Your role and responsibilities
Are you interested in shaping the next generation of high-quality, scalable and easy configurable softstarters within ABB’s Electrification business area? Would you like to apply your expertise in a challenging and fascinating environment in a global and diverse company?
Then, join our team of highly motivated engineers as a R&D engineer for electronics hardware development, and contribute to the foundations of next-generation ABB products. You will maintain our active product portfolio, contribute creative ideas to product realization initiatives and propose innovative development projects addressing customer specific requirements. We provide an agile, dynamic workplace and you will be part of a cross-functional agile team embedded in a global network of collaborating teams.
We expect that you show a high motivation, hands-on attitude as well as taking initiative to come up with new ideas that tackle today’s challenges.
You design, develop, and implement analog and digital circuits from concept phase to serial production.
Your tasks include creation of schematics and definition of constraints for PCB layout, definition of verification specifications and execution of verification activities of your designs by simulation and prototype testing, as well as documentation and handover of the developed technologies with subsequent implementation support to production engineering.
You collaborate closely with product owner, product management, system architects and software developers to breakdown market requirements to product requirements for hardware.
You monitor technology developments and product technologies to identify technical drivers for R&D projects, supported by your thorough understanding of key business drivers for ABB’s products and solutions.
You participate in internal and external networks to expand your knowledge of your area of expertise.
You take responsibility for hardware development activities, as (senior) member, including risk identification, alignment with targets, and close coordination with suppliers and other functions (e.g. product management).
You contribute to discussions of intellectual property and secure patent rights for ABB by driving the IP creation.
Qualifications for the role
M.Sc. or B.Sc degree in Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems or comparable field
At least 5 years of experience in development of electronics within embedded systems as a hardware design engineer in an industrial context
Sound knowledge in designing electronic circuits, circuit diagrams, and working with simulation tools
Experience in testing and validation of prototypes in a laboratory. Proven experience in working with voltage levels up to ~1kV would be considered a plus
Knowledge in EMC compatible design would be considered a plus
Willingness to travel internationally (<5%)
Fluency in English (written and spoken) is essential; Swedish language skills are beneficial but not a prerequisite.

About the role As a Hardware Engineer at SumUp, you’ll play a key role in the early-stage development of our physical products. Working within the Hardware Tribe, you’ll be responsible for translating product specifications into efficient, scalable electrical designs. In your daily work, you will design, review schematics and debug existing implementations. You will collaborate with mechanical engineers and other stakeholders to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and timely delivery. Your expertise will help accelerate product development and reduce risks in our growing portfolio. The role is based on-site in our office in Berlin.
