This role will report to the Engineering Manager and will work closely with Product Managers, QA Engineers and other cross-functional teams. The Engineering team collaborates regularly with the DevOps and Data teams to deliver cohesive and cutting-edge payment solutions. At Modulr we are focused on building autonomous squads that are committed to working in the best possible way. We operate in a tribes and squad model with, each area focused on a particular growth area and each squad being small and cross-functional. We have big ambitions and have many interesting challenges ahead. Our strategy is to provide our customers with seamless connectivity into payment schemes both domestically and overseas no matter where they're based. The Role The Lead Engineer is a vital role within Modulr, where you will be responsible for building an autonomous, high performing squad to foster an environment where decisions are delegated, made and communicated effectively. You will actively work to create focused environments for your squad and you will work closely with our Engineering Managers to communicate progress and achievements. The role is a blend of technical leadership, process improvement and operational excellence. Key Responsibilities •Manage a squad of approximately 3-4 software engineers, leading people development activity through team meetings. •Squad planning and delegation to ensure the team have clearly defined responsibilities and are set up for success with delivery/project work •Facilitate and lead agile ceremonies (stand-ups, sprint planning, reviews and retros) to promote a culture of continuous improvement •Set and track individual/team performance goals, providing direction, feedback and recognition to foster growth and high performance •Promoting high standards of code quality through code reviews, technical direction and implementing best practice. •Play a key role in the hiring process, including interviewing, candidate assessments; representing Modulr’s mission, strategy, and culture throughout the process. •Foster a culture of experimentation within the squad to facilitate continuous learning and improvement across engineering standards, tooling and processes. •Regular reporting on the squad's progress, outcomes and achievements to the wider Engineering organisation, actively sharing knowledge and experiences within the org to promote cross-team learning and collaboration. •Proactively identify and address issues, bottlenecks and areas for increased efficiency and effectiveness About You A successful Squad Lead will have a track-record in delivering results in a fast-moving business and hence be comfortable with change and ambiguity. Excellent stakeholder management experience is essential to being successful in this role. The Ideal Candidate •Expertise in Java (or similar object-orientated languages with a willingness to learn Java) and experience with open-source technologies, including Spring and Hibernate. •Experience in designing, building and maintaining RESTful APIs. •Demonstrated ability to work with Microservices architecture. •Strong understanding of cloud computing and AWS systems and frameworks •Previous experience in designing, optimizing, and managing relational databases, particularly with PostgreSQL •Proven knowledge of DevOps practices and processes (including CI/CD and (IaC), with the ability to streamline development processes and enhance operational efficiency •Strong understanding of testing methodologies (TDD & BDD) including unit, integration and acceptance testing •Previous experience managing/mentoring multi-site technical teams in an agile environment. •Proven experience in software development and technical team leadership, with a strong understanding of engineering practices and processes. •Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in managing code reviews, conducting performance reviews and providing feedback. •As a strong problem-solver, you have the ability to apply analytical, critical thinking to identify key solutions. Summary In this role you will design, build, and evolve the next generation of Modulr’s event-driven payments platform. You’ll work across the full engineering lifecycle—from shaping technical approaches to delivering production-grade software—within a squad that values ownership, excellence, and continuous improvement. Specific duties Engineering & Architecture •Design and develop backend services using Java (17+) or similar OO languages. •Build and evolve microservices and distributed, event-driven components in a cloud-native environment. •Contribute to architectural patterns that support throughput, resilience, reliability, and observability. •Design clean, well-documented RESTful APIs and service contracts. •Work with relational data stores, especially PostgreSQL, and contribute to data modelling. Distributed Systems & Reliability •Engineer solutions for concurrency, idempotency, fault tolerance, retries, and high availability. •Improve system performance, reduce latency, and identify bottlenecks across services. •Build systems with strong observability—logs, metrics, tracing—ensuring issues can be diagnosed quickly. Quality & Testing •Develop comprehensive automated tests using frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, Cucumber. •Participate in design and code reviews, helping raise engineering standards across the team. •Advocate for code quality, maintainability, and long-term technical health. DevOps, Cloud & Tooling •Use and improve deployment pipelines and operational tooling (Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, AWS services). •Contribute to internal frameworks, shared libraries, and engineering best practices. •Help shape the evolution of our platform toward a more flexible, modern architecture. Staff Integration Engineer (Backend & Architecture) About the Role This is a senior/lead role and a critical opportunity to anchor our newly formed internal Integrations team. You will design, architect, and govern the resilient backend services that connect the Showpad platform with leading SaaS ecosystems. You will be the primary technical gatekeeper, ensuring all backend architectures meet our stringent enterprise standards for security, scalability, and observability. Key Responsibilities * Architectural Leadership: Author and submit Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) for all new integrations, ensuring alignment with event-driven, asynchronous models. * Backend Engineering: Develop isolated, decoupled microservices strictly utilizing TypeScript and Go. * Cloud Infrastructure: Provision resources exclusively using AWS CDK (Infrastructure as Code) across multi-region environments. Implement and manage DynamoDB and Amazon Aurora RDS databases. * Resiliency & Eventing: Build highly idempotent outbound APIs with exponential backoff algorithms. Architect strictly asynchronous webhook ingestion pipelines using AWS EventBridge and SQS. * Enterprise Observability: Instrument rich telemetry using OpenTelemetry standards. Design and deploy Datadog Out-of-the-Box (OOTB) dashboards to monitor crucial Service Level Indicators (SLIs) like availability, latency, and throughput. * Security & Compliance: Ensure all services strictly enforce tenant isolation, align with GDPR data minimization strategies, and adhere to SOC 2 Type II cryptographic standards. * Operational Readiness: Guide the team through strict Operational Readiness Reviews (ORR) and ensure all CI/CD quality gates are successfully navigated prior to production releases. About You * You have a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Software Engineering, plus 6+ years of software engineering experience. * You possess deep expertise in TypeScript and Go. * You have extensive experience with AWS, specifically serverless architectures, CDK, EventBridge, SQS, and Secrets Manager. * You are an expert in designing decoupled, event-driven architectures and understand the critical trade-offs of distributed systems. * You are highly proficient in application observability (Datadog, OpenTelemetry, structured logging, distributed tracing). * You have working knowledge of utilizing AI-first coding assistants.
