ENGINEERING MANAGER - GOVERNMENT CLOUD We're hiring an Engineering Manager for a new Government Cloud product team. This new team will be responsible for building and operating product features and functionality related to: * Building and operating the AWS GovCloud environments that host Tines for Public Sector customers * Standing up support for highly secure, isolated, and air-gapped networks — our Government Cloud offering * Authentication and access methods required by federal agencies (e.g. smart card / CAC-PIV) * Audit logging, records retention, and in-product features that make audits, compliance validation, and evidence collection easier * Continuous monitoring, vulnerability management, and the documentation and evidence needed for FedRAMP and CMMC authorization * Acting as the escalation point for operational and compliance challenges across our government environments   As the Engineering Manager for this new team, your job is to help ensure Tines stays a great place to be an engineer. This role is about supporting your team, helping them be effective, growing our organization, and fostering a healthy team culture. LOCATION: You can work fully remotely from anywhere in the US with a preference for being based in the Greater Boston Area. Here, you can make use of our Tines office space in downtown Boston to meet up with other members of the MA engineering team when you wish.  Due to the nature of this role and associated U.S. Government customer requirements, applicants must be U.S. citizens and must perform work while located within the United States. WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING * Manage an engineering team of 3-6 infrastructure and software engineers responsible for the technical ownership of our Government Cloud offering. * Support the growth and development of engineers across all levels of experience through regular feedback, coaching and mentorship. * Work with colleagues across GTM, CS, and Security to plan and prioritize the projects that get us to authorization and keep us there, helping break them down into manageable tasks and milestones. * Facilitate useful communication between your team, other Product & Engineering teams, and other departments at Tines, acting as a key stakeholder in product features beneficial to our Public Sector customers. * Enable your team to act as the ultimate point of escalation for technical issues in our government environments, including directly engaging with Public Sector prospects and customers where necessary. * Contribute to technical discussions, while preserving autonomy for engineers. * Help make our engineering processes effective and efficient, including the change control and review practices a compliance-regulated environment depends on. * Work on attracting and recruiting great engineers to our team. * Foster a culture of inclusion, ambition, and collaboration. * Maintain technical familiarity through direct work on smaller, lower-priority engineering tasks. PROJECTS YOU MIGHT WORK ON * Designing the infrastructure-as-code library for GovCloud customer provisioning — a repeatable process to stand up an isolated environment with all required AWS services pre-configured with FedRAMP-required encryption and logging. * Building the CI/CD pipeline that promotes container images from development through staging to GovCloud production, with vulnerability scanning gates and change control documentation baked into the workflow. * Creating operational runbooks for customer provisioning, incident response, patching, and disaster recovery that satisfy our assessment requirements. * Setting up monitoring dashboards and alarms that feed into a Tines tenant for automated incident triage — using our own product to operate our government infrastructure. * Building IAM structures and permission boundaries that let engineers deploy and debug in production while maintaining least-privilege access required for compliance. * Monitoring, scaling, and operating data services like OpenSearch in production — managing indexes and retention, tuning for performance, and building in-product tooling that surfaces cluster health and observability to the team. * Collaborating with our Product and Design teams to enable compliance-specific product features like smart card authentication and DNS security extensions. * Writing documentation that helps the broader engineering team understand how to build and test features in a compliance-regulated environment.   IS THIS THE RIGHT ROLE FOR YOU? * Experience in an engineering management or team lead role; ideally at a SaaS company. This role requires some previous people management experience. * Experience building or operating in compliance-regulated, government, or security-sensitive environments. You don't need to be a FedRAMP expert, but context for frameworks like FedRAMP or CMMC — where every design decision has to be documented, justified, and auditable — will be key to supporting your team. * Experience with AWS GovCloud or Azure Government is highly desired, as is familiarity with deploying into air-gapped or otherwise restricted networks. * A strong track record as a software, infrastructure, or systems engineer. We don't expect managers to make significant code contributions, but technical experience and context will be key to supporting our engineers and weighing in on technical decisions. We view technologies as a means to an end, and stick to simple, common tools - Ruby, Rails, React, TypeScript, Postgres, Redis, Docker, AWS, and AWS CDK. Our main languages are Ruby and TypeScript, but you don't have to be familiar with those - we value curiosity and an eagerness to learn. * Engineer productivity is hugely important to us. We invest heavily in developer experience and care deeply about things like build times and flakey tests. We’re constantly evaluating and refining our use of LLMs to make us more effective in building our product.  * Your abilities matter, not your education. SENIOR SITE RELIABILITY ENGINEER - GOVERNMENT CLOUD You'll join the team responsible for building and operating the AWS GovCloud environment that brings Tines to federal customers, alongside owning the supporting services and tooling that our government and self-hosted customers rely on. Your focus will be making this environment as repeatable, observable, and assessment-ready as possible, from foundational infrastructure through to the day-to-day operations that keep it healthy. Direct experience with AWS GovCloud is a strong plus, but deep AWS fluency with a willingness to navigate GovCloud's constraints is what matters most. * You have hands-on experience designing VPC architectures, configuring encryption at rest and in transit, and operating AWS native compute, database, and caching services in production under real workloads. * You've worked with infrastructure-as-code like CDK or Terraform in FedRAMP or CMMC environments, preferably supporting a customer-facing SaaS product. You'll be writing and maintaining the constructs that provision dedicated customer environments, so reusable IaC patterns for multi-account deployments are exactly the kind of thinking we need. * You understand what it takes to operate in a compliance-regulated environment. FedRAMP, FISMA, or similar experience is valuable — not because we need someone who's memorized NIST 800-53, but because you know what it means to build infrastructure where every design decision has to be documented, justified, and auditable. * You're comfortable with container image pipelines and hardening. You should be able to reason about base image provenance, vulnerability scanning, and what "hardened" actually means in practice. * You have good instincts for the boundary between "locked down for compliance" and "usable by engineering." A big part of this role is designing an environment where networking, certificates, and logging are restricted for compliance controls, while our engineering team can still deploy code, provision new customers, and respond to incidents without filing a ticket for every action. * You can write clearly. This role involves producing tech plans, runbooks, and operational documentation that will be reviewed during our FedRAMP assessment. If you've sat through a compliance assessment before and know how to answer assessor questions with evidence, that's a real advantage. * This role is broad, not specialized. While your main focus will be on our government cloud deployment, you'll work across our stack. You don't need expertise in every area, but you should be comfortable learning new technologies with the support of your teammates. We use Ruby, Rails, React, TypeScript, Postgres, Redis, and Kubernetes.
