The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. It will provide researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. We are now looking for an Instrument Scientist for the HEIMDAL powder diffractometer. The position is with the Diffraction & Imaging Division. About the division The Diffraction & Imaging Division consists of the scientific staff that are leading the instrument construction projects and the staff that will eventually execute the day-to-day operations of six neutron instruments. The upcoming responsibilities of the division are Finalize the installation and commissioning of all instruments in the division Deliver state-of-the-art scientific capabilities for internal and external users to enable the wider science community to advance science and technology Deliver scientific results from the neutron instruments in collaboration with the user community and other divisions in the science directorate Plan and implement further developments and upgrades of the instruments Push the state-of-the-art capabilities of neutron instrumentation to make maximum benefit from the ESS source. Main Responsibilities HEIMDAL is a multiscale diffractometer that, in its full scope, will enable studies of functional materials across a wide range of length scales, from conventional powder diffraction to the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) regime (possible future upgrade). The construction of the diffractometer part of the instrument is ongoing and expected to be completed in 2027. The immediate mission is to finalize the installation of the instrument and take part in the commissioning of the instrument without and with neutrons. The instrument scientist will work closely with the core instrument team at ESS, comprising another instrument scientist, an instrument computational scientist, and an instrument operational engineer, and in strong interaction with partner institutions and ESS technical services. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science.   The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) invites applications for an instrument scientist for the dedicated Test beamline (TBL).   The Diffraction and Imaging Division is home to the instrument scientists and instrument operational engineers responsible for designing, constructing, and operating the DREAM, MAGiC, BEER, HEIMDAL, ODIN, and TBL instruments at ESS. New designs for a wide range of neutron instruments are being implemented to fully leverage the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source.   The primary purpose of TBL is characterizing the target-reflector-moderator system and verifying the performance of the neutron source based on operating parameters such as proton beam energy, stability, pulse length, and beam rastering, as well as the moderator conditions. An important aspect of this work will be comparing the measured and simulated neutronic performance of the moderator, providing a crucial reference for various neutron scattering instruments. Additionally, the TBL will contribute to optimizing instruments and methods to fully exploit the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source. The TBL will function as a local characterization station, supporting technical developments in areas such as neutron optics, polarization, and novel detectors. It is designed to support the user program by performing exploratory imaging experiments, neutron diffraction studies, and single-crystal alignment. Due to the flexibility of the instrument, a variety of detectors and sample environments can be fitted inside the experimental cave, allowing multipurpose measurements on not only thermal neutrons but also epithermal/fast neutrons and gamma rays. This includes but is not limited to a well-established technique such as time-of-flight transmission measurements, neutron tomography, neutron activation analysis, grating interferometry, etc. As the facility evolves, the modular design of the TBL will allow for modifications to meet new objectives, ensuring its continued relevance and utility in advancing neutron science. The construction of TBL is completed and the team prepares the instrument for the first neutrons.   About the role:  As the instrument scientist for TBL you will: Work closely with another scientist and the instrument operations engineer, forming the core instrument team. Participate in commissioning of the TBL beamline with neutrons. Develop a diagnostic plan for ESS Operation via the utilization of TBL Develop and implement new experimental methods using the TBL, including (but not limited to) spectroscopic imaging, diffractive imaging, polarized neutron imaging, grating interferometry, neutron depth profiling, prompt-gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA), and advanced sample environments, etc. Develop synergies with other neutron facilities and build links with universities.   The position is a 3-year fixed term role and the workplace will be situated in Lund, Sweden. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science.   About the role   Within the Science Directorate, the Scientific Support Division provides the ESS neutron science program with experimental support including sample environments, user laboratories, deuteration, and hall coordination in close collaboration with Instrument Divisions.   The Sample Environment group at ESS is preparing to support all ESS neutron instruments by developing, assembling and integrating a broad range of specialized equipment for achieving both very low and very high temperatures, high magnetic fields, high pressure, vacuum, gas or liquid flow, lasers, and in many cases, automated systems. Once ESS transitions into operations in early 2027, we will provide operational support for all sample environments on the instruments in close collaboration with scientists, as well as continuing the development of new sample environments. We are now seeking a Sample Environment Engineer to support the development, commissioning and the operations of high temperature furnaces, as well as related gas handling and pressurized gas systems. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering sample environment projects in these areas, working in close collaboration with other members of the Sample environment group as well as academic research groups to develop new equipment and provide operational support for early science experiments at ESS. As part of this role, you will specifically develop new sample environments in collaboration with the universities participating in the ESS Early Science Initiative project “Sustainable and functional materials from local resources” funded by the Swedish Research Council. Day-to-day, you will: Specify, design, develop and procure equipment for high temperature/gas handling and pressurized sample environment systems. Work with academic researchers to develop technical specifications and propose solutions and designs to meet scientific requirements. Assemble, integrate and commission sample environments and associated equipment. Install, operate, maintain and repair high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems and related equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams and academic user groups to establish specifications and priorities for new high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems. Provide operational sample environment support for the ESS instruments including on-call support. Provide expert experiment safety reviews for user proposals and carry out safety testing of user-supplied equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams, users, and sample environment groups at other large-scale facilities to further develop high temperature/gas handling/pressurized sample environment equipment and technologies. Participate in the setting-up, maintenance and operation of the sample environment workshops and facilities. This is a full-time, fixed-term position for around 3 years based at ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden. About you   You have up to an MSc level degree in an engineering subject (e.g. mechanical, materials or metallurgical engineering) with relevance to this position, which focuses on the development and practical realization of high temperature and pressurized gas handling systems for scientific measurements. Previous experience of design as well as hands-on work experience with high-temperature equipment and gas handling/pressurised gas systems is required. You also have previous experience of mechanical assembly, maintenance and repairs, as well as relevant knowledge of material behavior at high temperatures and hazards involved in pressurized gas systems.   Experience of developing scientific or technical equipment involving controlling or monitoring temperature, mass, gas pressure or other experimental parameters would be considered particularly beneficial for this role. Experience with additional techniques including vacuum welding, brazing, wiring, light sheet metal work, and tube bending is also regarded as a merit, as are basic machining skills. Knowledge of control systems and programming would be an advantage, but not a requirement. You are accustomed to working with scientists as well as technicians to define and deliver projects and support operating equipment. You take as much pride in designing engineering solutions to meet scientific requirements as providing hands-on practical solutions to equipment problems, and approach all tasks with a collaborative, service-oriented mind-set. Let us describe the challenge we offer We're currently looking for a Liquidity Manager to join our Treasury Operations & Liquidity Analysis team. In this role, you will be accountable for the overall cash flow health and liquidity position of both the Polestar Group and its individual legal entities. You will serve as the process owner for Group cash flow forecasting and reporting, ensuring transparency, accuracy, and actionable insights to support business decision-making. You will work closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to support liquidity management, cash flow analysis, and financial risk mitigation. What You'll Do The Liquidity Manager owns the end-to-end cash flow forecasting process, including governance, templates, reporting frameworks, and forecast quality. The position drives cash visibility, improves working capital efficiency, minimizes tied-up capital, and leads cross-functional actions to resolve liquidity challenges. Acting as the key partner and escalation point for Polestar Sales Units (PSUs), the Liquidity Manager ensures robust cash flow management practices and supports informed decision-making across the organization. Liquidity & Cash Flow Management * Own and manage the liquidity position of the Polestar Group and all legal entities within the Group. * Ensure sufficient liquidity is available to support operational, strategic, and funding requirements. * Monitor short-, medium-, and long-term cash positions and proactively identify liquidity risks and opportunities. * Drive actions to improve overall cash flow health and resilience across the organization. * Develop and maintain liquidity management frameworks, including funding, cash concentration, and cash optimization strategies. * Define control procedures to secure there is no liquidity issues for the Polestar Group and all legal entities within the Group. * Lead the resolution of complex cash flow issues that require coordination among headquarters functions, business functions, and Polestar Sales Units. * Facilitate cross-functional discussions to identify root causes, remove barriers, and drive accountability. * Ensure timely execution of agreed actions and achievement of targeted outcomes. Cash Flow Forecasting * Own the end-to-end direct cash flow forecasting process across the Group. * Be accountable for the quality, accuracy, consolidation, and timely delivery of Group direct cash flow forecasts. * Define, maintain, and continuously improve forecasting methodologies, templates, timelines, and governance frameworks. * Drive forecast accuracy through standardized processes, variance analysis, and challenge of underlying assumptions. * Partner with FP&A, Controlling, Accounting, Regional CFOs, the Shared Service Center, and other business functions to ensure reliable and actionable forecasts. * Act as the escalation point for Polestar Sales Units (PSUs) on cash flow forecasting-related matters, ensuring timely resolution and alignment. Strategic KPI Improvement Initiatives * Identify opportunities to improve cash flow, liquidity, forecast accuracy, and working capital performance. * Lead and deliver one-time initiatives to drive measurable improvements in key cash flow, and liquidity KPIs. * Analyze performance gaps, define action plans, and coordinate cross-functional stakeholders to ensure successful implementation. * Track, validate, and communicate the impact of initiatives against agreed targets and KPIs. * Challenge existing processes and drive continuous improvement through best practices in cash management and forecasting. * Act as a catalyst for continuous improvement by identifying and delivering targeted actions to address underperforming areas.
