The role:  As a Staff Software Engineer, Backend, you will lead multi-team initiatives, leveraging your deep technical expertise to ensure alignment, quality, and long-term maintainability across the organization. You will balance hands-on technical guidance with strategic leadership, establishing engineering best practices that transcend your immediate team. By mentoring experienced engineers and building strong relationships with cross-functional stakeholders, you will drive project delivery and ensure our backend infrastructure remains scalable and robust enough to support millions of users worldwide What you will do * Lead the team to ensure we build our product efficiently and effectively. * Influence product priorities and scope, offering valuable input in decision-making. * Communicate complex decisions clearly, weighing the pros and cons of different solutions. * Mentor and guide experienced engineers, helping them develop both technically and culturally. * Leverage your experience to establish best practices across the engineering team and beyond. * Drive project delivery by aligning with cross-functional stakeholders and ensuring the team has everything needed. * Lead multi-team initiatives, contributing with technical expertise, ensuring alignment and quality. * Own the quality of the systems and services the team is responsible for. * Be hands-on, balancing strategic leadership with technical guidance to support the team. * Stay up-to-date with industry trends and technologies, ensuring the team works with the best tools available. * Build strong relationships and align efforts within the team and with external partners when necessary. * Help with recruitment by interviewing candidates What you bring in * Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent  * 8+ years of relevant experience with Scala, Java, or Go  * Experience of working with scalable, highly available, real-time distributed systems * Experience of working with relational and non-relational databases * Good understanding of data structures and algorithms * Mentoring, leadership skills * Excellent communication skills in English. * Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. * Experience with security best practices. It would be great if you also have: * Experience as a data engineer or close collaboration with data engineers. * Experience working with highly available systems. * Experience with performance tuning. * Experience with security hardening. * Experience with GDPR. * Experience creating tech strategies. Responsibilities: * System Design & Development: Build and maintain scalable, reliable backend or fullstack systems and APIs that power Plaid’s products. * Collaboration: Work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define and deliver features that solve real customer problems. * Code Quality: Write clean, efficient, and well-tested code. Participate in reviews to maintain high engineering standards. * Testing & Debugging: Build automated tests, monitor system performance, and troubleshoot issues in production environments. * Continuous Improvement: Contribute to technical design discussions, share best practices, and help improve how we build at Plaid. Qualifications: * 1-4 years of software engineering experience (post-internship). * Proven ability to ship reliable systems or features at scale. * Strong problem-solving skills.
