This role demands more than standard simulation engineering. Working in defence technology means operating close to the realities
of modern conflict and building simulation environments that must reliably support development, validation, and mission
preparation in demanding conditions.

The work will be embedded in the SFI - SAINT project Sustainable, Applied and Industrialized Nuclear Technology, which supports the launch of 2-3 nuclear powered demonstration ships in the early 2030s. Within the SAINT project, you will work in Work Package 3 – From heat to propulsion. The shipping industry accounts for roughly 3% of global CO₂ emissions, and with international pressure to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, nuclear propulsion is emerging as a serious candidate for deep-sea and high-utilization vessels where battery or hydrogen solutions face fundamental range and energy density constraints. Steam turbines are already in use in commercial ships today, based on fossil fuels. This research project will investigate how to integrate steam turbines, thermal and electrical energy storages, and a nuclear reactor in an energy efficient and operational reliable energy system for various ship types. As a Post Doc (PD), you will work closely with other members of the project, both industry partners, PhD candidates and other researchers in the project on a daily basis. You will also be a part of the PD/PhD community at our institute, counting around 40 candidates at present, who work on other projects but on topics related to yours. Your work will be to investigate the present applications of steam turbines in shipping, identify critical criteria for integration and operation, and develop a model for simulation of the energy system. This includes normal operations, ramping, transit vs. port stay, and maintenance requirements. The aim of the work is to use this tool to size the reactor (output heat), steam turbine, energy storages, and other components of the propulsion system for three specified use cases: a tanker, an offshore vessel, and a floating nuclear power plant. About the project Naval vessels and polar icebreakers have operated on nuclear power for decades. Nuclear propulsion is emerging as a serious candidate for decarbonization of deep-sea and high-utilization vessels in Norway and internationally, offering greater energy independence, higher sustained speeds, and extended range compared to conventional fuel-based propulsion. International bodies are actively establishing the frameworks that will govern the civil use of nuclear propulsion and the foundational engineering knowledge is being established right now. SAINT - Sustainable, Applied and Industrialized Nuclear Technology - is a research project investigating the use of nuclear propulsion for commercial and specialist maritime vessels and aims at launching 2-3 demonstration ships in the early 2030s. SAINT addresses the technical, safety, and operational challenges that must be resolved before such systems can be responsibly deployed. PhD and Post Doc candidates will be among the people shaping this emergent field. In the intersection of nuclear and maritime engineering qualified engineers and researchers are scarce globally. Candidates who complete a PhD within the SAINT project will be well positioned for careers in nuclear safety, maritime regulation, advanced vessel design, and the emerging commercial nuclear sector. The project is hosted at the Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering (IHB) at NTNU in Ålesund, a campus with deep roots in maritime engineering and ship design. Around 70 PhD students are at NTNU in Ålesund, roughly 40 of which are in IHB working on ship design, naval control systems and in shipping management. Within the project we are aiming to recruit up to ten PhD students and one or two Post Docs to work in parallel across the core engineering challenges of maritime nuclear propulsion, creating an unusually dense and collaborative internal research environment in which you will collaborate with researchers working across nuclear engineering, naval architecture, electrical power systems, and maritime operations. Moreover, a ship design company rarely works with just one ship. It works with an idea of a ship, designs that get evolved, customised, and built each time differently. At any moment, different instances of that idea exist side by side: some still on the drawing board, some under construction, others already operating and sending back streams of sensor data from daily operation. The knowledge that connects these instances, and that connects design, construction, and operation more broadly, rarely lives in one coherent place. It is scattered across documents, tools, and people, out of reach of the AI methods that could otherwise make efficient use of it. This PhD position aims to investigate how such knowledge could be represented so it holds together across many instances and lifecycle phases of a ship, and becomes something AI methods, not only engineers, can work with directly. This includes examining how components, systems, and the dependencies between them might be captured in a shared structure, and comparing candidate approaches, such as ontologies, knowledge graphs, graph databases, or multi taxonomy databases, and the AI techniques needed to build and query them, to see where each fits, where each falls short, and whether a hybrid solution serves better. A good representation should not only describe a vessel as it is, but support AI-assisted inference: surfacing what else is affected by a change, what may be missing from an incomplete design, or what the likely consequences are elsewhere in the vessel. Whether such a representation should fit existing practices and tools, or justify changing them, is itself an open question, to be weighed against the time and value it can bring to the industry. Part of the motivation is that design and operational data, gathered across many vessels and many projects, could form one coherent body of knowledge that AI methods can search and learn from, helping surface relevant precedent and consequences for new designs rather than starting each one from scattered documents and individual experience. Turning that possibility into something concrete is part of the candidate's task, who will narrow this broad research space toward specific applications and evaluate them against real design tasks. The work is carried out in close, ongoing cooperation with the local maritime industry, grounded in real vessels, real data, and real engineering problems. About the project The PhD project will be part of the Norwegian Maritime AI Center that aims to accelerate operationalization of AI in the maritime value chains. The center shall position the maritime sector for accelerated and successful use of AI. The demand for safe and sustainable maritime activities, as well as the shortage of crew and engineers, are key drivers for change in the maritime sector. At the same time, there is a pull for growth, increased efficiency and profitability, while managing volatility in the markets. Moreover, the sector is critically important for global supply chains and security in a tense geopolitical situation. To demonstrate and prototype maritime AI solutions, the center will address a diverse and impactful set of use cases: Logistics, shipping and business transactions; Ship design and construction; Voyage planning and optimization; Condition monitoring and maintenance; Crew training; Maritime traffic and ship surveillance; Decarbonization and energy management; Autonomous ships and remote control. Mirai is building the first AI‑driven autonomy platform for vessels under 100 ft, combining advanced robotics, sensor fusion, and onboard intelligence to make every boat autonomous, safer, and dramatically easier to operate. Beyond enabling crewed vessels, Mirai also develops next‑generation Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs) — uncrewed platforms designed for exploration, utility missions, and operational support — all powered by the same Operating System and multi‑layer autonomy framework. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated rapid integration and test robotic engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for integrating hardware and software systems onto unmanned vehicles, and working closely with cross-functional teams to rapidly prototype, validate and iterate on end‑to‑end autonomy solutions — transforming early concepts into reliable, field‑ready robotic systems. You will work at the intersection of robotics, AI software, hardware integration and field testing, contributing to the development and integration of Mirai’s autonomy stack across prototype platforms. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Robotics & Autonomy Development * Contribute to perception, planning and control modules using ROS2, Isaac ROS, PyTorch and NVIDIA simulation tools. * Help design, implement and test reinforcement-learning models and autonomy behaviours in simulation and real platforms. Hardware & Systems Integration * Lead the design, construction, and testing of UAS prototypes, efficiently transforming concepts into functional early-stage products. * Integrate hardware components onto unmanned vehicles, including sensors, actuators, and control systems. * Integrate electronic components and ensure seamless communication between hardware and software systems. * Integrate and validate multi-sensor stacks (LiDAR, radar, vision, GNSS, IMU). * Assemble and bring-up hardware prototypes, including compute units, power systems, actuators and electronic components. * Support development of Mirai’s sensor-fusion hardware platform. Prototyping & Field Testing * Lead/support rapid prototyping for autonomous vessel configurations. * Conduct feasibility studies, simulations, and performance evaluations to optimize hardware designs. * Develop and execute test plans to validate hardware functionality and reliability. * Identify and troubleshoot hardware issues, implementing effective solutions. Cross-Functional Collaboration * Work with mechanical, systems and software teams to align design, simulation and field results. * Contribute to documentation and integration processes. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS * Being a nerd who actually wants to build robots — someone who loves to tinker, solder, tune, prototype, break things, fix them again, and thrive in the delightful mess of real hardware. * Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution. * EU passport (or unrestricted right to work in Italy) and availability to work primarily on-site in Puglia (Bari area), with regular presence in lab, workshop and dock environments. * Hands-on skills with robotics hardware, sensor integration and embedded systems. * Knowledge of software development practices and programming languages pertinent to autonomy and robotics (e.g., Python, C++, ROS). * Experience with ROS2, PX4/ArduPilot or similar autopilot stacks. * Experience with rapid prototyping (3D printing, mechanical assembly, electronics bring-up). * Ability to diagnose integration problems. * Comfort with field testing and on-water prototyping. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Experience with UAV/UAS integration or multi-sensor robotic systems. * Familiarity with Pixhawk, vehicle control systems or maritime autonomy. * Exposure to NVIDIA Jetson, Isaac Sim, RL or perception pipelines. * Knowledge of control theory or real-time robotics. * Experience operating drones, small vessels or unmanned systems.
