and commission a custom 1,2-shear cell for rheo-SANS/rheo-SAXS measurements. Test and validate the developed sample environment at ESS and leading neutron (e.g., ILL, ISIS) and X-ray facilities (e.g. Diamond, MaxIV), ensuring reliability and robustness. Perform molecular dynamics and coarse-grained simulations of microgels and dense suspensions to quantitatively interpret scattering data and establish universal models for soft colloids Conduct and develop independent research in line with the LOKI science case. På avdelningen bedriver vi forskning och utbildning om energigenerering, omvandling och användning i olika elektro- och termomekaniska system där studier av värmeöverföring, strömningsmekanik, reaktiva flöden samt strukturmekanik spelar en central roll. I synnerhet är förbättrad förståelse för turbulenta, reaktiva- och flerfasflöden tillsammans med materialvetenskap och nya tillverkningstekniker nyckeln till förbättrade värmeöverföringsmekanismer och effektivare användning av energi. Vid avdelningen arbetar cirka 25 kollegor, varav 15 doktorander. På internationell nivå samarbetar vi med universitet och institut i Europa, Asien och Nordamerika. COMPEL vid Lunds universitet inkluderar initialt forskare vid tio institutioner och tre forskningsområden har identifierats för strategisk utveckling: materialforskning, integration av batterier med kraftelektronik och säker energilagring. På utbildningssidan utökas antal platser inom flera civilingenjörsprogram och kursutbudet relaterat till batteriteknik och elektrifiering stärks. Särskild ämnesbeskrivning Detta projekt fokuserar på utvecklingen av GPU-accelererade, högupplösta simuleringsmodeller för termisk rusning i litiumjonbattericeller, moduler, batteripack och kompletta batterisystem. Termisk rusning är en kedjereaktion som leder till en okontrollerad frigörelse av den energi som lagras i en battericell, vilket kan resultera i bränder och andra farliga händelser som är svåra att begränsa. I takt med att batterisystem blir större och mer komplexa ökar behovet av beräkningseffektiva prediktiva verktyg som kan beskriva de underliggande fysikaliska och kemiska processerna över flera skalor. Projektet kommer att genomföras i samarbete med Scania Industrial Battery Systems och partnerna inom COMPEL. Det huvudsakliga målet med postdoktorprojektet är att utveckla nästa generations GPU-baserade simuleringsmetodik i OpenFOAM för att förutsäga initiering och utbredning av termisk rusning på cell och modulnivå. Särskild tonvikt kommer att läggas på att utnyttja moderna heterogena beräkningsarkitekturer för att möjliggöra storskaliga, högupplösta simuleringar av reagerande strömningar. De modeller som utvecklas på cellnivå kommer därefter att kopplas till simuleringar på modul-, pack- och systemnivå för att förbättra förmågan att förutsäga hur termisk rusning sprids i praktiska batterisystem. Arbetsuppgifter I arbetsuppgifterna som postdoktor ingår främst att bedriva forskning. Även undervisning kan ingå i arbetsuppgifterna, dock högst en femtedel av arbetstiden. Subject area: Pharmaceutical science with specialisation in drug delivery and biophysical characterisation of biopharmaceutical products for inhalation therapy. BioInhale is a research project at Malmö University that has been awarded funding from the Knowledge Foundation. The project aims to promote the development of inhalation-based drug therapy by clarifying how drug molecules, from small molecules to macromolecules, interact with the lung epithelium during aerosolisation and deposition, dissolution and permeation, as well as clearance/elimination, thereby showing how regional differences in the lung govern drug distribution and disposition. Pulmonary drug administration (inhalation therapy) is being explored increasingly for the treatment of various diseases, as it shows potential to improve safety, target specificity and pharmacokinetic profile compared with conventional routes of administration. At the same time, the human airways constitute an intricate and heterogeneous structure with pronounced regional physiological variations. The airways function as a barrier between the body’s internal and external environments, enable gas exchange and perform central functions such as conditioning inhaled air, mucociliary clearance and immune signalling. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with six Swedish and international industrial partners: Emmace Consulting, Bioneer, MatTek, Inhalation Sciences, Truly Labs and Magle ChemoSwed, as well as with advice from leading pharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca. The collaboration with industry, universities and research infrastructures ensures access to cutting-edge expertise and advanced research resources. The project comprises two doctoral students working in parallel within the project. This position focuses on pharmaceutical analysis and biopharmaceutics in inhalation therapy. As a doctoral student, you will work at the interface between pharmaceutical science, biophysics, aerosol science and drug development. The duties include developing and characterising inhalation formulations for both small molecules and biological drugs, studying aerosol generation and deposition in the airways, and investigating drug dissolution, permeation, retention and clearance in the lung. The project also includes biophysical characterisation and experimental studies of how macromolecules interact with and are transported across the biological barriers of the lung. In addition, the work includes analysis and modelling of data to increase understanding of how regional differences in the lung affect drug distribution and pharmacokinetics. Qualifications To be admitted to doctoral studies, the applicant must meet the general and the specific eligibility requirements for the subject, and must also be subject and having the ability otherwise required to benefit from the programme. The project aims to develop and validate standardized methods for using oral fluids, primarily saliva, as diagnostic sample material. Through BioLabX, the doctoral student will also become part of a national network of doctoral students, supervisors, and teachers in biomedical laboratory science. The aim of the doctoral project is to establish robust workflows for multi-omics analyses, with a particular focus on metabolomics and proteomics. Through standardized sampling, sample handling, analysis, and data interpretation, the project will help ensure that biomarkers in oral fluids can be identified and validated in a reproducible manner. The project includes method development, analytical validation, clinical application, and targeted biomarker validation, using periodontitis as a model for inflammatory disease. As a doctoral student, you will work at the intersection of biomedical laboratory science, clinical diagnostics, analytical chemistry, and data-driven medicine. Specific entry requirements for doctoral studies and study programmes have those who: Successful completion of at least 90 ECTS, of which 30 ECTS are at an advanced level, in a subject relevant for the current research field or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way. Adequate knowledge in English is also required. A license as a biomedical laboratory scientist (BMA-legitimation) or a Bachelor’s degree in biomedical laboratory science. Selection criteria Selection among applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements shall be made with regard to their capacity to assimilate the education (HEO Chapter 7 Section 41). General selection criteria In the assessment of applicants for admission to third-cycle studies, the ability to benefit from the third-cycle studies is used as suitable criteria. To assess this ability, previous study results, essays, term papers, reports, research plans, any research qualifications and documented work experience are taken into consideration. Special importance is attached to independent work at first (undergraduate) and advanced levels. Specific selection criteria Experience in bioanalytical method development, work with biological sample materials, sample preparation, analytical validation, or analytical methods relevant to clinical laboratory diagnostics and the tasks described above is considered a merit. Experience in omics-based analyses, chromatographic, mass spectrometric, immunological, or other bioanalytical methods is particularly relevant. Experience in statistical processing, data analysis, and/or interpretation of complex biological data is also considered a merit. Documented very good ability to communicate in English, both spoken and written. A good ability to work independently, take initiative, and contribute flexibly in interdisciplinary research environments is considered a merit. Faculty, Department and Research environment The position is based at the Department of Biomedical Science, Faculty of Health and Society, Malmö University. The department has an interdisciplinary profile, where research and education combine biology, chemistry, medicine, and physics. The research focuses on biomedical technology as well as cell and molecular biology with an immunological profile. We offer education at bachelor’s and master’s level and work in close collaboration with healthcare services and industry. The doctoral project will be carried out in an interdisciplinary research environment with strong links to both clinical diagnostics and education in biomedical laboratory science. The project is connected to the Biofilms Research Center for Biointerfaces (BRCB), a research center at the interface between the life sciences and materials science, where researchers from the faculties of Health and Society, Odontology, and Technology and Society collaborate. Our vision is to create new solutions for improved health through outstanding science in close collaboration with industry. The research project is part of the national research school BioLabX, a collaboration between the University of Gothenburg, Karolinska Institutet, Linköping University, Malmö University, Umeå University, Uppsala University, and Örebro University. The research school aims to promote collaboration and knowledge exchange between healthcare and academia, where doctoral students with a biomedical laboratory science background will develop into the teachers of the future. A doctoral student shall be employed for an indefinite period but for no longer than until a specified date, and never for longer than a year after the doctoral degree or artistic doctoral degree has been completed. The first appointment must be limited to one year at the most. The appointment can be extended by a maximum of two years at a time.
