Department of Forest Ecology and Management Third-cycle subject area Biology Description of the doctoral project Nitrogen availability is a major constraint on plant growth and carbon sequestration in boreal forest soils. Although proteins constitute a large fraction of the soil nitrogen pool, the processes governing their breakdown into amino acids remain poorly understood. A critical knowledge gap lies in understanding the composition and properties of soil proteins and their role in regulating nitrogen cycling. This PhD project will address this challenge by characterizing soil protein composition and investigating the mechanisms that control nitrogen turnover. The doctoral candidate will primarily work in the laboratory, analysing natural soils from mesocosm and field experiments. Analytical work will be done in close collaboration with the Umeå Proteomics Platform. https://www.umu.se/en/research/infrastructure/umea-proteomics-platform/ The project is led by Sandra Jämtgård, Department of Forest Ecology and Management, SLU in collaboration with Maja Sundquist and Jonatan Klaminder. The doctoral candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary research team with expertise spanning plant ecophysiology, vegetation ecology, soil science and proteomics, which provides good conditions for scientific exchange and discussion. Join our team and drive service stability across our platform About the role As a Service Reliability Manager, you are responsible for ensuring the availability, stability, and operational reliability of our customer-facing services. You act as a central coordination point across Product, Development, Operations, customer-facing teams, and external partners. Your focus is to proactively prevent service disruptions, manage incidents effectively when they occur, and continuously improve how we work with reliability across the organization. You coordinate incident management, release readiness, and operational communication, ensuring the right stakeholders are involved at the right time. In the event of incidents, you take on a leading coordination role, creating clarity, structure, and momentum in situations where it matters most. You also monitor service performance through SLAs, SLOs, and operational metrics, identify risks related to dependencies, and drive improvements through follow-ups, root cause analysis, and close collaboration with teams across the business. This is a role for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of technology, operations, and communication — and who wants to build reliable services together with others, rather than owning them alone. About you We believe you are a structured and communicative professional who is comfortable taking ownership in complex and sometimes high-pressure situations. You enjoy bringing clarity when things are uncertain, and you build trust by coordinating people, processes, and information in a thoughtful and pragmatic way. To be successful in this role, we believe you have: At least 5 years of relevant experience in service reliability, incident management, operations, service delivery, or similar roles in a technical environment Experience coordinating cross-functional teams and working with both technical and business stakeholders A solid understanding of service availability, operational risk, production readiness, and continuous improvement Experience working with SLAs, SLOs, operational metrics, or similar frameworks Strong communication skills and the ability to create structure and clarity, especially during incidents or time-critical situations Fluent in English and Swedish, Dutch and/or Danish is a plus It’s a bonus if you have experience in roles such as Incident Coordinator, Service Delivery Manager, or similar, along with familiarity with ITIL, change management, release governance, or operational readiness practices. Experience with monitoring and observability tools, incident tooling, status pages, or coordinating external suppliers and partners is also a plus. As a person, you are collaborative, analytical, and comfortable making decisions when needed. You remain calm and focused under pressure, and you take a proactive approach to identifying risks and driving improvements. You enjoy working closely with others and contribute to a culture where reliability is a shared responsibility across teams. Department of Crop Production Ecology Biology with a specialisation in ecology - The Department of Crop Production Ecology is seeking a PhD student in plant breeding and plant protection against insect pests. Description: Chemical insecticides have been an important tool for limiting crop losses caused by insect pests and insect-borne viruses, but their availability has declined sharply in recent years. Crop varieties with resistance, tolerance or other traits that enable them to avoid insect damage and viruses spread by insects will therefore be a cornerstone of future integrated pest management. The vision for the new project 'Node for Plant Breeding against Insect Pests and Viruses' within the centre SLU Grogrund is to reduce crop losses caused by pests and insect-borne viruses through crop breeding. The project focuses on insect pests and viruses in wheat, field beans, peas and sugar beet and is a collaboration between five departments at SLU and three plant breeding companies. We are seeking a highly motivated individual for a PhD position within the Node, focusing on the broad bean beetle (Bruchus rufimanus), a key pest of field bean. Infestations by the broad bean beetle pose an obstacle to developing field bean cultivation and a market for field beans for human consumption. The PhD programme comprises both research and coursework. The main tasks within the research component will be: Examine the insect's life cycle in the field and in storage Develop methods for screening of broad bean beetle infestations in a large panel of plant breeding material Contributing to the development of DNA markers for resistance or tolerance to broan bean beetle, for future application in plant breeding You will collaborate on the project with other PhD students and senior researchers in plant breeding, crop production, entomology, virology and genetics, as well as with the industry and other stakeholders, primarily Lantmännen and NordGen. Laboratory and field work is planned to be carried out at both SLU's campuses in Uppsala and Alnarp, as well as at NordGen in Alnarp. Field work at other locations in Sweden may also be included. Qualifications: Necessary qualifications: A second-cycle (MSc) degree in agronomy, horticulture, plant breeding, plant biology or a related field. Experience of statistical analysis of data. Experience of work with plants or insects in the field or green house. Strong interest in crop protection and crop breeding. Good command of written and spoken English. Meriting qualifications: Knowledge or experience in crops and agriculture A driving licence valid for use in Sweden We place particular emphasis on personal qualities, including ability to work both independently and collaboratively, take initiative, manage complex tasks in a structured way, and contribute positively to a team environment across disciplines and countries. To be qualified to apply: To qualify for third-cycle (Doctoral) courses and study programmes, you must have a second-cycle (Master's) qualification. Alternatively, you must have conducted a minimum of four years of full-time study, of which a minimum of one year at second-cycle level. Applicants will be selected based on their written application and CV, degree project, copies of their degree certificate and transcript of records from previous first and second-cycle studies at a university or higher education institution, two personal references, and knowledge of English. More information about the English language requirements can be found here: https://www.slu.se/en/education/programmes-courses/doctoral-studies/application-admission-doctoral-studies/ Please note that applicants invited to interview must submit attested copies of their degree certificate, or equivalent, a transcript of records from previous first and second-cycle studies at a university or higher education institution.
