Description of the PhD projects
We are seeking two PhD students in the field of biogas production, with a focus on the digestion process. The biogas process is currently an important tool for achieving multiple societal benefits and environmental goals. Through anaerobic digestion, a wide range of organic waste streams and residues can be treated while simultaneously closing nutrient cycles and producing renewable energy and nutrient-rich biofertilizers. Biogas production also contributes to increased preparedness and self-sufficiency. The biogas process is driven by complex microbial communities that must remain balanced to ensure efficient and stable biogas production. At the Department of Molecular Sciences, research is conducted both on process operation and optimization and on process microbiology, often in close integration.
The PhD projects will focus on the following areas, with some opportunity for the successful candidates to influence the detailed project design.
Biogas production from agricultural feedstocks – Process optimisation. Biogas production in the agricultural sector is currently expanding rapidly, creating a strong need for new knowledge and technological development. As a PhD student in this project, you will operate and evaluate different laboratory-scale biogas processes with the aim of optimising both biogas production and biofertiliser quality. The processes will be studied using chemical and microbiological analyses, and there will also be opportunities to work with process modelling.
Process microbiology. This project focuses on the microbiology of different types of biogas processes and on how microbial activity is affected by different operational conditions, as well as how these changes relate to process function and stability. The work will involve molecular biological methods and bioinformatics to analyse microbial communities in both laboratory-scale and full-scale biogas processes. The aim is to identify microorganisms and microbial markers associated with specific operating conditions and to be used to predict process disturbances.
A Master's degree in biology, microbiology, biotechnology, molecular biotechnology, bioinformatics, or a related field. Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken (equivalent to a passing grade in Swedish upper secondary school English B/English 6).
We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a strong commitment to advancing renewable energy systems and a keen interest in biotechnology and industrial microbiology. Applicants should be able to read and critically evaluate scientific literature in English and communicate effectively in both written and spoken English. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential.
Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas are considered an advantage: Biogas processes, Modelling and/or programming, statistics, Swedish language skills

The positions are connected to the national transdisciplinary centre of excellence, the Biogas Solutions Research Center (BSRC), as well as the Interreg project BEAR for the PhD project 1, carried out in collaboration with Luleå University of Technology and the University of Oulu. BSRC brings together researchers from Linköping University and SLU, together with approximately 50 private and public organizations representing the entire biogas value chain. The PhD positions within BSRC are intended to promote co-production of knowledge between academia, industry, and the public sector, thereby ensuring long-term competence development in both research and industry.
Both projects will be carried out within the Microbial Biotechnology research group, and the principal supervisor for both projects will be Professor Anna Schnürer. The PhD students will also be supervised by additional researchers within the research group, ensuring access to the expertise required for the successful completion of the projects. Since the projects are conducted in close collaboration with industry and other societal stakeholders, the supervisory teams may also include external supervisors from industry.

The position is a full-time doctoral studentship comprising four years of postgraduate education. Salary is determined according to the local collective agreement for doctoral students, with fixed salary progression levels.

Postdoctoral position in Plant Evolutionary Genomics and Pangenomics Department of Plant Biology About the position A postdoctoral position in plant evolutionary genomics is available in the Yant Lab at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala, Sweden. The Yant Lab develops computational and genomic approaches to understand evolution, adaptation, genome dynamics, and whole-genome duplication across diverse plant systems (see https://www.yantlab.net/). The project is funded through a Formas grant aimed at restoring European ash (Fraxinus excelsior) populations threatened by ash dieback. The successful candidate will contribute to developing the first Swedish-focused European ash pangenome, integrating long-read genome assemblies with population-scale sequencing to understand disease resistance and local adaptation across Europe. The project combines large-scale population genomics, graph-based pangenomics, structural variant discovery, genome-wide association studies, and evolutionary genomics using state-of-the-art long-read sequencing and computational genomic approaches. The successful candidate will work closely with collaborators at other SLU campuses, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and other European partners, contributing to both methodological developments and biological discovery. The project offers an opportunity to work at the forefront of plant evolutionary genomics while contributing directly to forest restoration and conservation. Your profile We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a PhD in botany, evolutionary biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, plant biology, or a related subject deemed equivalent by the employer. The applicant should have a strong publication record relative to career stage and demonstrated ability to conduct independent research. The ideal candidate will have experience in all of the following areas: -large scale population genomics, demographic inference, and evolutionary genomics -graph-based pangenomics and structural variant analysis, ideally in plants -genotype-environment association (GEA/EAA) or GWAS -programming in Python, with extensive experience working in Linux and multiple HPC environments. -population genomics across environmental gradients, including demographic inference and genotype–environment association analyses Experience with long-read sequencing, structural variant analysis, graph-based genome analysis, and plant genomics is considered an advantage but is not required. Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua) Climate change is impacting aquatic ecosystems worldwide, creating an urgent need for management strategies that strengthen ecological resilience and support sustainable use of aquatic resources. In this two-year postdoctoral project, you will use quantitative evidence-based syntheses to identify how aquatic management can enhance ecosystem resilience to the impacts of climate change. This position offers opportunities for career development at the interface between ecological research and practical management through scientific publishing, conference participation, and stakeholder engagement. About the position We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong interest in evidence-based conservation and restoration ecology. The project combines fundamental ecological and evolutionary research with applied management science to address: Which management interventions most effectively increase resilience to climate change in aquatic ecosystems? How do dispersal, ecological interactions and evolutionary adaptation influence the success of climate adaptation measures? How can evidence synthesis be translated into practical decision support for environmental managers? You will apply systematic reviews, meta-analyses and other evidence synthesis methods to answer these questions. The work includes close collaboration with practitioners to ensure scientifically robust and practically relevant guidance for climate adaptation. The project is expected to result in scientific publications while directly informing evidence-based environmental policy and management. Department of Crop Production Ecology Biology with a specialisation in ecology - The Department of Crop Production Ecology is seeking a PhD student in plant breeding and plant protection against insect pests. Description: Chemical insecticides have been an important tool for limiting crop losses caused by insect pests and insect-borne viruses, but their availability has declined sharply in recent years. Crop varieties with resistance, tolerance or other traits that enable them to avoid insect damage and viruses spread by insects will therefore be a cornerstone of future integrated pest management. The vision for the new project 'Node for Plant Breeding against Insect Pests and Viruses' within the centre SLU Grogrund is to reduce crop losses caused by pests and insect-borne viruses through crop breeding. The project focuses on insect pests and viruses in wheat, field beans, peas and sugar beet and is a collaboration between five departments at SLU and three plant breeding companies. We are seeking a highly motivated individual for a PhD position within the Node, focusing on the broad bean beetle (Bruchus rufimanus), a key pest of field bean. Infestations by the broad bean beetle pose an obstacle to developing field bean cultivation and a market for field beans for human consumption. The PhD programme comprises both research and coursework. The main tasks within the research component will be: Examine the insect's life cycle in the field and in storage Develop methods for screening of broad bean beetle infestations in a large panel of plant breeding material Contributing to the development of DNA markers for resistance or tolerance to broan bean beetle, for future application in plant breeding You will collaborate on the project with other PhD students and senior researchers in plant breeding, crop production, entomology, virology and genetics, as well as with the industry and other stakeholders, primarily Lantmännen and NordGen. Laboratory and field work is planned to be carried out at both SLU's campuses in Uppsala and Alnarp, as well as at NordGen in Alnarp. Field work at other locations in Sweden may also be included.
