About the role The position has a central role in education at both bachelor’s and master’s level. You will be responsible for the basic course in Engineering Geology (6 credits), which is mandatory for all first-year civil engineering students (approximately 220 students). In addition, you will contribute to courses in Geotechnics and Infrastructure at third-year, as well as several master’s courses, such as Applied Hydrogeology, Geological and Geotechnical Site Characterization, Contaminated Sites and Remediation, and Risk Assessment and Decision Support. The role includes course planning, development and coordination, as well as supervision of students at bachelor’s and master’s levels. You are expected to take on the role of examiner over time. If not already fulfilled, higher education pedagogical training in accordance with SUHF recommendations should be completed within two years. About the department and the division The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering tackles contemporary and emerging challenges for the built and natural environment, ranging from resource utilisation, pollution and climate change to digitalisation and inequality. We combine expertise in architecture, civil engineering and related disciplines to build a better world.  The Engineering Geology research area at Chalmers is well established, with a professorship since 1949. It is nationally and internationally recognised for high-level research in applied hydrogeology, drinking water supply, underground construction, planning and use of geological resources, remediation of contaminated areas, as well as risk and decision analysis linked to these fields. The research area consists of approximately 15 full-time researchers along with affiliated researchers. Teaching is conducted at both bachelor’s and master’s levels and is closely connected to geotechnical and infrastructure engineering, reflecting both current research and the needs of society and industry. Main responsibilities The main duties involve teaching at the first and second cycle levels. We are now looking for an Instrument Scientist for the HEIMDAL powder diffractometer. The position is with the Diffraction & Imaging Division. About the division The Diffraction & Imaging Division consists of the scientific staff that are leading the instrument construction projects and the staff that will eventually execute the day-to-day operations of six neutron instruments. About the role: The Scientific Support Division at ESS is looking for a Biodeuteration Scientist to support the ESS neutron user program. The Deuteration group at ESS operates a support service providing deuterium-labelled samples for the scientific users of the ESS neutron instruments for carrying out a broad range of experiments primarily in materials and life science research.   In this position, you will play an important role in ensuring the success of biological and biomaterial experiments at ESS by further developing methods for the biological production of a range of deuterated biomolecules, contributing deuterated materials for user proposals and requested by ESS users, and optimising purification and analysis capabilities. In the ESS Deuteration group, we also work in close collaboration with our international colleques at other deuteration laboratories. In this role, you will: Provide deuteration services for neutron experiment users, including the production, purification and characterization of a variety of biologically deuterated molecules. Further develop ESS capabilities for biodeuteration as well as related purification and analysis methods, in order to meet the evolving needs of the ESS scientific user program. Coordinate the planning, organization and operation of ESS biodeuteration support including proposal calls, feasibility reviews and proposal work scheduling. Maintain and operate the biological deuteration facilities of ESS in collaboration with the Lund Protein Production Facility at Lund University hosting our biodeuteration activities. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science.   About the role   Within the Science Directorate, the Scientific Support Division provides the ESS neutron science program with experimental support including sample environments, user laboratories, deuteration, and hall coordination in close collaboration with Instrument Divisions.   The Sample Environment group at ESS is preparing to support all ESS neutron instruments by developing, assembling and integrating a broad range of specialized equipment for achieving both very low and very high temperatures, high magnetic fields, high pressure, vacuum, gas or liquid flow, lasers, and in many cases, automated systems. Once ESS transitions into operations in early 2027, we will provide operational support for all sample environments on the instruments in close collaboration with scientists, as well as continuing the development of new sample environments. We are now seeking a Sample Environment Engineer to support the development, commissioning and the operations of high temperature furnaces, as well as related gas handling and pressurized gas systems. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering sample environment projects in these areas, working in close collaboration with other members of the Sample environment group as well as academic research groups to develop new equipment and provide operational support for early science experiments at ESS. As part of this role, you will specifically develop new sample environments in collaboration with the universities participating in the ESS Early Science Initiative project “Sustainable and functional materials from local resources” funded by the Swedish Research Council. Day-to-day, you will: Specify, design, develop and procure equipment for high temperature/gas handling and pressurized sample environment systems. Work with academic researchers to develop technical specifications and propose solutions and designs to meet scientific requirements. Assemble, integrate and commission sample environments and associated equipment. Install, operate, maintain and repair high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems and related equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams and academic user groups to establish specifications and priorities for new high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems. Provide operational sample environment support for the ESS instruments including on-call support. Provide expert experiment safety reviews for user proposals and carry out safety testing of user-supplied equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams, users, and sample environment groups at other large-scale facilities to further develop high temperature/gas handling/pressurized sample environment equipment and technologies. Participate in the setting-up, maintenance and operation of the sample environment workshops and facilities. This is a full-time, fixed-term position for around 3 years based at ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden. About you   You have up to an MSc level degree in an engineering subject (e.g. mechanical, materials or metallurgical engineering) with relevance to this position, which focuses on the development and practical realization of high temperature and pressurized gas handling systems for scientific measurements. Previous experience of design as well as hands-on work experience with high-temperature equipment and gas handling/pressurised gas systems is required. You also have previous experience of mechanical assembly, maintenance and repairs, as well as relevant knowledge of material behavior at high temperatures and hazards involved in pressurized gas systems.   Experience of developing scientific or technical equipment involving controlling or monitoring temperature, mass, gas pressure or other experimental parameters would be considered particularly beneficial for this role. Experience with additional techniques including vacuum welding, brazing, wiring, light sheet metal work, and tube bending is also regarded as a merit, as are basic machining skills. Knowledge of control systems and programming would be an advantage, but not a requirement. You are accustomed to working with scientists as well as technicians to define and deliver projects and support operating equipment. You take as much pride in designing engineering solutions to meet scientific requirements as providing hands-on practical solutions to equipment problems, and approach all tasks with a collaborative, service-oriented mind-set. You are eager to learn new things, adapt quickly, and interested in contributing across a variety of tasks besides your core area of competence. A genuine interest in designing as well as building, repairing, or improving experimental equipment is vital. Enheten Gruv -och mineralnäringsanalys består av 12 medarbetare. Enheten ansvarar för framställning och tillhandahållande av information som beskriver prospekterings- och gruvnäringen, utför utredningar, samt medverkar i analyser kring lagstiftning och försörjningsanalyser som berör näringarna. Dessutom arbetar vi med internationella utbildningsuppdrag om gruvor och miljö. Arbetsuppgifter I rollen arbetar du ofta med flera uppgifter parallellt, både självständigt och i grupp där du kan ha rollen som ledare eller deltagare. Uppgifterna är olika typer av utredningar, remisser, regeringsuppdrag som inkluderar exempelvis kunskapsinhämtning och analys samt sammanställning och granskning av information som relaterar till gruv- och prospekteringssektorn samt det moderna samhällets behov av metall- och mineralråvaror. Uppgifterna innebär exempelvis att ta fram underlag både genom snabba kunskapssammanställningar i avgränsade frågor och att proaktivt identifiera kunskapsgap där beslutsunderlag saknas samt att delta i det långsiktiga arbetet med insamling och uppbyggnaden av kunskap rörande Sveriges mineralresurser. Därför kan även fältarbete med kartering ingå i tjänsten. Du kommer få agera stöd i sakfrågor inom vår samverkan med andra myndigheter och i internationella samarbeten. I dina arbetsuppgifter kan det ingå att föra dialog med såväl näringsliv som andra myndigheter. Arbetet utförs till stor del tillsammans med kollegor från olika discipliner. Vårt arbete styrs i hög grad av uppdragsgivarnas behov och sker i olika utsträckning tillsammans med dem. I arbetsuppgifterna ingår också att presentera resultaten i rapportform och inför åhörare, vilket ställer höga krav på goda språkkunskaper. Kompetens Vi söker dig som har: En för tjänsten relevant akademisk examen på lägst master- eller magisternivå eller motsvarande kunskaper förvärvade genom arbetslivet, som SGU anser likvärdig och relevant för tjänsten. Samtidigt är du självgående, tar ansvar för dina uppgifter som du strukturerar och driver självständigt. Du är nyfiken och ser utmaningar som en möjlighet till förbättring, samt har en vilja att dela med dig av kunskap och kan tydligt kommunicera resultat på ett lättbegripligt sätt.
