Context The Diffraction Group at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, in collaboration with the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), has an immediate opening for a two-year postdoctoral position funded through the Spanish Scientific Member agreement. The project focuses on emergent phenomena in transition metal oxides exhibiting unconventional frustrated magnetic and quantum phases. The materials under study include non-collinear magnets, such as complex ferrites with chiral states of remarkable stability, and frustrated negative charge-transfer oxides with hidden symmetries. The aim is to advance the design, understanding, and control of emergent states in quantum materials with non-collinear magnetism and symmetry-protected properties of interest for magnetoelectric and spin-lattice-driven applications. The research relies primarily on neutron techniques, with emphasis on single-crystal neutron diffraction and the exploitation of polarized neutrons and polarization analysis. Complementary techniques based on resonant X-ray scattering (RMXS/RIXS) are also of interest. Based at ILL, the position offers the opportunity to interact with a diverse community of scientists across European neutron, synchrotron, and FEL sources, and to carry out research stays of varying duration in the two partner laboratories in Barcelona (ICMAB) and Madrid (UCM). It is an interdisciplinary role bridging chemistry, solid state physics, and advanced characterization using quantum beams. Your tasks The successful applicant will be expected to: . Contribute to the synthesis, preparation, and advanced characterization of functional materials, with a primary focus on neutron scattering (single-crystal and powder diffraction), complemented by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy when relevant. . Design, prepare, and submit competitive beamtime proposals at large-scale facilities, primarily neutron sources, while also considering complementary experiments at synchrotron and other scattering facilities. . Actively collaborate with partner institutions, including Spanish national laboratories and academic partners, contributing to joint experimental campaigns, data analysis, and scientific discussions. . Perform data reduction, analysis, and interpretation using state-of-the-art software tools, ensuring high- quality and reproducible results. . Disseminate research outcomes through high-impact publications and presentations at national and international conferences, workshops, and meetings. . Travel to Spanish national laboratories and other European neutron and synchrotron sources to complement the work conducted in Grenoble. Your profile . PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related field. . Strong track record in the fields of magnetism and electronic properties. . Experience in neutron and synchrotron diffraction, preferably on single crystals. . Expertise in state-of-the-art materials synthesis and single-crystal growth techniques would be an asset. . Experience in interdisciplinary research collaboration would be an asset. What we offer Quality of life - This position is based in Grenoble, a hub for research and technology, ideally located in the heart of the French Alps (just 3 hours from Paris/Provence by train, 1 hour from Lyon international airport and 1 ½ hours from Geneva). Do you want to explore the future of nanoelectronics and develop next-generation devices beyond the limits of silicon? Join Chalmers and contribute to cutting-edge research on two-dimensional semiconductors, focusing on advanced memory technologies in a world-class research environment. About us The https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/mc2/ advances the frontiers in quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics and future electronic systems - for technical and societal development. Our cross-disciplinary approach gives interesting collaborations in academy, industry and society, and is a driving force for innovations, results and breakthroughs. We offer a vibrant, international research environment and direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities. Under the supervision of Dr. Anton Persson, who recently joined from Stanford University, you will become part of the Division of Microwave Electronics which has doctoral students and senior researchers from both industry and academia working with semiconductor technology development, circuit design, and the realization of complete system demonstrations. About the research project The continuous miniaturization of silicon-based electronics has driven the technological progress for decades. However, as devices now approach atomic scales, the fundamental laws of physics increasingly hinder further advances. To sustain the pace of innovation, both academia and industry have started exploring alternative materials, devices, and circuit architectures, particularly in the rapidly expanding field of artificial intelligence (AI) accelerator hardware. Are you interested in advancing materials for safe and reliable nuclear power using cutting-edge characterization techniques? Join our team at Chalmers to explore corrosion mechanisms in zirconium alloys at the atomic scale and contribute to the development of next-generation nuclear materials. About us The research at the Division of Microstructure Physics focuses on experimental investigations of engineering materials using advanced characterization techniques. Do you want to work with a whole group of researchers who share these interests? If so, this could be a PhD position for you. The overall goal of this PhD project is to enzymatically modify glycans from hemicellulose to produce bio-based crosslinkers for applications in adhesives, hydrogels and other crosslinked materials. However, many materials that we consider bio-based, such as wood fibreboards, hydrogels and stabilizers from non-fossil polymers, still rely on crosslinkers that have fossil origins and are often very harmful chemicals. Fibreboards for furniture, construction and insulation typically contain around 9% glue consisting of urea formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is classified as a known human carcinogen and its emissions from fibreboards are a major concern. Oxidative enzymes will be used on hemicellulose substrates, such as xyloglucan and glucomannan, to obtain aldehyde and ketone functions on the sugar ring in parallel with a partial degradation to oligosaccharides. The expected result is a collection of non-toxic, bio-based crosslinkers that can potentially replace formaldehyde and similar fossil-based crosslinkers. About the position You will be part of a research group conducting research in organic chemistry and biotechnology with a focus on structural analysis of enzymes and carbohydrate substrates using NMR spectroscopy, as well as the development of new methods for studying interactions between proteins and carbohydrates using NMR spectroscopy. The project includes a lot of laboratory work and will be carried out with an advanced level of characterization using NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to be able to draw conclusions about the structural composition of the crosslinkers and the crosslinked materials. To achieve these goals while ensuring a productive and enriching environment, the project includes supervision in organic chemistry, enzymology and wood technology. The position also includes teaching up to 20% of the time. Requirements To meet the general entry requirements you must have: been awarded a second-cycle (Master’s) qualification; satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad (Higher Education Ordinance 1993:100, Chapter 7, Section 39). Specific entry requirements for the third-cycle courses and study programme in chemistry: To meet the specific entry requirements, you must have at least 60 HEC in chemistry-related subjects (general, analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry as well as biochemistry). This must include a degree project and at least 30 HEC must be at second-cycle level. You must also meet the equivalent English language requirements as those necessary for the Swedish upper-secondary qualification Engelska B/6. Your profile We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who has a master's degree in a field relevant to the position, for example in organic chemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology or equivalent. A focus on biochemistry or organic chemistry with experience in laboratory work are valuable merits, as are experience in NMR spectroscopy and/or protein expression and purification. Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities such as collaborative skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently. Good knowledge of English (both spoken and written) is required. About us You will be placed in the subject of organic chemistry at the Department of Molecular Sciences, SLU, Uppsala.
