We are seeking a talented Turbopump Principal Engineer to join our Future Project division. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for leading the development of the turbomachinery of our high thrust engine. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Managing and mentoring a team of engineers with diverse expertise, background and seniority (set objectives, perform reviews, support team members in their development...) * Ensuring the proper development of complex systems which are the turbomachinery of a high thrust liquid rocket engine (management of planning and resources, organization of reviews...) * Lead technical decisions for the development of the turbopumps and its surrounding infrastructures (test stands, manufacturing capabilities...) always having in mind the potential impacts on the engine. * In collaboration with the Business Team, participate in the preparation of proposals writing * Oversee tests to validate the performance and reliability of turbopump components * Identify, evaluate, and collaborate with suppliers to ensure the quality, cost-effectiveness, and timely delivery of turbopump components * Anticipating risks for the turbopumps development and proposing corresponding mitigation actions WHAT WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE FROM YOU * Master's Degree or higher (or NZ and AUS "Bachelor with honors") in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related and applicable technical discipline with a minimum of 8 years of related experience * Proven experience leading projects from the early design phases of space projects, through development test campaigns until hardware qualification * Strong understanding of liquid-propellant rocket and engines as systems * Strong fundamentals in thermodynamics and mechanical design * Some understanding of problems of machine dynamics, such as rotordynamics * Good understanding of industry standard and emerging manufacturing methods and their respective constraints * Proven experience in external suppliers handling * Fluent in English. Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run. We are seeking a Storm Deputy Chief Engineer to lead the design, integration, and test of the engine system and turbomachinery for our next-gen high-thrust cryogenic rocket engine (LOX/LCH4). He/she will report to the Storm Chief Engineer and act as their technical deputy, owning engine-level system design and the turbomachinery domain (turbopumps, rotordynamics, bearings and seals, and their integration with the preburner/gas generator) end to end, from architecture through hot-fire testing. This role is responsible for the technical soundness of the engine system and turbomachinery subsystems, translating the Chief Engineer's overall architecture and vision into detailed design, integration, and validated hardware — while standing in for the Chief Engineer on day-to-day technical arbitration when needed. The Deputy Chief Engineer owns the technical integrity, performance, and safety of the engine system and turbomachinery throughout their lifecycle — from architecture definition to prototype testing — and works closely with the Storm Chief Engineer and High Thrust Engine Lead to keep engineering excellence and delivery efficiency in balance. REPORTING LINE Reports to: Storm Chief Engineer KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Engine System Design: Own the detailed design and integration of the engine system, including cycle definition, propellant supply, ignition, and interfaces between turbomachinery, combustion devices, and structures. Ensure design coherence with the overall Storm architecture set by the Chief Engineer. * Turbomachinery Ownership: Serve as the primary technical owner of turbopump design — rotordynamics, bearings, seals, hydraulic and thermal design, and manufacturability — and of its integration with the preburner/gas generator. Lead technical reviews and arbitrate turbomachinery-specific trade-offs. * Test & Validation: Lead engine system and turbomachinery test campaigns, from component-level rig testing through engine hot-fire. Own test planning, instrumentation strategy, data review, and anomaly resolution. * Mentorship and Technical Oversight: Provide guidance and mentorship to the engine systems and turbomachinery teams, fostering a culture of technical rigor, innovation, and accountability. * Risk Management & Safety: Identify, assess, and manage technical risks within the engine system and turbomachinery domains. Support critical design and readiness reviews led by the Chief Engineer, and prepare non-conformance/design deviation packages for approval. * Collaboration: Deputize for the Storm Chief Engineer on technical matters as required, including partner and supplier interactions on turbomachinery and engine systems. Coordinate closely with program management and other engineering domains to balance performance, cost, and schedule. * Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement in engine system and turbomachinery design tools, test methods, and team capability. Ensure lessons learned from testing are captured and fed back into design. WHAT WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE FROM YOU: * A minimum of a master's degree in propulsion engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field. * Over 10 years of experience in liquid rocket engine development, with significant depth in engine system design and/or turbomachinery. * Deep understanding of cryogenic propulsion systems, including turbopump design, rotordynamics, and hot-gas systems. * Proven track record of taking turbomachinery or engine systems from concept through detailed design and test. * Hands-on experience in engine or turbopump hot-fire/rig testing and anomaly resolution. * Ability to lead multi-disciplinary technical teams and arbitrate design trades within the engine system domain. * Experience managing subsystem-level requirements, interfaces, and verification activities. * Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound technical decisions under uncertainty, schedule, and cost pressure. * Ability to work with geographically distributed teams and coordinate with external partners or suppliers. * Fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication. * Positive, adaptable, and collaborative mindset. As a talented Turbopump AIT Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the development of our turbopumps for the Storm and Typhoon engines. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / TASKS: In your capacity as a Turbopump AIT Engineer, your role will be continuously evolving, but day to day your duties will include: * Define and implement subcomponent test strategies to ensure the appropriate level of technical maturity and readiness prior to turbopump and engine-level testing. * Design, develop, and validate test assemblies and dedicated tooling required to execute subcomponent and component-level tests effectively and safely. * Prepare and execute assembly procedures for turbopump test articles and flight hardware, including inspection plans, propellant compatibility verification, cleanliness, FOD control requirements and design of specific means. * Lead high-precision mechanical assembly of turbopump hardware, including bearings, rotors, stators, and seals, with controlled torque application and full traceability. * Manage fluid interfaces and instrumentation on test articles (propellants, cooling, purge, lubrication), and provide technical inputs to support integration at turbopump and engine levels. * Support test preparation and execution activities in close collaboration with test bench teams, ensuring smooth operations both at internal and external test facilities. * Act as a technical interface with design engineering teams, providing feedback to optimize designs for manufacturability, assembly, integration, and testability (MAIT). * Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams and external partners, including development engineers, AIT engineers and technicians, suppliers, and test facility operators, throughout the full test campaign lifecycle. WHAT WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE FROM YOU: * Bachelor's, master's or PhD in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field (master's and above preferred). * 2+ years of experience in turbopump design, testing, or closely related fields (Engineer II) * Hands-on experience with pump or rotating machinery testing (or equivalent experimental work) * Exposure to dynamic seals and high-duty bearings is a strong plus * Exposure to manufacturing processes (e.g. machining, welding, additive manufacturing, surface treatments, inspections) and their impact on tolerances and performance is highly valued * Solid understanding of cryogenics, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics * Familiarity with rocket propulsion and thermophysical property tools (e.g. CEA, CoolProp, RefProp) * Experience or interest in statistical analysis and data-driven methods (e.g. surrogate models, Bayesian approaches) is a plus * Solution-oriented mindset, with the creativity and curiosity to tackle complex technical challenges * Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams Why you should join us!
