We have an exciting opening for drainage modeller to help us deliver on our expanding portfolio of UK and international research and consultancy projects. Current projects within the Catchments and Drainage team include: * Modelling the impacts of retrofitting Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) in cities in Europe and the Caribbean as part of climate resilient planning strategies; * Evaluating impacts of Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) spills and urban runoff discharges; * Governance of water company modelling and asset delivery strategies; * Modelling and master planning drainage asset portfolios; * Developing climate-adjusted rainfall time series and risk-based approaches to drainage design for flood and spill risk mitigation; * Creating tools for the planning, evaluation and design of SuDS; * Creating digital AI modelling solutions and applications; * Developing industry good practice guidance.   The team sits within the wider Flood and Water Management Group. Across this Group, we have a wide variety of experts including in water resources, flood risk systems analyses, flood forecasting, international climate adaptation and resilience, statistical modelling, data visualisation and management, and the use of earth observation data.  Our work cuts across regulatory, government and private sector consultancy and research sectors – both in the UK and internationally, and we are continuously generating new knowledge, skills and tools through our ongoing programme of internally-funded research. Within your role, you would be interacting and developing solutions with staff in all of these fields, in order to win and deliver projects and support clients across the Group.  The Group are recognised for our innovation.  We won the ‘Digital Excellence’ category at the Environment Agency’s Flood and Coast Excellence Awards 2024 with our Resilience and Innovation Northants (RAIN) platform for Northamptonshire Council (Home Page - RAIN). Our Intelligent Dam Safety Monitoring (DAMSAT) project won two awards at the New Civil Engineer Techfest Awards and  our Dengue forecasting MOdel Satellite-based System (D-MOSS) has won 9 different industry awards. We have recently been successful in securing Ofwat Innovation Funding for a national SuDS platform (with Southern Water) and for developing a Rainwater Management Platform (with Wessex Water).  We were also one of the ten finalists for the Manchester Prize for which we were funded to develop an AI sewer spill water quality impact tool. About the role We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual with existing demonstrable drainage modelling expertise and skills in data analysis who can help us with the development of new ideas and solutions, alongside providing robust established support to our clients. About you You will have at least a years’ surface water and/or wastewater drainage modelling experience (using InfoWorks ICM or equivalent) and ideally also have expertise in GIS and coding to help present and solve complex, data-intensive problems. You will have good understanding of risks and solutions relating to urban runoff. Importantly, you will be a team player. You will have a minimum professional qualification of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and have studied mathematics to A’level (or equivalent). This position involves active participation in coordination with review agencies and clients. The ideal candidate will be expected to develop and demonstrate proficiency in the essential functions outlined below. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Collaborate with project team members and clients on various project assignments as directed by senior staff. Draft, review, and finalize preliminary and final site plans, documents, and computations for senior staff review. This includes, but is not limited to, reports, opinions, and recommendations on project direction, due diligence and site analysis reports, engineer’s opinions of probable costs, project schedules, utility design computations, and local/state permit applications. • Research local/state zoning and design requirements as directed by senior staff. • Perform site visits and field assignments as needed. • Review project survey data to assess existing site conditions and key development considerations, including legal descriptions, ALTA surveys, and easement documents. • Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D and related engineering software to complete assignments efficiently and within prescribed deadlines, ensuring compliance with the standards outlined in the Atwell Product Quality Manual. • Address review letters and modify plans based on feedback from agencies and clients, as directed by senior staff. • Assist senior staff in communication with agencies and clients. • Independently manage individual workload and communicate needs to Project Managers and Directors. • Apply fundamental engineering principles to real-world applications. KEY COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS • AutoCAD Civil 3D: Proficient in the use of basic functions, file structure, data references, and advanced grading and pipe network design tools for the preparation of technical drawings. • Bluebeam: Skilled in using basic tools, markups, and Studio Sessions to support QA/QC and enhance collaborative project reviews. • Microsoft Office Suite: Proficient in Excel for data analysis and Word for professional reports and project documentation. • Grading/Drainage Design: Knowledgeable in site grading design to ensure public safety, constructability, and compliance with standard engineering practices and agency requirements. • Utility Design: Understanding of water, sanitary, and storm sewer system design to ensure constructability and compliance with standard engineering practices and agency requirements. • Quantity Takeoffs: Accuracy in quantity takeoffs and cost estimation for effective project budgeting and financial planning. • Zoning and Design Standards: Ability to navigate zoning laws and design standards to ensure plan compliance with local and state regulations. • ADA Compliance: Knowledge of federal accessibility regulations to create inclusive public and private infrastructure designs. • Entitlement Process: Understanding of regulatory approval processes and permitting requirements to achieve client goals effectively and in a timely manner. • Construction and Permitting: Ensuring design accuracy prior to construction and conducting field reviews during construction to minimize errors, delays, and rework. • Shop Drawing Review: Verifying that materials and components align with project designs and specifications. • Communication Skills: Ability to analyze client needs, tailor technical information to diverse audiences, and write technical reports documenting project progress and findings. • Professional Competency: Collaborating with team members, resolving conflicts, managing time effectively, prioritizing tasks, and conducting critical thinking and risk assessment.
