About the role
The Commercial Business Development Manager – Part Loads is responsible for developing and growing DFDS's UK and Nordic Part Load
and Groupage business, with a particular focus on UK export traffic. The role will identify and secure new customers, expand
existing business relationships, and position DFDS as a preferred logistics partner for part load, groupage, and consolidated
freight solutions. Extensive travel across the UK is an essential requirement of this role, with regular customer visits,
networking, and on-site business development activities forming a key part of the position.
Working as part of the Commercial team, the role will drive profitable revenue growth through proactive business development,
market analysis, customer engagement, and close collaboration with operational and account management teams. The position is
critical to delivering DFDS's strategic ambition to grow its Part Load and Groupage offering and diversify freight volumes across
the network.
About you
You'll have experience in business development, sales, freight forwarding, logistics, or transport services and a strong
understanding of Part Load, Groupage, or consolidated freight solutions. You'll be commercially focused with excellent
relationship‑building and negotiation skills, able to work independently while collaborating across multiple departments.
Knowledge of Nordic freight markets, customs procedures, or multimodal logistics would be highly beneficial. A full UK driving
licence is essential, as regular travel throughout the UK forms a key part of the role.

About the role As Commercial Director, you will be accountable for the commercial performance and strategic growth of DFDS Logistics across Immingham and the Midlands region. Leading a dedicated sales team, you will develop and execute the regional commercial strategy, driving sustainable revenue growth, margin improvement, and long-term customer retention across road, trailer, multimodal, and integrated logistics services. A strong understanding of European road freight, trailer operations, and multimodal logistics is essential, alongside excellent financial and commercial acumen. Experience selling trailer and logistics solutions into Nordic markets would be advantageous. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB As a Business Developer, you will join an established team of commercial and technical experts working with clients in the energy and industrial sectors. You will own the commercial responsibility for developing relationships, both new and existing with the broad range of clients that Cambridge Consultants serves, from multinational blue-chip companies to ambitious well-funded startups. This role has significant client contact, and you will use your knowledge, experience and network to engage with potential clients to find and drive opportunities where we can add disproportionate value to our clients and create and bring to market disruptive innovation. You will define work programmes and develop the commercial approach to bids, ideally working “ahead of the RFP” where relevant to influence the innovation direction of bids. The brief is international though expected to initially focus in the UK. You will be able to work on your own initiative and develop your own line of business. Developing key client relationships and repeat business built on trust is the cornerstone of our commercial approach and your responsibilities will include an important element of client management during project delivery. RESPONSIBILITIES * As part of the commercial team in the Energy and Industrial Business Unit, you will work collaboratively to identify, engage and onboard new clients in the Energy and Industrial sector. * Initial focus areas will be in climate tech (typically targeting technology disruptors) and in industrial automation (targeting end user clients alongside tech disruptors). * Working with the sector leads, develop and own and execute engagement plans to onboard new clients and develop strong relationships with key individuals within client and potential client organisations to enable further sales opportunities * Work collaboratively with our technical teams throughout the client journey * Interact with teams across the whole of Cambridge Consultants to develop the best technology solutions to our clients to solve their problems or maximise their opportunities for market gain * Build and maintain a deep domain knowledge * Build business opportunities globally, predominantly in Europe but open to engaging in wider regions (North America or Asia-Pacific). You will also use your strong technical skills to communicate what Cambridge Consultants can deliver to potential clients. Your background skills will also help you to make a significant contribution to the overall direction of development projects, often working on multiple projects at a time. Our technical team is based in Cambridge, UK although there will also be frequent travel to conferences, events and clients sites. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Your career will likely have included experience in an R&D or design role. You will have responsibility for developing the commercial side of projects within the Energy and Industrial sectors and you will possess detailed domain knowledge. Previous experience of working in a consultancy, technology disruptor to the sector or other ‘fee for service’ organisation would be an advantage. Ideally you will have a successful track record of building business to deliver technical solutions / services in the sector and will have experience developing innovative development work for specific client needs. To meet the requirements of this role you will have: * An excellent degree in a technical or science discipline is an advantage. * A passion for innovative technology solutions and for solving complex problems. * Comfortable with uncertainty and the ability to derive opportunity from ambiguous starting points. * A commercial understanding of what’s valuable to our clients. * Experience working with clients in the sector selling the type of highly innovative work we do at Cambridge Consultants (see below for a description).
