ABOUT THE ROLE We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our MAT – Backend (Main Application Team). In this role, you’ll play a key part in designing and evolving the backend systems that power Rossum’s core product, supporting complex document processing workflows and data flows used by customers at scale. This role goes beyond implementation; our engineers knew that technical debt and scalability were problems we needed to solve, and we’re looking for you to help shape those solutions. You’ll work closely with Product, Frontend, and other Backend teams to deliver features that balance immediate needs with long-term maintainability. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will be a critical contributor to our backend efforts, managing day-to-day operations while identifying strategic improvements to keep our systems reliable and easy to build on. WHO YOU ARE We’re looking for a peer who is a "bullshit-free" problem solver and isn't afraid to challenge assumptions. You should bring: * Strong professional experience in backend engineering within a production environment. * Advanced knowledge of Python (or a similar backend language) and a solid understanding of relational databases. * A balance of hands-on execution and strategic thinking, specifically in designing REST APIs and operating backend services. * Experience with AI coding tools and a proven track record of owning features through their full lifecycle. * A proactive and empathetic approach to communication and cross-functional collaboration. Bonus points for: * Experience with distributed systems, messaging, and cloud-based architectures. * Familiarity with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, or infrastructure tooling. * A passion for mentoring junior engineers or acting as a technical point of contact. WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE * Within 3 Months: You’ll build a strong understanding of our backend architecture and start delivering changes independently as a reliable contributor to the team. You'll gain a deep understanding of our synergy with Coupa Software and our shared roadmap. * Within 6 Months: You’ll own larger features end-to-end and begin improving existing systems through refactoring or performance tuning. * Within 12 Months: You'll act as a go-to engineer for specific backend areas, helping shape technical direction and raising the engineering bar across the MAT team.
