Project Controls Manager  The European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science.  We are now looking for a Project Controls Manager to oversee the operational and development project scope at ESS.     About the role:  The Project Controls Manager (PCM) plays a critical role in ensuring the best use of the human and financial resources for the ESS organisation. They are responsible for establishing and maintaining the systems, processes, and governance needed to plan, monitor, and control organisational performance and the ESS programme. The role provides leadership across planning and scheduling, cost control, risk management, change control, and reporting to support informed decision-making and successful delivery. Working closely with project managers, technical leads, finance, procurement, operations, and other stakeholders, the PCM will have a central overview of both the operational and development project scope.  This is a permanent role based at ESS campus in Lund, Sweden.     Day-to-day, you will:  Supervise a team managing cost control, planning, risk, change control and reporting functions.   Lead the development, maintenance, and governance of integrated schedules using Primavera P6. We are now looking for an Instrument Scientist for the HEIMDAL powder diffractometer. The position is with the Diffraction & Imaging Division. About the division The Diffraction & Imaging Division consists of the scientific staff that are leading the instrument construction projects and the staff that will eventually execute the day-to-day operations of six neutron instruments. The upcoming responsibilities of the division are Finalize the installation and commissioning of all instruments in the division Deliver state-of-the-art scientific capabilities for internal and external users to enable the wider science community to advance science and technology Deliver scientific results from the neutron instruments in collaboration with the user community and other divisions in the science directorate Plan and implement further developments and upgrades of the instruments Push the state-of-the-art capabilities of neutron instrumentation to make maximum benefit from the ESS source. Main Responsibilities HEIMDAL is a multiscale diffractometer that, in its full scope, will enable studies of functional materials across a wide range of length scales, from conventional powder diffraction to the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) regime (possible future upgrade). The construction of the diffractometer part of the instrument is ongoing and expected to be completed in 2027. The immediate mission is to finalize the installation of the instrument and take part in the commissioning of the instrument without and with neutrons. The instrument scientist will work closely with the core instrument team at ESS, comprising another instrument scientist, an instrument computational scientist, and an instrument operational engineer, and in strong interaction with partner institutions and ESS technical services. The successful candidate must be active in a scientific field of direct relevance to HEIMDAL. Essential qualifications and experience: PhD in experimental studies in the physical sciences relevant to the HEIMDAL scientific programme, preferably in energy or nanoscaled materials. Practical experience in neutron powder diffraction Working knowledge of the data analysis for diffraction software GSAS-II, TOPAS, FullProf, Jana2006, PDFgui Evidence of an independent research profile in relevant science areas supported by a publication record Ability to work collaboratively and individually Good interpersonal communication and presentation skills, and the ability to interact effectively with staff and users at all levels. The instrument scientist will work closely with the core instrument team at ESS, comprising another instrument scientist, an instrument computational scientist, and an instrument operational engineer, and in strong interaction with partner institutions and ESS technical services. New designs for a wide range of neutron instruments are being implemented to fully leverage the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source.   The primary purpose of TBL is characterizing the target-reflector-moderator system and verifying the performance of the neutron source based on operating parameters such as proton beam energy, stability, pulse length, and beam rastering, as well as the moderator conditions. An important aspect of this work will be comparing the measured and simulated neutronic performance of the moderator, providing a crucial reference for various neutron scattering instruments. Additionally, the TBL will contribute to optimizing instruments and methods to fully exploit the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source. The TBL will function as a local characterization station, supporting technical developments in areas such as neutron optics, polarization, and novel detectors. It is designed to support the user program by performing exploratory imaging experiments, neutron diffraction studies, and single-crystal alignment. Due to the flexibility of the instrument, a variety of detectors and sample environments can be fitted inside the experimental cave, allowing multipurpose measurements on not only thermal neutrons but also epithermal/fast neutrons and gamma rays. This includes but is not limited to a well-established technique such as time-of-flight transmission measurements, neutron tomography, neutron activation analysis, grating interferometry, etc. As the facility evolves, the modular design of the TBL will allow for modifications to meet new objectives, ensuring its continued relevance and utility in advancing neutron science. Once ESS transitions into operations in early 2027, we will provide operational support for all sample environments on the instruments in close collaboration with scientists, as well as continuing the development of new sample environments. We are now seeking a Sample Environment Engineer to support the development, commissioning and the operations of high temperature furnaces, as well as related gas handling and pressurized gas systems. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering sample environment projects in these areas, working in close collaboration with other members of the Sample environment group as well as academic research groups to develop new equipment and provide operational support for early science experiments at ESS. As part of this role, you will specifically develop new sample environments in collaboration with the universities participating in the ESS Early Science Initiative project “Sustainable and functional materials from local resources” funded by the Swedish Research Council. Day-to-day, you will: Specify, design, develop and procure equipment for high temperature/gas handling and pressurized sample environment systems. Work with academic researchers to develop technical specifications and propose solutions and designs to meet scientific requirements. Assemble, integrate and commission sample environments and associated equipment. Install, operate, maintain and repair high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems and related equipment. About you   You have up to an MSc level degree in an engineering subject (e.g. mechanical, materials or metallurgical engineering) with relevance to this position, which focuses on the development and practical realization of high temperature and pressurized gas handling systems for scientific measurements. Previous experience of design as well as hands-on work experience with high-temperature equipment and gas handling/pressurised gas systems is required. You also have previous experience of mechanical assembly, maintenance and repairs, as well as relevant knowledge of material behavior at high temperatures and hazards involved in pressurized gas systems.   Experience of developing scientific or technical equipment involving controlling or monitoring temperature, mass, gas pressure or other experimental parameters would be considered particularly beneficial for this role. The European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. About the role: As ESS gets closer to its steady-state operations phase, we're looking for an Electronics Technician to join our Radio Frequency (RF) Group. The RF Group is part of the Accelerator division at ESS, and is responsible for defining, designing, installing, commissioning and maintaining the complex systems and amplifiers required for the operation of our particle accelerator. We are looking for a technician to assist with testing, operation and maintenance of high-powered amplifiers, power supplies and electronics. You will be working closely with, and assisting other members of, the RF group - as well as having your own short- and longer-term assignments. While much of the work is of an electronics and RF nature, we’re looking for a versatile technician who wants to learn new skills to take on a variety of tasks.  Day-to-day, you will: Assist with electrical and mechanical installation of the RF systems including rack mounted components, cabling and assembly. Read, maintain and update electrical schematics and mechanical drawings. Carry out testing of components on delivery, following installation and when in operation. Follow established procedures and document findings. Work with RF, electronics and mechanical activities within your competence. Conduct system testing and fault finding. Perform soldering, crimping and light machining to fabricate and repair electronic circuit sub-assemblies and systems. Assist with the repair of components. Whilst this is not a shift-working position, the role may require displaced working hours and on-call support. About you: We are looking for a well-qualified, hands-on, self-motivated person who is keen to support your colleagues, but who can also manage your own tasks. Some experience of installation, commissioning and operation of complex, preferably high-power, amplifier systems is essential. We have one of the largest RF installations in Europe, with more than 150 high power amplifiers, over 400 electronics racks, solid state amplifiers, RF distribution, power supplies and auxiliary systems, interlock systems and controls. The operation of the ESS facility depends on highly reliable RF systems that must perform consistently around the clock. We are therefore looking for a focused and dedicated colleague who understands the need to work safely and to a very high level of quality. As a positive and proactive person, you are someone who demonstrates a willingness to learn and get involved.  We need someone with: Very good general mechanical, electrical, wiring and installation knowledge. Training and experience in electrical installation and electrical safety. The knowledge to read, understand and produce electrical schematics using EPLAN, AutoCAD or similar. Fault finding and troubleshooting abilities. Practical experience of working with electronic circuits, electronic racks, cabling and wiring. Experience of test and measurement procedures - including the use of multimeters, oscilloscopes and specialised test equipment. Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to be a true team player. The official working language of ESS is English, so we need someone who is comfortable with communicating in English on a daily basis.
