Subject description Building Materials includes sustainable building materials and their application technologies, recycling and reuse, and applied building physics, especially focusing on the Arctic conditions. Project description The production of Portland cement still cannot be qualified as an environmentally friendly process due to high CO2 emissions from burning fuels, calcination of limestone, and the negative effects of mining operations. Several solutions are being implemented worldwide, but none have provided an efficient solution. This project aims to study the possibility of substituting the high-temperature clinkering process with a cold synthesis based on mechanochemistry. Duties As a PhD student, you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research studies as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. The tasks will include laboratory tests, analysis of data, and modeling. Qualifications To be eligible, you must have a master’s degree in materials science or chemistry. Department of Molecular Sciences Third-cycle subject area: Chemistry Description of the doctoral project Do you want to work in a project that aims to replace fossil sources with forest raw materials for the production of biomaterials? Are you interested in immersing yourself in molecular interactions at the atomic level with advanced analytical instruments? Do you want to work with a whole group of researchers who share these interests? If so, this could be a PhD position for you. The overall goal of this PhD project is to enzymatically modify glycans from hemicellulose to produce bio-based crosslinkers for applications in adhesives, hydrogels and other crosslinked materials. However, many materials that we consider bio-based, such as wood fibreboards, hydrogels and stabilizers from non-fossil polymers, still rely on crosslinkers that have fossil origins and are often very harmful chemicals. Fibreboards for furniture, construction and insulation typically contain around 9% glue consisting of urea formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is classified as a known human carcinogen and its emissions from fibreboards are a major concern. Oxidative enzymes will be used on hemicellulose substrates, such as xyloglucan and glucomannan, to obtain aldehyde and ketone functions on the sugar ring in parallel with a partial degradation to oligosaccharides. The expected result is a collection of non-toxic, bio-based crosslinkers that can potentially replace formaldehyde and similar fossil-based crosslinkers. About the position You will be part of a research group conducting research in organic chemistry and biotechnology with a focus on structural analysis of enzymes and carbohydrate substrates using NMR spectroscopy, as well as the development of new methods for studying interactions between proteins and carbohydrates using NMR spectroscopy. The project includes a lot of laboratory work and will be carried out with an advanced level of characterization using NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to be able to draw conclusions about the structural composition of the crosslinkers and the crosslinked materials. To achieve these goals while ensuring a productive and enriching environment, the project includes supervision in organic chemistry, enzymology and wood technology. The position also includes teaching up to 20% of the time. Requirements To meet the general entry requirements you must have: been awarded a second-cycle (Master’s) qualification; satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad (Higher Education Ordinance 1993:100, Chapter 7, Section 39). The European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) invites applications for an instrument scientist for the dedicated Test beamline (TBL). The Diffraction and Imaging Division is home to the instrument scientists and instrument operational engineers responsible for designing, constructing, and operating the DREAM, MAGiC, BEER, HEIMDAL, ODIN, and TBL instruments at ESS. New designs for a wide range of neutron instruments are being implemented to fully leverage the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source. The primary purpose of TBL is characterizing the target-reflector-moderator system and verifying the performance of the neutron source based on operating parameters such as proton beam energy, stability, pulse length, and beam rastering, as well as the moderator conditions. An important aspect of this work will be comparing the measured and simulated neutronic performance of the moderator, providing a crucial reference for various neutron scattering instruments. Additionally, the TBL will contribute to optimizing instruments and methods to fully exploit the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source. The TBL will function as a local characterization station, supporting technical developments in areas such as neutron optics, polarization, and novel detectors. It is designed to support the user program by performing exploratory imaging experiments, neutron diffraction studies, and single-crystal alignment. Due to the flexibility of the instrument, a variety of detectors and sample environments can be fitted inside the experimental cave, allowing multipurpose measurements on not only thermal neutrons but also epithermal/fast neutrons and gamma rays. This includes but is not limited to a well-established technique such as time-of-flight transmission measurements, neutron tomography, neutron activation analysis, grating interferometry, etc. As the facility evolves, the modular design of the TBL will allow for modifications to meet new objectives, ensuring its continued relevance and utility in advancing neutron science. The construction of TBL is completed and the team prepares the instrument for the first neutrons. About the role: As the instrument scientist for TBL you will: Work closely with another scientist and the instrument operations engineer, forming the core instrument team. Lyten is now seeking Material Development Engineer. You will be responsible for technical activities related to the evaluation and analysis of Li battery cells and associated materials. The position focuses on supporting the development, optimization, and validation of materials and components to ensure reliable performance in both commercial and R&D cell projects. Key Responsibilities Conduct material characterization, electrochemical testing, and performance evaluation of Li battery cells and related components. Analyze test data to assess material behaviours, degradation mechanisms, and cell performance trends. Support design and process optimization efforts to improve cell performance, safety, and manufacturability. Perform failure analysis to identify root causes of performance deviations and propose corrective actions. Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including cell design, process, and quality groups—to ensure consistent material evaluation standards and test methodologies. Prepare technical documentation, data summaries, and reports to support engineering decisions and project reviews. Stay informed on advancements in Li battery materials, analysis techniques, and relevant industry standards. Execute assigned evaluation and analysis tasks in consultation with senior engineers and contribute to achieving project milestones. Qualifications and Experience BSc or MSc in Chemical/Material/Electrical Engineering, and Chemistry. Experience and good understanding in evaluation, testing, or analysis of Li battery cells or related materials. Proficiency in analytical and electrochemical testing methods (e.g., EIS, charge/discharge cycling, material characterization). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to data integrity and reproducibility. Effective communication and collaboration skills within a multidisciplinary R&D environment. Specific skills Hands-on experience with electrochemical testing (charge/discharge, EIS, CV). Proficiency in data analysis tools (Excel, Origin, Python preferred). Familiarity with material characterization techniques (XRD, SEM, ICP). Understanding of laboratory QA/QC principles. Ability to follow established test protocols with precision and consistency. MicroDri is a Swedish deep-tech company based in Linköping, developing next-generation industrial drying systems based on continuous microwave technology. The company’s technology enables materials to be dried faster, with greater control, and at lower energy consumption than conventional methods — addressing a key bottleneck in many energy-intensive industrial processes. The company originates from Swedish industrial innovation and was founded as a spin-off from Saab AB. Since its inception, MicroDri has built a strong technical platform within microwave technology, mechanical engineering, control systems, and industrial process development. About the Role As a Mechanical Engineer at MicroDri, you will play a key role representing mechanical design expertise within our technical team. You will work broadly and hands-on with development, mechanical design, prototyping, assembly, and testing. This role goes beyond traditional mechanical design. You will participate in early concept discussions, develop mechanical solutions, work closely with manufacturing and testing, and contribute to dialogues with external suppliers and partners. Over time, we see the role evolving into a broader responsibility for the mechanical engineering area, where you will coordinate design-related matters, supplier interactions, and technical decisions connected to mechanical development. We are looking for someone who understands what happens after a drawing leaves the screen — how components are manufactured, assembled, tested, and function in real-world conditions. The work is primarily carried out on-site in our workshop/facility, where you will be involved in both the construction and verification of our systems, as well as at our office in Linköping. We believe you have At least 6 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer Experience working with complex industrial product development A solid understanding of the entire development chain — from design to production and finished solution Experience working closely with manufacturing, workshops, or prototype building A practical and solution-oriented mindset The ability to work independently and take ownership within your area of expertise An interest in gradually taking on broader technical responsibility, for example within mechanical development, supplier dialogue, and technical coordination You need to have a broad technical understanding and feel comfortable taking responsibility in technical environments. You will work closely with our microwave experts, system/control specialists, and other parts of the development team.
